Mary of Needle 'N Thread shares pictures of this stunning hand embroidered wedding gown from 1914 that belonged to a friend's great-grandmother.

Made from a gorgeous silk Crepe de Chine, the dress and "court train" are completely hand embroidered in silk perle with a pattern of chrysanthemums, ribbons, and shamrocks. The shoulders and sleeves of the dress are made of embroidered tulle, and the waste is accented with a rhinestone and bead bow.

The detail is simply amazing, and the condition of the embroidery is highly impressive. One of my favorite details is this cluster of French knots in the middle of a perfectly satin stitched flower. They are breathtaking, and look as though they could have been stitched just yesterday. The dress is a true treasure.

Yarn & Quilled Paper Place Card
By Ann Martin

Here's a place card design that's quick and easy enough to make a large quantity in a short amount of time, assembly-line style. They would look pretty at a bridal shower luncheon or could even grace your Thanksgiving table.

The flowers were made with colorful 2-ply yarn I'd been saving in my sewing box for ages, leftover from a crewelwork pillow kit. I love it when I finally find a use for extra bits that were just too nice to throw away.

A few strips of quilling paper were rolled and folded to make the flower centers and leaves. If you don't have quilling paper, you can easily cut your own strips with a paper trimmer. Just use any paper that's similar in weight to standard computer paper. If you need to join two strips to make a longer one, tear the strip ends before applying a small amount of glue to each, overlapping the ends slightly. The torn edges will blend better than straight cuts and the join spot will barely be noticeable.

Katie D, our wonderful friend and sales rep here at Craftzine, is getting married really, really soon (in less than 10 days!) to an equally wonderful guy. We asked her to bring in samples of the handkerchiefs she's embroidering for the bridal party, and we thought we'd give you, our lovely readers, a sneak peek. Katie's an avid equestrian, so she's embroidering a lucky horseshoe and the recipient's initials onto one corner of almost a dozen hankies. Such a sweet gift!

Sam's Custom Wedding Ring

<itunes:summary> MAKE magazine photo editor Sam Murphy is tying the knot this September (congrats Sam!) and she had her wedding ring custom-made based on her mother's vintage 1901 ring. She worked with the talented Amanda Knox of RedStart Design, designers</itunes:summary>

MAKE magazine photo editor Sam Murphy is tying the knot this September (congrats Sam!) and she had her wedding ring custom-made based on her mother's vintage 1901 ring. She worked with the talented Amanda Knox of RedStart Design, designers of fine custom jewelry. The process and the end result are fascinating. Here is Sam's mom's original ring:

Sam wanted a slightly different variation retaining the classic etching but using red sapphires instead of diamonds. Amanda first made a sketch and then a CAD drawing:

The finished ring was then sent to fifth-generation Armenian metalsmith and engraver Hratch Nargizian, who hand-engraved the designs onto the ring. Here's another look at the gorgeous final handmade creation:

That special day can turn into quite a pricey event. When it comes to creating a memento to share with your wedding guests, do yourself a favor and use recycled materials. With a few additions from the hardware store and a color printer you can create this easy, personalized, wine cork keychain. This project is a great way to save some green by making it green.

Tip: A great place to collect wine corks is at your favorite bar or restaurant. When you tell them they'll be put to good reuse, most will be happy to contribute to the cork collection.

My husband and I had a true DIY wedding in a log cabin, so naturally we wanted all of the decorations and props to reflect the rustic setting. I came up with the idea of a "nest" ring bearer pillow and matching flower girl basket. I was able to find all of the supplies at the local craft shop and assembling these pieces were so simple. You can easily edit the theme by adding butterflies or flowers instead.

<itunes:summary> When I got married, way back in the last century, big puffy sleeves complemented with bold colors and super shiny fabrics still ruled the world of weddings. Wedding gowns were over the top, bridesmaid dresses were the stuff nightmares</itunes:summary>

When I got married, way back in the last century, big puffy sleeves complemented with bold colors and super shiny fabrics still ruled the world of weddings. Wedding gowns were over the top, bridesmaid dresses were the stuff nightmares are made of, and cake toppers were often sickly sentimental or big, gaudy affairs.

I got married in a redwood grove, in flat shoes, and surrounded by a carpet of rose petals I gathered and dried myself. For the cake I wanted simple -- a few flowers, a few tiers, and we were happy. But the cake topper became a bit of a problem. We didn't like the big ones, and the traditional ones seemed out of place in the forest.

Finally, I decided to go with humor -- I found a couple of bride and groom troll dolls with hair colors that matched ours. Trolls are native to the forest, I thought to myself. And to really make them ours, I cut some of the hair off the groom and carefully glued it to the face of the groom troll. My husband-to-be had a beard, and so did the cake topper groom.

The caterer joined in on the theme, and created some amazing sculptures out of vegetables -- swans out of whole melons, groomsmen and the bride out of crookneck squash, and an assortment of flowers out of red cabbage, radishes, jicama, and green onions. I always thought they'd be fun to try to re-create as a DIY project.

Pantyhose Petals
Create delicate nylon flowers to dress up a wedding gown, veil, or centerpiece.
By Mary Beth Klatt

In the 1950s, women had to wear hosiery to the office or risk being fired. Naturally, these ladies ended up with a lot of ripped and snagged pantyhose. Although some tossed these ruined pairs, the crafty ones cooked up beautiful ways to reuse them. Many women ended up dyeing and cutting them up to create flowers for wedding veils, corsages, and hats.

Now those same flowers will set you back a small fortune on eBay, but you can re-create them for a fraction of the price, and get a vintage look that would be appropriate on Elizabeth Taylor in Father of the Bride.

Paper Flower Centerpiece

Paper Flower Centerpiece
By Cathy Callahan

A centerpiece made with fresh flowers adds a nice touch to the tables for the guests at your wedding reception, but unfortunately fresh flowers can cost a small fortune. You love the idea of fresh flowers, but the thought of doing them on the big day (along with getting hitched) may be out of the question. If you're crafty (or have friends who are), there are lots of alternatives to fresh flowers that can be even more special because they're made by hand!

Paper is a great choice for making flowers. The good news about paper flowers is that they can cost next to nothing to make. If you break down the costs of what I made as pictured, it's probably no more than $2. These can be a little time-consuming to make, but would be great to do well enough in advance. I think it would be super fun to have a centerpiece-making party. Have some friends and family over and serve some snacks!

I just love working with crepe paper but it can be hard to find and sometimes a little pricey if you have to make a lot of flowers. For this project I used crepe paper streamers, which are available at most party stores and cost less than $1 per roll!
