I spent the weekend at the CRAFT area at Maker Faire next to the fun folks at Lion Brand Yarn. (More on Maker Faire soon...) I just found out they launched the a new blog, called the Lion Brand Notebook covering everything from projects like plastic bag crochet (shown above), Tips and how-tos, up and coming fiber news, and also roundup posts of the fabulous Yarncraft podcast by Zontee and Liz. Definitely a great blog to add to your RSS reader!

Vickie Howell's new book Knit Aid: A Learn It, Fix It, Finish It Guide for Knitters on the Go is now available! This spiral bound compact book is your one-stop knitting reference that no knitter should do without. You know when you are in a project and you just need to just remember how to "yarn over purlwise" or remember what the knitting abbreviation "psso" means? This book is a lifesaver because you can easily look up knitting terms. I also love all the reference material for yarn weight, standard garment sizing, and the attached gauge ruler with knitting needle sizing. Plus if you forget how to cast on, don't worry. Vickie gives you five ways to cast on to refresh your memory or teach you a better method. There are also illustrated stitch guides on how to do basic knitting stitches. And for when you've made a mistake, Vickie's there to show you how to fix them, such as fixing a dropped stitch or "unknitting" where you can knit backwards and fix a small mistake. This book is the perfect size to tote around in your knitting bag and the spiral bound book is so useful because it can lay flat as you work on your stitches. You'll find yourself going back to this book again and again for all your knitting projects over the years. Hey, it's also perfect for a Mother's Day gift for moms who knit!

Yarnbombing has put out a submission call for an upcoming book:

Are you a knitter or crochetier? Do you design (or want to design) unusual pieces of street art out of yarn? If so, you should design a pattern for Yarn Bombing: The Art of Knit Graffiti, to be published by Arsenal Pulp Press in fall 2009. A DIY guide to the art of yarn graffiti and a history of hand-crafted textile street art, Yarn Bombing will feature patterns such as street-smart disguises, useful wearable tools like gloves and tool belts, street art such as knit car cozies, bike covers and headlight toques, and outdoor installations such as crochet shawls for leafy trees. The sky's the limit as long as it's knit or crocheted! Projects should be fun, colorful and a little bit wacky. Designers are asked to submit a sketch and detailed description of their project, along with a brief bio, by the submission deadline of May 30, 2008.

I've been working on a project where I knit sweaters to go from gadgets to your body. They're supposed to be a fun commentary on how attached and concentrated on technology we are, and to highlight the lack of movement that happens when we're engrossed in our laptops, keyboards, PDAs, etc. I plan on making many more, and would be curious what ideas fellow crafters might have for different iterations. the one pictured above is for privacy, warmth, and concentration in public spaces while using a laptop.
