Non*Mart Trade-Based Shop
A new design studio and shop is opening in San Francisco and they are looking for product submissions. Non*Mart, as the shop is aptly named, touts an interesting alternative to traditional commerce by promoting the barter system. Artists are invited to submit pieces for inclusion in the shop. From the site, "To be considered, your piece must be made (in part or whole) of post-consumer waste and/or address ideas of consumerism, waste, and the ramifications of our consumer culture." Upcoming events at the shop include the opening reception on November 6th and a special event on November 27th to commemorate the annual Buy Nothing Day. Great idea!

Recycled Materials Stitching For Kids
I love this ingenious project for stitching with your kids from This Little Project. Using recycled materials from an "invention junk box" kids are able to practice the motions of stitching and creating their own projects. Brilliant!

Bib from a T-Shirt
I love this T-shirt bib tutorial over at A Ervilha Cor de Rosa. As she says, "making a bib from an old T-shirt is probably not a new idea, but it is a good one none the less. And so easy!" (Thanks Google Translate!) She has great step-by-step photos, too!

How-To: Dog Coat from a Recycled Jacket

When chilly winds start to blow, your best friend can battle the elements in cozy style with a dog coat made from a recycled jacket. For the raw materials, you can tap into the never-ending supply of jackets in thrift shops and yard sales, where I often find the racks chock full of color and fabric choices. Or consider Plan B: make the dog coat from a favorite in your closet that's outgrown or showing its wear. You'll keep it all in the family with one more hand-me-down recipient, the dog.
This project is a how-to for transforming an old jacket into a new dog coat. Once you've assembled the materials, you'll find it goes quickly. A dog coat is basically a flat piece of fabric that needs edge finishing and a means to stay put on the dog. Here are the main steps:
1. Select a dog coat pattern.
2. Lay it out on the recycled jacket.
3. Cut it.
4. Finish the edges.
5. Sew on the velcro fastening.

Birdhouses from Recycled Roof Tiles

A group of Japanese artists are recycling roof tiles and making them into birdhouses. I like the look, and otherwise these tiles would be going to waste. Via BBG.

Tyvek Lunch Bag

Tyvek is a strong, tear and water resistant material used for FedEx mailers and housewrap. I took apart a brown paper lunch bag and sketched out the shape on a flattened Tyvek mailer, then used my sewing machine to attach the seams (glue would work, too). The resulting lunch bag won't last forever, but maybe it will last until you get your next scrap piece of Tyvek.

How-To: Make Recycled Candles
Learn how to make recycled candles from Cara at Failed Feminist.
Cara writes:
Candlemaking has been quite the learning process, especially with my somewhat unorthodox method. Basically, one day Mike and I were driving either to or from Wisconsin and I got this idea that maybe I could melt down old candles that no one wanted anymore and make new ones out of the wax. And what I really wanted to do was put the candles into found objects I collected while thrifting. I looked on etsy and found that others were pouring their wax into teacups and jelly jars, but no one was really using recycled wax.

How-To: Bug Catcher Necklace
My daughter is a bit of a nature nut, and loves to spend loads of time in the backyard finding various bugs and critters to study. She has a bug box that's about the size of a shoebox, but she often wants to take it with us when we're out running errands. I'm not too keen on carrying the whole thing with us, but this bug catcher necklace from Whimsy Love would be a perfect way to appease her. Made with those little prize machine plastic containers that seem to pile up even though we avoid prize machines, it's a perfect way to encourage exploration of nature and reuse of common materials.

Wooden Salad Plate Makeover
I'm a big fan of simple projects with stunning results. Here's a nice example of such a project from Oh So Crafty. She took a old, scratched wooden salad plate, flipped it over to its "good" side, and applied leaves cut from contact paper to act as a resist. She then sprayed the wooden plate with spray paint and removed the contact paper, creating this new lovely piece of art for her bedroom wall. Brilliant!

Re-Construct DVD: Eco-Friendly Crafts Made Easy
Garth Johnson and Jeanée Ledoux have paired up to bring you an instructional DVD of eco-friendly craft projects called Re-Construct . The DVD format is really fresh, and watching Garth and Jeanée is captivating and quite relaxing at the same time. They are both talented artists whose unique personalities come through, complement one another, and keep things interesting. Their tone and format is so natural and casual it feels like they're hanging out in your living room teaching you how to make cool green crafts.
The DVD features 11 different projects made with second-hand materials, some built from scratch and others modding existing things you may have. The projects include High-Heel Hooks, a Cardboard Ottoman, the Starry Blender, Eggshell Planter, and Stenciled Pillow, to name a few. My favorite project, which I can't wait to make, is the Book Shelf, a floating shelf with hidden hardware fashioned from a vintage book (designed by Ezra Waltermaurer of Little Fish Furniture).
Garth and Jeanée make all the steps very clear and easy, while keeping it fun and quirky, all accented by the smooth, organ-infused lounge music in the background. And you can use the techniques they teach as inspiration and direction for other projects you dream up.
