Recycled Wine Cork Keychain Favors

Recycled Wine Cork Keychain Favors
By Tiffany Threadgould

That special day can turn into quite a pricey event. When it comes to creating a memento to share with your wedding guests, do yourself a favor and use recycled materials. With a few additions from the hardware store and a color printer you can create this easy, personalized, wine cork keychain. This project is a great way to save some green by making it green.
Tip: A great place to collect wine corks is at your favorite bar or restaurant. When you tell them they'll be put to good reuse, most will be happy to contribute to the cork collection.

Bird's Nest Ring Bearer Pillow & Flower Girl Basket

Bird's Nest Ring Bearer Pillow & Flower Girl Basket
By Andrea DeHart

My husband and I had a true DIY wedding in a log cabin, so naturally we wanted all of the decorations and props to reflect the rustic setting. I came up with the idea of a "nest" ring bearer pillow and matching flower girl basket. I was able to find all of the supplies at the local craft shop and assembling these pieces were so simple. You can easily edit the theme by adding butterflies or flowers instead.

Cake Topper Mod

![]() | ![]() |
I got married in a redwood grove, in flat shoes, and surrounded by a carpet of rose petals I gathered and dried myself. For the cake I wanted simple -- a few flowers, a few tiers, and we were happy. But the cake topper became a bit of a problem. We didn't like the big ones, and the traditional ones seemed out of place in the forest.
Finally, I decided to go with humor -- I found a couple of bride and groom troll dolls with hair colors that matched ours. Trolls are native to the forest, I thought to myself. And to really make them ours, I cut some of the hair off the groom and carefully glued it to the face of the groom troll. My husband-to-be had a beard, and so did the cake topper groom.

How-To: Pantyhose Petals
Pantyhose Petals
Create delicate nylon flowers to dress up a wedding gown, veil, or centerpiece.
By Mary Beth Klatt
In the 1950s, women had to wear hosiery to the office or risk being fired. Naturally, these ladies ended up with a lot of ripped and snagged pantyhose. Although some tossed these ruined pairs, the crafty ones cooked up beautiful ways to reuse them. Many women ended up dyeing and cutting them up to create flowers for wedding veils, corsages, and hats.
Now those same flowers will set you back a small fortune on eBay, but you can re-create them for a fraction of the price, and get a vintage look that would be appropriate on Elizabeth Taylor in Father of the Bride.

DIY Monogram Stationery

Sarah Hodsdon re-gifted me a Cricut at Maker Faire last month and I'm excited to test it out sometime soon. Mrs. Penguin on Weddingbee has a great tutorial on how to create your own monogram stationery using the Cricut Expression -- a great way to DIY your own Save the Dates, invitations, thank you cards, and more. She's also got a video of the process along with her step-by-step tutorial.

Coming up next week with our DIY Wedding month, you'll learn how to create your own wedding logo!
Update: Since posting this I came across a review of the Cricut by Patricia of A Little Hut. Read Part 1 and Part 2 here.

Paper Flower Centerpiece

Paper Flower Centerpiece
By Cathy Callahan

A centerpiece made with fresh flowers adds a nice touch to the tables for the guests at your wedding reception, but unfortunately fresh flowers can cost a small fortune. You love the idea of fresh flowers, but the thought of doing them on the big day (along with getting hitched) may be out of the question. If you're crafty (or have friends who are), there are lots of alternatives to fresh flowers that can be even more special because they're made by hand!
Paper is a great choice for making flowers. The good news about paper flowers is that they can cost next to nothing to make. If you break down the costs of what I made as pictured, it's probably no more than $2. These can be a little time-consuming to make, but would be great to do well enough in advance. I think it would be super fun to have a centerpiece-making party. Have some friends and family over and serve some snacks!
I just love working with crepe paper but it can be hard to find and sometimes a little pricey if you have to make a lot of flowers. For this project I used crepe paper streamers, which are available at most party stores and cost less than $1 per roll!

How-To: T-Shirt Wedding Dress
T-Shirt Wedding Dress
By Donna Kroiz and Lauren Kroiz
Until the late 19th century, brides generally bought the fanciest dress they could afford and then wore it throughout their marriage as an evening gown. With the rise of mass-produced clothing, white became the popular color — maximally impractical, it signified the owner would wear the dress only once. Efficient women often married in white and then dyed their dresses to wear again.
In the 21st century, there's no need to choose between anti-consumerist values and looking cute in white on your wedding day. Learn how to make an adorable, versatile dress using white cotton T-shirts — comfortable, repurposed, and perfect for years of reuse.
Materials:
White T-shirts several, depending
on pattern and size
Thread
Sewing machine
Fabric scissors
Pins straight and/or safety
Dress pattern choose any you like
Notions, zipper, buttons, etc.
as called for by your pattern
Sewing machine knit needle (optional)

Dolin and Matthew's DIY Wedding

Dolin and Matthew's DIY Wedding
By Dolin O'Shea

Never being ones to follow trends or wanting something "traditional" for our wedding, we did just about everything for our DIY wedding last summer, with of course, a lot of help from our friends and family. Here is a bit about our vintage inspired wedding.
My husband is a teacher, so we decided to have our ceremony in a historic 19th century one room school house, that is located in San Jose CA. There were only 36 desks, so that limited who could attend the ceremony. We wanted a very small intimate gathering after the ceremony, so the 30 guests that attended were treated to a fantastic dinner party in my sister-in-laws back yard. It was a perfect day and evening. The next day was the big party at our house, we had about 80 guests over to our house to celebrate our wedding with a summer fiesta.
Being a pattern maker and all around crafty girl, I knew I wanted to make my own wedding dress and I wanted to make it right. A few months before the wedding I took a week long couture sewing class, my project for the class was of course my 1950's inspired turquoise wedding dress. Every stitch of this dress was sewn by hand, there were a few seams that I did go back over with a my 1950's Singer sewing machine, but I wanted to stay true to the meaning of haute couture and do almost everything by hand.

How-To: Wedding Flowers for the Bridal Party

Nothing is more romantic or classic than a perfect red rose. Its beauty is undeniable and it is a timeless symbol of love and devotion. While many bridal floral designs are complicated, textural, and packed with flowers, sticking to one type of flower and one deep color is a simple way to ensure a good design, and to also ensure a successful do it yourself project. I purposefully omitted ribbons, bows, and sparkles to allow the perfection of each flower to shine, and to make the construction of each piece less daunting for the novice.
This project showcases a hand-tied rose bouquet for the bride overflowing with more than two dozen flowers, an elegant single blossom corsage, and a handsome boutonniere. If you choose, you can scale down the bride's project to make bouquets for each bridesmaid, or embellish each project with your own signature wedding style.

Rachel and Niles: Bug Themed Garden Wedding

CRAFT reader Rachel Donegan tells us about her beautiful bug themed garden DIY wedding:
My husband and I were married at a historic site with beautiful gardens in Newbury, NH and we had our hands (literally) in pretty much every part of the wedding. I picked out the flowers at the farmer's market day of and we made the bouttoniers from woodland plants that morning. The centerpieces were mini woodland landscapes from plants in the woods at my mother's house. My mom made my dress from a hemp/silk fabric.
What we couldn't make ourselves (like candles), we bought local. Every decision was made with sustainability and ecological responsibility in mind. The whole event cost about $12,000, which I think is about half the average cost of a wedding. And I'd like to think it was a lot more personal than the average wedding. Each table was labeled with a friendly garden insect and to find their seats, guests picked up a slip of paper with their name and a stamped image of their table's insect. Each slip was inside a tiny vellum envelope which were all attached to a fabric covered board.

More of Rachel and Niles' wedding photos after the jump.

Green Wedding Tips

The folks over at Smart2BeGreen have put together a list of handy tips for making your wedding greener without sacrificing your style or dreams. Everything from using digital cameras to taking a green honeymoon and using organic fruit instead of cut flowers for the centerpieces.
They've graciously let us reprint their quick tips, so here ya go:
- Let blooms thrive in their natural habitat. Instead of cut flower bouquets, create centerpieces of colorful organic fruit or beeswax candles.
- Stick with digital photography only-no film. Upload your photographer's shots to an online album. Then, give your parents picture frames made from recycled or reclaimed wood.
- Choose a green honeymoon. Pick a vacation destination close to home, offset your carbon emissions from transport, stay in a LEED-certified hotel or locate a sustainable resort.
- Save paper. Ask your guests to RSVP on your wedding website! You'll save hundreds on first-class postage by being a first-class enviro-citizen.
Smart2BeGreen also includes a list of resources for finding eco-friendly products and where to donate your wedding gown for charity if you're so inclined. Check it out online or subscribe to their e-newsletter, which is packed with simple tips for greener living.
