Open MAKE This Weekend: Needle Felting With Moxie, Henna With Darcy Vasudev
This weekend's Open MAKE at the Exploratorium offers a day full of fun hands on activities and inspirational talks from makers of all sorts. Our good pal and needle felting guru, Moxie, will be hosting drop-in needle felting demos in the Tinkering Studio Thursday and Friday ahead of the main Open MAKE event on Saturday. Saturday's events include Moxie's workshops and henna art from Darcy Vasudev.
In the Tinkering Studio, we will make needle-felted creatures with Moxie, create three-dimensional shapes by sewing sheets of fabric together with Judy Castro, fuse plastic with clothes irons, use sewing needles and conductive thread to make circuits embedded in bracelets and badges, and use motors and other tools to take Light Painting to a whole new level. In the skylight area, many local makers will share their passions. Henna artist Darcy Vasudev will draw some temporary tattoos, Meredith Scheff will showcase her soft circuitry, master puppeteer Dax Tran-Caffee will host a large scale stop-motion animation with cardboard puppets, Tim and Nicole will teach you to use some tools properly and creatively, and much more!
If you aren't able to attend in person, you can catch the interviews of the featured makers (including Moxie) online.

Needle Felted Lorax
I'm having fun seeing all the tributes to Dr. Suess today, and one of my favorites is this awesome needle felted Lorax from Megan of Radmegan.
While my Lorax may look mean, he really is a softie. He just wants his beloved trees to grow tall and strong, and to wish his creator, Dr. Seuss the happiest of birthdays.
Are you celebrating Suess in a crafty way? Let us know in the comments below!

Han Stitched First: The Star Wars Needlework Web Site
Two of my very favorite things, Star Wars and stitchery, come together over on the blog Han Stitched First. Started by Whatever James, it's a blog that celebrates Star Wars in all forms of needlework. There is even a Star Wars stitch-a-long for 2012. The above "Han Shot First" cross-stitch was created by Katie Kutthroat and featured on Han Stitched First. [via @TheCrochetDude!

How-To: Needle Felted Mitten Ornaments
I am a very recent convert to the joys of needle felting, but the whole process seems custom-made for holiday crafting! I love this tutorial for tiny needle felted mittens from Meg at Mega Crafty because it's so easy to customize colors and styles to fit personal preferences and home decor. Her method uses cookie cutters as a template, so, if mittens aren't your thing, you can use the same process with any shape that suits your fancy.

Needle Felted Kermit The Frog
Like Megan of Rad Megan, I'm very excited about the new Muppet movie coming out this fall. I can't think of a better way to celebrate its impending arrival than getting crafty. Her needle felted Kermit is a fabulous start. She captured his spirit beautifully! She hints that she'll likely be making more. I can't wait to see them!

Needle Felted Adventure Time Jake
The characters in Adventure Time lend themselves to being replicated in craft, and that is a very, very good thing. I love this needle felted Jake from Flickr user, michelleness. She says she's working on a set of Adventure Time felties, and I can not wait to see the rest. [via Mr. X Stitch]

Tiny Needle Felted Landscape Brooches From Lil Fish Studios
Lisa of Lil Fish Studios has been making some incredible tiny needle felted landscape brooches, and their detail is blowing me away. This one, her smallest to date, is mounted on a piece of deer antler that she cut and drilled. Be sure to check out her Flickr stream for more examples of her beautiful work.

The Dala Horse Craft-Along
Here's a fun story of crafters coming together over a common love. It began when Carina Envoldsen-Harris, Kathryn Sterrenberg, Hanna Andersson and Pam Harris all realized they shared a certain obsession with Dala horses.
From Carina's Blog:
"I love that Swedish icon, the Dala Horse so much and these ladies do too! You know how some little thing can turn into something a lot bigger? Well, that's what happened here: Pam asked me for suggestions decorations for a Dala horse she wanted to sew and then I said "I'm working on a Dala embroidery pattern!" and then we somehow ended up deciding that we should do a Dala Craftalong and Pam suggested we get Hanna and Kathryn involved too and then I think I kinda suggested that we should get the whole internet to craft along too!"
Dala Horses, as Carina mentions, are a traditional craft of Sweden, and Hanna, who lives there, has shared some insight into where and how they're made. Here's a wonderful video showing the traditional hand-painting techniques that decorate them:
It's fun seeing how all these crafters are interpreting the form differently, too - Kathryn needle-felted hers, Pam made a softie, Carina designed some fabrics, and Hanna made a collage.

If you also love Dala horses and want to get in on this craft-along, you can and get a button from Carina's blog (and a free Dala applique template, if you like). Just add your handmade Dala photos to the group's Flickr pool, and share them on your blog.
