Maker Faire Twitter Talk
One of the most fun things I've been doing this week is following folks who are tweeting about Maker Faire. There have been great conversations, lots of excitement, pictures (see Crafty Chica's Maker Faire Prep picture above) and even a few contests. Be sure to follow all the Maker Faire action through CRAFT, MAKE and Maker Faire, and if you are at the Faire, please use the official Maker Faire hashtag of #mf09 in all your posts. Can't wait to see you there!
Here's some of the Maker Faire Twitter buzz from this week:
From CraftyChica: http://twitpic.com/5yzco - Prepping for my Maker Faire make-and-take.
From TheCashmereKid: Maker Faire Needlearts Stitch Zone booth #261 giving away free looms or download yours now http://www.spinweave.org/resources/instruct.html
From Charmingsam: I finally got up pics and deets on what I'll have for people to make at Maker Faire http://www.charmingsam.blogspot.com
From QueenPuffPuff: is in very good shape for Maker Faire. Tomorrow will finish sewing and then can tag and pack on Thursday. Lots of new styles!

Foxy Monster at Maker Faire Bay Area
![]() | ![]() |
Last year, at Maker Faire Austin, it was fun to see photos of folks walking around with big furry bear hoods on, and the crafter responsible for all the furry fun is Ashley Larson of Foxy Monster. Ashley's mission is to "spread smiles, joy, love, and goofiness, while keeping heads and necks warm." Ashley will be bringing her furrrrocious handmade hoods to Maker Faire Bay Area this weekend, May 30th and 31st. Can't wait to meet her and get my fur on!

Reaffirming The Value of Makers, Risk-Takers And Innovators
It's official! The County of San Mateo, California has proclaimed May 30 and 31 "Maker's Weekend." I've seen loads of proclamations before, but I have to admit ... I haven't thoroughly read them. However, reading this proclamation from the County of San Mateo reminds me why I love Maker Faire so much and how important it is - as the proclamation states - not only to the community, but also to humanity. Take a second and read through it below and ask yourself how you can bring this kind of energy and ingenuity to your own community and beyond.
Maker's Weekend
Proclaimed by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, state of California, that
WHEREAS, Maker Faire celebrates the County of San Mateo's creativity, ingenuity, and the Do-It-Yourself spirit; and
WHEREAS, it brings together artists, crafters, engineers, hackers, food makers, music makers and scientists who like to tinker and who love to make things; and
WHEREAS, this family-friendly weekend encourages resourcefulness, green ethos and an overall passion for learning for Makers of all ages; and
WHEREAS, it reaffirms the value of Makers, risk-takers and innovators in San Mateo County as both contributors to the community and humanity;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County hereby designates May 30th and 31st, 2009 as Maker's Weekend in San Mateo County and urges every member of our community to continue the innovative and creative spirit of a Maker.

Jenine Bressner is a talented glass artist from Rhode Island as well as an all-around kind and enthusiastic crafter. Viewing her gallery of amazing handmade creations is sure to blow your mind. Jenine has been at two previous Maker Faires and we're thrilled she's making the trek from the East Coast to join us again this year. She is going to be showing us Glass Flamework with a Portable Setup! Come meet her in San Mateo on May 30th and 31st and learn how her creations come to be. In her own words, "Flameworking, lampworking, or torchworking glass is an affordable and portable practice for anyone who wants to try hot glass sculpture on a small scale. It's like drawing mid-air with molten glass!" Check out this great video that showcases many of Jenine's pieces. Jenine collaborated with Arley Rose Torsone for Bjork's Innocence video competition. Jenine made the Bjork doll and constructed the sets, as well as flameworked all of the glass components throughout the video.
Today is the last day to get advanced pricing on tickets. Get your tickets now and come play with us!

Bazaare Bizarre is proud to announce that half of this year's lineup is new and emerging crafters (never have vended at a craft show before)! Please check out the vendor gallery to see who'll be at the Faire, and check out Doug MacNeil's vendor interviews. We can't wait to see you there!

Countdown to Maker Faire: Meet The Makers Part 1
Elaine from Rock n Roll Crafts will be showing off her stenciled tees.
With the use of a heat setting ink and some really cool graphic stencils, I can spray custom t shirts and have them wearable in less than 5 minutes. I work on pre washed cotton t shirts and use stencils from Stencil 1 in Brooklyn. Anybody can choose any image they want, any color from my rainbow of sprays and then I iron for a few minutes...voila! Custom T shirt. This is a great way to pep up an old t shirt or customize a new one. It also works great on canvas shoppers!
Lynne Bruning will be exploring various methods of weaving that incorporate conductive thread and electronics to make your own eTextiles.
Spin with the Spindles and Flyers Folks! "Learn to make your own drop spindle and to spin wool into wonderful yarn. Take home your new yarn or donate it, knitting or weaving your special yarn into the World's Longest Scarf, benefiting Heifer International."

Share a Ride to Maker Faire Bay Area 2009
Our Maker Faire Bay Area 2009 is only 4 weeks away on May 30th and 31st at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds! Maker Faire is the world's largest DIY festival, so you won't want to miss it. In a nutshell, it's a two-day, family-friendly event to MAKE, create, learn, invent, CRAFT, recycle, think, play, and be inspired by celebrating arts, crafts, engineering, food, music, science and technology.
Every year, we strive to green our festival more and more. Last year, about 65,000 people came out to play with us, and this year we're expecting even more. If you are planning on joining us (which we hope you are), it's not to early to plan how you'll be getting there. One great option is to share a ride. We've set up a Maker Faire page on PickupPal to make coordinating that ride share easier. Check it out, make some new friends, and we'll see you there!
Pssst, you can also still get discounted advanced purchase pricing on your Maker Faire tickets until May 20th!

Ask CRAFT: Navigating Maker Faire

Amy Zimmer from Sebastopol, CA writes in:
I would love to go to the maker faire in San Mateo--but crowds flip me out! Do you have any suggestions or must sees for navigating for a crafty mostly gift giver type crafter (and maybe her two girls, ages 10 and 14)?
I think each of us experiences a bit of enochlophobia or agorophobia at some point during Maker Faire; there are just so many people! Well, Amy, you should definitely check it out, it's a great event for the whole family, and here are some tips that might make the experience more enjoyable for you and everybody else who's not at piece in a crowd of tens of thousands:
Buy your tickets in advance
Avoid the ticket line by buying your tickets online in advance.
Check the Maker Faire site regularly
In the weeks before Maker Faire, there will be more and more information published to the Maker Faire site including schedules of demos, makers who'll be attending, and information about transportation to/from the Faire. This will help you know what to expect to see, which should make the visit a little less overwhelming
Make a loose plan for the day
Using the schedule provided online and onsite at the Maker Faire, decide which demos and events are a must for you and your girls (diet Coke and Mentos at 12:30? Soft circuit demo at 11am?), and then plan your day around those. Know which maker and crafter booths you want to get to, and allot time to get to them between time-specific events. By all means, also allow time for unexpected things to catch your eye, but having a plan of attack can help you feel in-control.
Shop early
If you plan to shop in the Bazaar Bizarre and/or Maker Shed, do it early in the day. Sure, you'll have to carry around your purchases with you, but this is when the crowds are smaller in these parts of the Faire.
Find some quiet time
This one is the hardest tip to actually implement, but it can certainly help. Find a shady grassy spot to eat lunch or otherwise relax and reflect. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated (oh, what a difference it can make in your energy level and mood)!
I hope those tips are helpful to you, and that you'll come out and see us at Maker Faire! Have you been to Maker Faire before and have tips for Amy? Share them in the comments below!
If you have a question you'd like answered here on Ask CRAFT, drop me an email or tweet at us!

Call for Swap-o-Rama-Rama Volunteers For Maker Faire 2009
One of the most fun, active areas of the crafty side of Maker Faire is the Swap-o-Rama-Rama clothing refashion extravaganza. Between the mounds of clothes waiting to embark on their second lives, the whir of dozens of sewing machines filling the air, and the steady stream of screen printers leaving their mark on everything from shirts to skirts, it's a crafter's utopia. A great way to participate in Swap-o-Rama-Rama and get a behind-the-scenes look at the biggest clothing swap/refashion event around is to volunteer. Now is your chance: the call for volunteers for the 2009 Swap-o-Rama-Rama at Maker Faire Bay Area is open. See below for full details.
Join in the communal process of reuse and celebrate our collective creativity! You are invited to participate in Swap-O-Rama-Rama as staff. Swap-O-Rama-Rama is a giant clothing swap and series of do-it-yourself workshops in which a community explores reuse and creativity through the recycling of used clothing. At Swap-O-Rama-Rama consumers are taught to be creators and this transformation takes place through the local talent, crafters, designers and artists in the community.
HOW CAN I BE PART OF SWAP-O-RAMA-RAMA 2009?
There are a wide range of volunteer opportunities for all skill levels, talents and styles this year! Here's a short list of what you can get involved in!
1. Project Based Stations
2. DIY Sewing Station Star / Mechanical Genius
3. DIY Workshops (see previous workshops)
4. Re-Make Fashion Show ( see previous fashion show Images)
5. Production Staff
Make It Happen!
As designers, crafters and artists, and business people, oftentimes we're not able to connect in our communities outside of our business and working relationships. Swap-O-Rama-Rama is a chance for each and every one of us to give back and share our skills, talent, experience and enthusiasm with people who have come to learn, explore and imagine. At the same time, the swap is a vehicle for all skill and experience levels to participate and co-create a maker-experience. All are welcome! This is your chance to engage and inspire open hearts and open hands.

Bazaar Bizarre Applications Open For Maker Faire Bay Area
Don't forget: it's time to apply for Bazaar Bizarre at Maker Faire Bay Area! The application deadline is April 1, so you still have time for a chance to participate in this fantastic craft fair at Maker Faire Bay Area. I talked with Bazaar Bizarre co-organizer, Jamie Chan, and got the low down on what to expect with this year's event.
How long has Bazaar Bizarre been a part of Maker Faire Bay Area?
Bazaar Bizarre was asked to be a part of the Maker Faire Event since their inception in 2006. We're honored to be a continuing part of the Maker Faires (San Mateo and last year Austin) and feel that our juried craft show has become a well attended attraction for Maker Faire visitors.
What kind of vendors are you looking for for this year's event?
We're looking to host approximately 70 indie crafters at Maker Faire. Bazaar Bizarre supports artists and craftspeople that appeal to the aesthetic of the "indie art and craft scene" and have innovative approaches to traditional craft forms. We're interested in showing a combination of "alum" vendors, many of whom have started their selling career with our show and new, emerging talent. We believe it is this mix which makes for a successful show.
How as Bazaar Bizarre evolved over the last few years?
The Bay Area Bazaar Bizarre's now have a commitment to giving back to our community. Each year at our winter show we will give a percentage of our door fees back to non-profit arts and crafts programs.
What can vendors expect from the Bazaar Bizarre experience?
Vendors can expect to be part of a carefully juried craft fair. Unlike many other craft shows, we have always have more applicants than spaces available. The Bazaar Bizarre Maker Faire show is small (under 80 vendors) which enables us to deliver a generous customer to vendor ratio. We support our vendors by supplying volunteers throughout the show, early set-up options and promotional opportunities through our blog and newsletter.
What can visitors expect from Bazaar Bizarre?
Visitors can expect to find some of the most talented and prominent indie crafters and artists in the country. Visitors can find special show prices and limited edition products from some of our vendors. These shows are a great place for vendors to try out new ideas....some of which may never make it to their regular product lines. From reconstructed t-shirts, hand pulled screen prints, one of a kind paintings, ceramics, steampunk jewelry to plush tampons....Bazaar Bizarre has it all. You will discover new products and connect with the artists and crafters who made them!
What advice would you give to those folks interested in applying for Baz Biz?
Please read all the details of our application page. You can see pictures of previous Bay Area Bazaar Bizarres to get an idea of what kind of aesthetic we've tried to cultivate. Be sure to have a comprehensive application, with as much information as possible about your business. Good product pictures are key for application review. If you don't know how to take pictures of your product you may want to ask a fellow crafter to help you make a nice portfolio of your work.
You don't need to have a web store, as long as there is somewhere online (like Flickr) where you can show us your products, it will help judges make a more informed decision about your application.
It is very important you understand that rejection from one show will not exclude you from acceptance to future shows. We never have the ability to take all the vendors we would like and the pool of applicants will vary from show to show. The judges are making their decisions with your best interest in mind and sometimes they genuinely feel certain products may not be a good fit for our attendees. We know that over time people change their product lines and style, so we're always willing to review you again in our future show applications.
Lastly, the best way to prepare your application: ATTEND a Bazaar Bizarre! Meet current vendors, collaborate with them for a future show and introduce yourself to our indie community. If you like to craft, aspire to sell your crafts or just appreciate handmade we encourage you to come out and be a part of the Bazaar Bizarre experience.
