Denyse Schmidt Improvisational Quilt Class This Saturday
Beloved quilt designer, Denyse Schmidt, will be teaching her improvisational quilting class this Saturday at Providence, Rhode Island's Craftland School of Craft.
She'll explain her intuitive design techniques, as well as the skills needed for a strong foundation to bring your own quilt projects to life. Students will create exciting work that will challenge the way you think about color, patchwork and your own creativity. If you're a beginning crafter looking for the skills to tackle some of the projects in Schmidt's books, or an experienced quilter who wants an opportunity to work with one of the most important quilters in the field today, this is the class for you.
If you're lucky enough to be in the area, be sure to nab a spot in this special day-long workshop!

Tokyo International Quilt Festival 2010
Alexandra at Moonstitches has put up an absolutely gorgeous set of photos on Flickr of the Tokyo International Quilt Festival. I look forward to her photos every year--the textiles, designs and technique are all mind-blowing! There are some incredible detail shots as well as photos of each quilt's composition. (More photos after the jump, but I highly recommend taking a look at the whole set, whether or not you're a quilter. They're that beautiful.)

Spool Quilt Tutorial
Having finished my first quilt a few months ago, I've been wanting to tackle another project and have been looking for the right design. I love this abstracted spool quilt from Freda's Hive; even better, there's a tutorial showing how to put it together! This would actually be lovely as a small wall-hanging in a craft room. Motorized Quilt
This jumpy little LilyPad Arduino project called the Kinetic Quilt uses a servo motor to move around. For what purpose, Im not quite sure, but it sure made me react! [via MAKE]

Light-up Squid Quilt

Cheryl Sleboda wrote in with her awesome project:
I just wanted to drop a line to say thanks for the tutorials and info on Craft about LEDs and soft circuitry. I got a Make Conductive Booster Pack and used some blue LEDs to add to a mini quilt I made depicting a "cute" taningia danae squid! The real squid has bioluminescent properties, so it was a perfect subject on which to try out my soft circuit kit.
Cheryl is attempting a "technique a week" for 2010, which I think is just great. What's your first finished project of 2010? Share with us in the comments.

Four Generations Quilt
Rachel of Small Notebook created this beautiful quilt for her son from four generations of family clothing.
His Great-Grandpa's Sunday ties. His Papaw's plaid shirts. His Daddy's khaki pants. And his own newborn onesies, just now barely outgrown.
I love the idea of incorporating family member's clothes into quilts. Such a treasure!

Hawaiian Baby Quilt
I have finally finished the Hawaiian baby quilt I've been working on. It's been my back-burner project for, oh, almost four years! The baby it's intended for is now almost three and not really a baby anymore, but hopefully he'll like it anyway.
While it has certainly been a lot of work (the central portion is all hand-quilted), it's the most satisfying project I've ever worked on. The thread color isn't consistent, the applique is crooked, and I have a lot to learn about mitered corners, but I'm ready to start another, this time for my own baby. Hopefully it will be done by the time he goes to college.

Here's a closer look at the stitching on the back side.

And here it is in all its glory.

If you want to make your own (and I highly recommend it--quilting is very meditative and also a great way to pass the time when you're on the phone or chatting it up with someone), check out our Hawaiian Quilt Project from the pages of CRAFT, Volume 02.

The Detailed Beauty in a Crazy Quilt
My mother-in-law has a stunning antique Crazy Quilt that hangs on the wall in her home. I was visiting there today, and I caught my self inching closer and closer to the quilt, in an attempt to discover all of it's amazing details.
The tiny flower embroidery is so charming.
The discord is the one common thread. The shapes of each patch are just odd. And the colors, prints and textures match by not matching at all. When I look at these patches, I like to think about the special occasion dresses that gave up their velvets and taffetas, and all the well-loved items that went into this quilt.
The only identifying mark, and the only actual literally story reads: Fargo District Epworth League Convention- Ellendale June 30, July 1

Solar System-Inspired Quilts from Jimmy McBride
This collection of solar system-inspired from artist Jimmy McBride have left me breathless. What really has me excited, though, is his post about his next project. I'll give you a hint: Pillars of Creation. Check out the diagram and fabric selection he's put together. Amazing. [via Apartment Therapy Boston]
