Five-Minute Crafts
When I saw the following tweet from Kids Craft Weekly, "There is no such thing as being too busy to craft - all you need is five minutes!" I was intrigued. I'm always having to remind myself that I don't necessarily need long stretches of time to exercise some creative muscles. The latest issue of Kids Craft Weekly focuses on just that idea, and serves up several crafts that can be completed in about five minutes. Sure, they are geared toward kids, but they can also be a fun excuse for quick crafting for adults! Sometimes, that's all you need to get yourself out of a creative rut.

How-To: Create a Knitted Baby Cocoon

Hand knit cocoons are a beautiful and simple keepsake to create for a baby. Enveloping the baby in warmth and softness creates the perfect image for a portrait. Bulky yarn and extra large needles create a soft stockinette that stretches and hugs the baby. I kept the pattern as simple as can be: it's just a stockinette rectangle, and it knits up quickly due to the gauge of yarn.

Humboldt County Fair Decorated Potato Contest
Garth Johnson of Extreme Craft has a knack for picking out the wacky and wonderful. He now soaks up the country life living in Humboldt County, and he did a fun post about the creative entries to the annual Decorated Potato Contest at the Humboldt County Fair (an annual event that's been going on since 1896!). He has more pics on his Flickr page. I love that all of the entries are dioramas and the greatest tool used was clearly creativity. There's no how-to required for this one, just old fashion low-tech fun, which is inspirational in itself. Three cheers for playing with your food!

Stitched Car Mat Mini-Quilt From Child's Drawing
Ellen from The Long Thread created this charming car mat mini quilt from her daughter's drawing on a magnetic doodle board. Ellen scanned the image in to the computer, traced it in Illustrator and digitized it for machine embroidery. The same could be done to create a pattern for hand embroidery. I've always loved the ideas of using children's illustrations for stitching, and this fun little mat for driving cars is just fantastic!
