O Rly Scarf

ORLY_scarf_mockup.jpg

scarfrly2.jpg

I finally finished my last unfinished knitting project, this scarf with two O Rly owls on it. It's for my friend Justin, who asked for it special. One end says "O Rly?" and other other, "Ya Rly." Because I hate the way carried-yarn patterns have a front and back, I tried to weave the carried yarn through the knit-1-purl-1 pattern of the scarf, but I'm not quite happy with it. Sure, the image has no front and back now (except the readability of the text), but it's a bit dense, not stretchy, and slow-going. I made a pattern you can download, as well, if you want to make it. - Link.

Knifty Knitter

KniftyKnitter_sm.jpg

Krista Wilson Muldoon wrote an awesome review of these "Knifty Knitter" knitting templates for Cool Tools:
The problem I have with regular knitting is getting started. With a hat, for example, I have a lot of trouble getting my size just right and having the first row look neat and not sloppy. Knifty Knitters completely eliminate the size problem and allow you to make the first row just as neat as every other row. Each loom is basically a round circle with pegs on it. Since you are wrapping the yarn on preset pegs, the problem of keeping the stitches the same length is eliminated. I made my first hat while watching a movie. As you work, your hat starts to build up and hang down underneath as you go, which is pretty neat to watch. When it is long enough (the directions tell you how long for different sizes), you use this plastic needle to thread a piece of yarn through the loops at the end and drawstring it tight and tie.

(Manly) Cable Scarf

malabrigoscarfsm.jpg
If you are looking for a really last minute gift idea, check out the Manly Cable Scarf posted by Sarah Morgan. The knitting pictured is the scarf I started knitting last night. I really like the simplicity of the pattern and that cool edge stitch. My only complaint is that I think this scarf pattern is great for both men and women. Link.

Phil @ MAKE writes about this scarf featuring not only Space Invaders, but a QR 2D barcode. I have a soft spot for barcodes; will someone make me one of these? I wonder what the code says... - [via] Link.

KnitKnit Reading at ImagiKnit

knitk.jpg

knit.jpg

I popped over to ImagiKnit, one of my favorite yarn stores in San Francisco, on Wednesday night to see Sabrina Gschwandtner talk about her new book, KnitKnit. Subitled "Profiles + Projects from Knitting's New Wave," it's an amazing gathering of knitwear designers, artists and activists, and includes patterns for everything from a delicate Anna Bell sweater to a huge fiberglas teddy bear. If you're still looking for a gift for the knitter in your life, this is an awesome find. It's not often that a gorgeous coffee table book also has patterns!

The audience was of course dressed in amazing knitwear (the green sweater in the top photo is handmade by the wearer, and another woman showed off the sweater coat she's currently working on--the pattern is one of Anna Bell's from her blog, I think.) I've known Sabrina for a number of years now, and it was great to hear her talk about her background as an artist and filmmaker and see how it informed the choices she made in the book. I also loved hearing about her travels around the world to interview all her subjects--they're an amazing group of people. And believe it or not, according to Sabrina's pattern editor at Stewart, Tabori and Chang, the best-written pattern is that fiberglas teddy bear...

KnitML Standardizes Knitting Patterns

knitml.jpg

Finally, a proposal for a universally standardized way of writing knitting patterns!
Imagine being able to do the following for any KnitML-based pattern:
  • Render a pattern in either written directions or a chart, dependent on a preference setting
  • Render a pattern in any language, using conventions familiar to that language and dialect
  • Validate that a pattern is physically possible to knit (eliminating some types of errata)
  • Automatically convert English measurements to and from metric measurements
  • Size a pattern up or down to any size, not just the sizes that come with the pattern
  • Recalculate a pattern for your gauge rather than the one that came with the pattern
  • Explicitly write out mathematically complex directions (e.g., "increase 34 stitches evenly over 171 stiches")
  • Alter the pattern using an easy-to-use graphical editor (or create new KnitML-based pattern from scratch)
  • Preview the result of a pattern using graphics
  • Integrate into your favorite knitting software (such as Sweater Wizard)
  • Digitally sign the pattern to guarantee original authenticity
