The NY Times has a front page blurb and huge story on Maker Faire! - Maker Faire - Do-It-Yourself - Make Magazine - New York Times.

SAN MATEO, Calif. — The muffins are rolling. The muffin cars, electric-powered vehicles built to resemble cupcakes, scoot around the open spaces of the San Mateo Event Center & Expo, a sprawling fairground about 20 miles south of San Francisco and, on this day, a million miles from normal.

Just inside the gates of the third annual Maker Faire, a converted fire engine belches an occasional explosive flare that sends a chest-pounding Pfoomp! throughout the fairground, startling bystanders over and over again. That contraption was made by folks from the Crucible, an industrial arts studio based in Oakland where people can take lessons in welding, blacksmithing and many, many other ways to play with heat and flame.

It was fun to see everyone this past weekend at the Maker Faire CRAFT area! Thanks to everyone who stopped by and said hi. I worked the booth with Tina Barseghian our new Editor in Chief of CRAFT and Becky Stern, fellow CRAFT blogger.

In the area we had lots of crafty demos every hour from how to make your own shoes to soft circuit embroidery. The Needlefelting Playground in the CRAFT Corner by Moxie and Brookelynn was constantly busy with new obsessive needlefelters! I even had a chance to finish my needlefelted cuff I was working on last year by late Sunday afternoon! Read on after the jump for more photos and the full crafty recap.

At Maker Faire this weekend I got to enjoy the Postcard Machine by Michelle Ott in the Craft Zone. Above is a video from the Renegade Craft Faire in Chicago, since my video didn't come out at nice. Michelle sits in the "machine" making bleepy noises while you select your postcard and insert cash into the slot. You get a lot more than a postcard; you get a spectacularly crafted performance.

Andrew "Bruce" Lau made this amazing LED cape and wore it around Maker Faire all weekend. I caught up with him to chat about it, and he said that Leah Buechley's LED tank top was a huge inspiration. He used her suggested technique of soldering metal beads to surface mount LEDs and stitching them in a grid using conductive thread. Controlled by a PIC microcontroller, the cape scrolls letters saying "MAKE" and "DIY as well as traveling patterns.

Just a reminder here if you're anywhere near Los Angeles this Sunday, November 18, I hope you'll visit the campus of Los Angeles City College for the second annual Felt Club: XL Holiday event. We're featuring handmade amazingness from over 70 artists, crafters, and designers from SoCal and beyond--many of whom will be offering holiday-exclusive items, such as these fun "Gingerbread Boy" ornaments from vendor MyPaperCrane.

But Felt Club isn't just about crafts you can buy (although that sure is handy with the holidays fast approaching!). We've also got an entire day's worth of hands-on classes happening, everything from Needle Felting 101 with Maryjane's Attic to Bead Simple Jewelry with CRAFT contributor Susan Beal. There will also be a one-hour Craft Biz 101 talk from Craft, Inc. author Meg Mateo Ilasco--a great opportunity for any of you who may be on the fence about starting your own handmade business.

We'll also be giving away killer door prizes from our vendors and sponsors (sneak peeks are available in our Flickr pool), and swag bags will be given to the first 250 people through the doors. (You can increase your chances of being one of them by purchasing an advance ticket at one of our seven ticket locations throughout LA.) We'll have food available too, from local fave Auntie Em's Kitchen--plus music from DJs Dirty Robot and Lance Rock (host of Nickelodeon's hit kid's show Yo Gabba Gabba).

If all that isn't enough to grab you, this year we've also got the all-new Maker Square area, a mini version of Maker Faire, hosted by the staff of Make and Craft magazines. If you're new to the world of Makers, think "offbeat science fair" and you're not too far off. We're so happy to be able to add this extra element to Felt Club, which will make things even more fun and interactive. The Maker Square portion of Felt Club will feature people like Syuzi Pakhchyan and her Soft Circuits LED felt holiday ornaments, Mister Jalopy, who will demonstrate his Mobile Drive-In Movie Projector (featured on the cover of MAKE Vol.11), Jason Torchinsky's "Super Stick", a 5-foot tall Atari 2600 joystick (which actually works!!), Jed Berk and his Blubberbots, and many more. In short, Maker Square is DIY meets techno-nerdiness at it's best! Link.

At Maker Faire Austin Oct 20-21, the California Cars Initiative will sponsor an open source Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) "Conversion Demonstration". PHEV conversions to Toyota Prius hybrids add an additional battery pack that can be plugged in at night so that the electric energy is used to displace gasoline to get over 100 miles per gallon of gasoline plus about $.02/mile of electricity. This conversion will provide this performance for the first 20 miles of daily driving. (Others, using more costly batteries can provide up to 50 miles a day of PHEV driving.) After the energy in the second pack is depleted, the converted vehicle seamlessly operates as a standard hybrid vehicle. Batteries for this conversion are being supplied by CleanPower Battery Technologies, Inc. California Cars Initiative is a nonprofit group of entrepreneurs, engineers, environmentalists, drivers and consumers promoting plug-in hybrid cars through advocacy and demonstration projects. CalCars sponsors the EAA-PHEV project that has designed this conversion. For more information, visit the CalCars site here. Link.

Edible Austin Magazine will be on hand at Maker Faire hosting the special "Food Maker Pavilion and Demonstration Area," showcasing local food makers, artisans and growers. Over 25 food makers and farmers will be on hand with samples, products for sale, and useful advice on how they make their wares. Other participating groups include: Texas Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, American Grassfed Association, Sustainable Food Center, Green Corn Project and Urban Roots.

"Knowing where your food comes from is a powerful thing," says Marla Camp, publisher of Edible Austin. "This year at Maker Faire you can meet the people who make and grow your food and learn how rewarding it is to make and grow more of your own."

At the Food Maker Pavilion, Maker Faire participants can catch a variety of food-making demonstrations, including:

Beer making

Cheese making

Bee keeping & honey making

Butter making

Pasta making

How to cook bison

How to cook with vodka

How to create organic tea fertilizer

How to build a square foot garden

Handmade tools and using hand tools for cooking

There will also be fun activities you can take part in such as the Sustainable Pumpkin Painting -- paint pumpkins and take home recipes for what to do with your pumpkin after Halloween! There will be an ongoing "Talk To A Farmer" booth where you can ask local farmers and producers questions about what they do and how they do it. Also, don't miss the Day of the Dead interactive food art altar, where you can bring items and create the alter on-site with help from Austin Green Art.

Here are the details for KQED's Maker Faire video airing on Tuesday 730 pm in HD! Set your recording devices --

The QUEST team would like you to know that QUEST’s TV story, Do-it-Yourself Science: The Maker Faire, is set to premiere on KQED next Tuesday, September 25th, as one of the segments in the episode. Thanks so much for sharing your time and being part of this story! The story will air Tuesday at 7:30 pm on KQED 9 & KQED HD on Comcast 709. On Tuesday, the story will be posted on the QUEST website in its entirety - so you'll also be able to watch it there.

It's been called "Burning Man for science geeks." The annual Maker Faire attracts thousands of amateur inventors and scientists, displaying their home-made prototypes and gadget hacks. In a world where the technological race is speeding up, the Maker movement has revealed that the do-it-yourself culture is in no danger of dying out.

We are excited to work with Firstgiving at Maker Faire Austin and wanted to let you know more about it before the big event! Firstgiving lets anyone raise money for any nonprofit at any time, by using person to person fundraising pages to leverage personal connections and social networks.

If you're a nonprofit, you can set up a fundraising page for yourself and everyone who stops by the Firstgiving booth at Maker Faire will be invited to donate, if they'd like to. Having seen your work firsthand,
we expect a lot of people to be excited about helping you stay in business.

If you'd like to raise money for some other nonprofit, you can turn what you do (baking, modding bikes, distilling grain alcohol, etc.) into a fundraising "catalyst." Then everyone who stops by the Firstgiving booth will be invited to donate to your "baking for charity" page.

For more information email alison@firstgiving.com with any questions or to get involved, and visit the Firstgiving web site here. - Link.
