View Master Quilt Block
This is great! Kim from My Go-Go Life provides a tutorial on how to make a View Master-inspired quilt block. I really like the block with binding to stand on its own for a wonderful mini quilt.

Graphic Novel-Inspired Quilt, "Bad Rain"
Textile artist Ferret (Harrow, UK) made this impressive quilt, "Bad Rain," inspired by an illustrated spread in the graphic novel Cancertown. She then brought the quilt to a comic show, and scored a photo with the graphic novel's artist, Stephen Downey, and the author, Cy Dethan (below).
Unfortunately the 629 pixel width of this blog doesn't do justice to all the great detail in the quilt. View the larger quilt image on Ferret's website, along with the original illustrated spread.

Quilting Inspiration on National Quilting Day
Sure, many of us are celebrating St. Patrick's Day today, but there's another holiday that may excite crafters even more this weekend. National Quilting Day is on the third Saturday in March, which means if you enjoy any kind of quilting, today is a day for you. Here's some information from the Holiday Insights web site:
National Quilting Day celebrates fabulous quilts and those who make them. Definitely a ladies hobby, quilting is a skill that produces warm and beautiful results.Today is a day to recognize and appreciate the quiltmakers, the skill and the warm and the results. If you are a quiltmaker, spend a minute to recognize and appreciate that you have truely been blessed with a special skill. If you are not a quiltmaker, wrap yourself into a quilt and enjoy the warmth.
To help you celebrate, we've gathered some of our favorite quilting projects in this National Quilting Day roundup. Enjoy!

Kate Findlay's Large Hadron Collider Quilts
I guess I've let my science/crafty geek flag fly highly and proudly enough over the last several years, because I've had no fewer than five friends send me links to these amazing Large Hadron Collider Quilts in the last several days. I first saw them over on Boing Boing last week, and fell madly in love. Fiber artist Kate Findlay creates the quilts, and I'm charmed by the idea that she has "been living and dreaming and sleeping and eating hadron colliders." Reading about her process makes me appreciate her work even more.
Findlay used traditional patchwork for her three earliest pieces, "Breakthrough," "Inner Eye," and "Does the Dark Matter?" Because of the way fabric moves, this technique makes creating circles a fiendish feat. After six to eight weeks of sewing, and down to the final piece, she says, "My heart was absolutely in my mouth." Until she finished, she had no idea whether everything would line up and lie flat. Her other quilts are done with appliqué, a collage-like style of attaching pieces. Most are about 60 by 60 centimeters and take 10-14 days to complete, though she has made a few larger, 130-by-130-centimeter quilts as well. Findlay uses unconventional fabrics, lots of metallic, shiny bits or sheers, along with beads, sequins, cardboard, and even barbecue skewers, which she inserts along the back to add rigidity. "I started using everything and anything to achieve the effect I wanted," she says. "Sometimes you realize you've just found the perfect medium. I feel I can get the effects I want with fabric."

How-To: T-Shirt Blanket
I can identify with Stacie of Stars for Streetlights t-shirt hoarding problem. My own t-shirt collection was the inspiration for my t-shirt scarf a few years ago. Her mom made an epic blanket out of much of Stacie's t-shirt collection, and now Stacie breaks down how to make one for yourself. I love that she also went to Space Camp, but - unlike me - was brave enough to include her Space Camp t-shirt in the mix. Get the full tutorial over on Stars for Streelights.

How-To: Log Cabin Block Tote Bags
Susan Beal of West Coast Crafty shares a quick and easy tutorial for making log cabin block tote bags.
I made these two tote bags in about an hour and a half, counting all the quilt block piecing! If you use stash blocks or just cut solid pieces of fabric, you can fly through these.
The totes she's making are going to the The Littlest Warriors project at Craft Hope. Read more over on West Coast Crafty.

Inaugural QuiltCon Scheduled for February 2013
I was excited to hear that the first ever QuiltCon, organized by the Modern Quilt Guild, will take place in my old stomping grounds of Austin, Texas. The event touts awesome speakers and teachers, like Denyse Schmidt, Anna Maria Horner, Elizabeth Hartman and more, and will include a juried quilt show and special quilt exhibits. Read more about the event and keep up with news on important dates and participation information through the QuiltCon web site.
