Refashioned Undies into Cute Knit Headband

Underwearheadband
Three cheers to Katherine of Own Two Hands for looking stylish for wearing her underwear on her head. What's that you ask? Yes we all know it's easy to knit out old t-shirts or fabric straps by cutting them into strips. Katherine went one step further and took her newly purchased, worn-only-once-and-uncomfortable-as-hell panties and refashioned them into a cute headband. Link.

Bobble-Texture Baby Hat

lilly_hat.jpg

This pattern is from an old 1970s baby pattern book, and makes an adorable, warm, and soft hat. The texture involves scrunching rows vertically to make little bobbles stick out. I used Baby Ull yarn in cream and black (because I ran out of cream), and I used size 3 needles.

The pattern:
BACK- cast on 77 sts for neck edge.
Row 1-wrong side- P3, *K1, P1; repeat from *, end last repeat P3.
Row 2-Decrese row- K1, SKP, work ribbing to within 3 sts of end, K2tog, K1.
Row 3-P2, work ribbing to within 2 sts of end, P2.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 three times, repeat row 2 once again; 67 sts.
PATTERN and SHAPING-Row 1-P.
Row 2- Decrease row- K1, SKP, K to within 3 sts of end, K2tog, K1.
Row 3-P.
Row 4- Same as row 2; 63 sts.
Row 5-P.
Row 6-right side-K3, *drop right st and ravel for 4 rows, insert needle in 5th row below and under the 4 raveled loops, K this st tog. with the 4 loops, K3; repeat from * to end.
Repeat these 6 rows 9 times, repeat rows 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 again; 23 sts.
Next row-Sl 1, K2tog, pass sl st over the K2tog, work as for pat. row 6 to within 3 sts of end, K3tog, 19 sts. Sl these 19 sts to holder. Break yarn.
FRONT- Cast on 89 sts. Work as for back; 31 sts.
Decrease row- P2tog twice, *P2tog, P1; repeat from * 6 times, P2tog 3 times; 19 sts.
Break yarn leaving 20 in. end for weaving. Weave these 19 sts to 19 sts of back.
FINISHING- Sew edges of back to edges of front.

I added little twisty ties to the sides, though the pattern calls for a chin strap which buttons on one side.

Voice Knitting Machine

gelsomina1.jpg

Another knitting project from the Campus 2.0. of Ars Electronica, Gelsomina, uses a hacked knitting machine to translate voice recordings into stitches.
How does it feel when a sweater becomes a medium with which to record your own voice? Gelsomina, the voice knitting machine, makes it possible to transfer individual vocal melodies to a piece of clothing so that they become visible in the different varieties of knitted patterns.
Regine at We Make Money Not Art has a nice article about the Voice Knitting Machine. Link.

Newsknitter

newsknitter.jpg

Mahir M. Yavuz and Ebru Kurbak, students at Kunstuniversität Linz, have created Newsknitter, a process through which headlines are transformed into beautiful patterns on unique sweaters.

They write:
"News Knitter converts information gathered from the daily political news into clothing. Live news feed from the Internet that is broadcasted within 24 hours or a particular period is analyzed, filtered and converted into a unique visual pattern for a knitted sweater. The system consists of two different types of software: whereas one receives the content from live feeds the other converts it into visual patterns, and a fully computerized flat knitting machine produces the final output. Each product, sweater of News Knitter is an evidence/result of a specific day or period."

The sweaters will be part of the Ars Electronica festival this week. - [via] Link.

(Thanks, Jonathan)!
