How-To Tuesdays: Fabric Scrap Necklace
At my shop, we save pretty much every bit of scrap fabric. We can always find a use for it, whether it's for practice stitching by Sewing 101 students, as furoshiki-style wrapping, or to tie up half-yard cuts of fabric. I've seen a lot of fun fabric jewelry on craft blogs lately, and with so much scrap fabric on hand, I figured it was high time I tried my hand at it. Here's what I came up with.

How-To: Leather Chain Necklace

I'm sure this would work well if made out of faux leather or even Ultrasuede or another grainless microfiber, but I'm liking the shape and soft look of this easy-to-make leather chain necklace.

Bead Fob Jewelry
Bead Fob Jewelry
By Brini Maxwell
I just love white jewelry. It's so fresh and clean and looks great at summer affairs. I got inspired to make some white jewelry using beads and headpins recently. The technique I use results in bead fobs, which can be massed together in different pieces. The two I've made are a charm bracelet (pictured above) and a massed pendant. Here's how to do it, along with some other project ideas at the end.

Book Excerpt: Radial Raindrop Earrings from Kilobyte Couture
Kilobyte Couture is a fun new book written by Brittany Forks and published by Watson-Guptill. Brittany offers simple tutorials on how to make jewelry from easy-to-find computer components. In the introduction, Brittany writes:
For most of my college career, I worked in the Electrical and Computer Engineering building. This gave me access to more geeks and computers than I could shake a stick at. I loved the fact that if I had a computer problem, I could just ask around until I found somebody who was an expert. One day at work I found a box of old resistors and capacitors, and they came in such beautiful colors: sky blue, bright orange, and sea foam green. I immediately wanted to make something with these spare parts, but what? Then it hit me: jewelry! I quickly went to the craft store and bought a few tools, and then came back and started crafting. At first I just gave my pieces to friends and family; but after a while the idea came to me to put them on the Internet, so I began selling my little creations on Etsy.com. To my delight, they sold well, so I took it to the next level by building a professional website. Thus, Kilobyte Couture was born.
Today, we share with you an excerpted project from the book: the Radial Raindrop earrings (pictured above), which use 4 resistors and 2 capacitors to create some serious geek couture. Download the PDF to start crafting, and pick up a copy of Brittany's book for lots more where that came from!
If you're interested in finding out what resistors and capacitors really do, there are no hotter videos online explaining them than on our sister site, makezine.com. Check out Collin Cunningham breaking down The Resistor and The Capacitor.

Layered Pearl Necklace Tutorial

Style Me Pretty has a tutorial on how to make this gorgeous layered pearl necklace worn by Stephanie on her wedding day. This necklace is so modern and fresh, you don't have to be a bride to wear it. You could even layer in different chains and beads if you aren't into pearls.

Ribbon Flower Pin Tutorial
Calli over at Make It Do has a simple tutorial for these sweet ribbon flower pins. She used 4 yards of yellow ribbon to make the pin shown above. I just love how full the flower is, and the ribbon choice makes it really classy. Calli says it looks just like the peonies in her garden.

Crazy Quilt Ping Pong Ball Necklace

Crazy Quilt Ping Pong Ball Necklace
By Jennifer Perkins

I have always had a soft spot for crazy quilts, rainbows, and the wardrobe of Punky Brewster. That being the case, I often find myself making larger-than-life jewelry with a hodgepodge effect. The Crazy Quilt Ping Pong Ball Necklace is no exception. Swimming in a fashion sea of subtle charms and chains, a girl like me is often forced to comb the aisles of the sporting goods store and take matters into her own hands.

How-To: Paper Bead Bangle

Paper Bead Bangle
Roll your own beads to make an awesome safety pin bracelet.
By Stephanie Scheetz
I'm a self-proclaimed paper pack rat. Big pieces, little pieces, nothing gets thrown away. One day I sat staring at a huge stack of paper strips, all the same size. They were leftover remnants from a workshop I had prepped months earlier. "What the heck am I going to do with these?" I thought. And the challenge was made, albeit to myself. I needed to design a project that used up these last bits of paper, which others might have thrown away. What resulted was a fresh spin on a craft project familiar to many, but never seen like this.

How-To: Dapping Punch From Steel Bolts

Instructables user cr8ive1 writes:
This is how I make steel doming punches to shape soft metals (gold, silver, copper, brass) for jewellery making. Doming (or dapping punches as they are often referred to by jewellery makers) punches are expensive for what they are- basically highly polished pieces of curved steel. I have a few commercially made punches and a brass dapping block but I needed larger ones for a project. I couldn't justify the expense knowing they would only see occasional use, so I made my own. For this project I've used an old carriage bolt (domed bolt). As I don't have a lathe to remove large amounts of material a piece of preshaped steel was important to reduce the need for labourious hand work (this project is about saving money not losing time).
Hey jewelry makers, how do you improvise your own tools? Post in the comments.

She is going to be showing us Glass Flamework with a Portable Setup! Come meet her in San Mateo on May 30th and 31st and learn how her creations come to be. In her own words, "Flameworking, lampworking, or torchworking glass is an affordable and portable practice for anyone who wants to try hot glass sculpture on a small scale. It's like drawing mid-air with molten glass!" Check out this great video that showcases many of Jenine's pieces. Jenine collaborated with Arley Rose Torsone for Bjork's Innocence video competition. Jenine made the Bjork doll and constructed the sets, as well as flameworked all of the glass components throughout the video.

How-To: Make Kid-Friendly Felted Bead Jewelry
Kleas shares a fun felting project that's totally kid friendly. Her preschool students made these felted bead necklaces and bracelets for Mother's Day gifts, but they would work any time of year. It's a very simple process, and allows the kids to get their hands a little messy, which is always a bonus in my kids' book.
