Candy-Striped Legwarmers

FruityLegwarmers.jpg

My pal Cynthia recently posted these fresh and fun legwarmers on her blog and I'm crazy about 'em! She says they're super stretchy and will fit skinny and plump calves with no problem, and they sound easy to knit up as well:

The basic formula: worsted weight yarn, 56 stitches knit in the round, 2x2 rib...for as long as you'd like em. (These were about 17" long.)

I also love the colors she used, which are from the Lion Brand "Vanna's Choice" collection. Link.

Knitted Bangles Redux

CableBangle.jpg

Craftster user Vysews used See Mi Knit's knitted bangle tutorial to make the cozy yet elegant pair of bangle bracelets pictured above. I like how she switched things up with the cable pattern--click on the second page of the project thread to find out how she did it. I also think a lacy, open stitch knitted over a wooden bracelet would look really cool. [via] Link.

Crafting Protest Panel Discussion

sabrinaneedles.jpg

Douglas writes in to tell us about this inspiring panel discussion to be held at my alma mater, The New School. From the site:

Many contemporary artists are using craft to make diverse and timely political statements. Because creating crafts is so often social and communal, they can play a vital role in the public sphere. The speakers examine the role of craft in forming national identities, especially in times of political turmoil or war; notions of patriotism; feminism and the domestic sphere; and unconventional economic models. Five artists will present projects and discuss their work. By linking the act of production and handmaking in the public realm to ideological issues of agency, participants ask how art makes political subjects. Following the discussion is a participatory component that includes collective crafting activities. Panelists include Liz Collins, artist/designer; Sabrina Gschwandtner, artist/curator; Cat Mazza, artist/activist; and Allison Smith, visual artist. Moderator: Julia Bryan-Wilson, art historian and critic, University of California at Irvine. This lecture is co-sponsored by Modern Painters and Artists & Audiences Exchange, a public program of the New York Foundation for the Arts.

The talk will be on January 26th from 3-5pm. If you're in the New York City area, I highly recommend it! - Link.

Movie Inspired Knits - Sweater from About a Boy

Aboutaboy
Hannah Fettig, author of the upcoming new book Closely Knit, shares with us her movie inspired knitting from the movie, About a Boy. This sweater is from the dead duck day scene and you can see the sweater in this music video for the movie by Badly Drawn Boy.

Hannah writes:

This sweater was a special request from my cousin's brother. He had been trying to find someone to knit the sweater that Marcus wears in About a Boy. When he found out I knit, he begged me to knit it for him. I knew exactly which sweater he was talking about, and was totally up for it. The model in the photograph is my friend Brian Emerson. I took the photos just before I shipped it off to Stephen in New Jersey. Apparently he wears it every day!

You can find out more about Hannah's projects and upcoming book, on her blog Knitbot. - Link.

Tubular Cast Off in Knitting

Tubucastoffph2
Techknitting shows us how to do a tubular cast off when knitting in the round.

Techknitter writes:

Knitters often complain that their casts on look so different from their casts off, but after this post, YOU, dear reader, will no longer be able to complain about this particular annoyance. In examining the exposed fabric edge, the most eagle-eyed expert will find it impossible to say whether your tubular ribbing edges were created by a cast ON or a cast OFF.

NetWorking by Artist Anni Holm in Chicago, Jan 14-16

Img 2609
NetWorking is an ongoing knitting installation and performance art piece originally created by Nyok-Mei Wong & Anni Holm in 2006. The event comes again to Chicago at the James R. Thompson Center Atrium (100 W. Randolph at the Clark/Lake Stop) on January 14-16 from 11am - 2pm.

From the site:

The NetWorking project is an attempt to physically demonstrate how a network is constructed and constantly changing. The viewers are invited to sit down and knit with the artist, and through dialogue develop their own networks beyond the boundaries of the piece.
Event details are in the press release PDF. You can also find out more on what's happening at the NetWorking blog. Link.
