Join fellow crafters at the Touchstones Art Gallery in Rochdale, UK, for microbe knitting! This event is part of the Manchester Science Festival.

Join us for a day of creativity as we 'knit' micro-organisms such as Swine Flu, Salmonella and the common cold! Find out more about the microbes we encounter in our everyday lives and some of the more uncommon ones. Learn how to knit and add to our growing colonies! This is a drop-in event for all abilities - bring your own knitting kit, but some supplies will be available on the day.

Slash: Paper Under the Knife (warning: autoplay video) is the NYC Museum of Arts and Design's third major exhibition, and if it's anywhere near the quality of Radical Lace and Subversive Knitting or Pricked: Extreme Embroidery, it should be fantastic. One of my favorite book artists, Brian Dettmer, is involved, as well as many many other incredible paper artists.

Slash: Paper Under the Knife takes the pulse of the international art world's renewed interest in paper as a creative medium and source of artistic inspiration, examining the remarkably diverse use of paper in a range of art forms. Slash is the third exhibition in MAD's Materials and Process series, which examines the renaissance of traditional handcraft materials and techniques in contemporary art and design. The exhibition surveys unusual paper treatments, including works that are burned, torn, cut by lasers, and shredded. A section of the exhibition will focus on artists who modify books to transform them into sculpture, while another will highlight the use of cut paper for film and video animations.

Selected artists will be commissioned to create site-specific or site-referential works, and others will be invited to create work onsite in MAD's three artist studios that will subsequently be installed in the exhibition.

Yesterday I visited Spacecraft, a craft studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. They opened just about a year ago and are host to a long list of fun crafty events and activities in the neighborhood. Their menu of walk-in crafts has something for every age and skill level, and they host classes and workshops. They also carry a very wide range of tools and supplies for things like batik, puppetry, felting, embroidery, stamp carving, tie dye, leather working, and I even spotted a few Crafty Chica products on the shelves. They host monthly Church of Craft meetings, make Bags for the People, and even have "Craft on Draft," an adults-only homebrewed beer and crafting session. If you live in Brooklyn, stop on by to check out what's going on, or check out their online events calendar. This Saturday there will be soap making, followed by felting over soap (how convenient)! They'll also be hosting an anniversary/Halloween party on the 31st that is not to be missed. Email to get on their weekly newsletter mailing list, or stop by:

I think it's fairly clear that the craft world is in the midst of a trend. A trend almost as big as bird silhouettes, almost as big as the skull and crossbones, almost as big as the octopus. It's the mustache, and it seems to be, ahem, growing on everyone. From 'Nifer's amazing pieces of nose decor, to the laser cut 'stache necklaces on etsy, nose neighbors and soup strainers are here to stay. And the Petaluma Whiskerino is celebrating with an old school exhibition. I will be at the event on Saturday, starting at 3pm at the Petaluma Farmers Market. I plan to be sporting my own colorful facial hair, and will have my felting supplies so that anyone who likes can join in the fun.

The Annual Bill Soberanes Memorial Whiskerino Contest has been around for longer than anyone I talked to could reckon. I got the details from Fred Abercrombie, who has been competing for the last 5 years. Last year Fred, his wife Melissa, and some of their neighbors created a campaign and took up the task of promotions. Their efforts included some clever material, including handlebar mustache stickers for the mirror, and a postcard that can transform anyone from clean shaven to hirsute in an instant. They've even made chocolate mustache lollipops! As a bonus, this year Fred created a time traveling video, of his face sprouting what I consider to be true art.

I'm proud to announce the opening of Open Source Embroidery, an exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Craft and Folk Art on October 2. It's a great show with lots of crafts intersecting technology, including my LilyPad Embroidery piece. The show has traveled all the way from Sweden and looks truly fabulous. You can check out pictures of what the exhibition looked like at the Bildmuseet in Umeå, or stop by in person when the show opens in SF; I highly recommend it!

I am thrilled to announce that Instructables Build Nights have returned with a vengeance. And our amazing new friends at The reMake Lounge are going to help host them and a host of upcoming Instructables workshops.

We invite one and all to come and bring whatever it is you are working on or would like to swap. If you're not working on anything there will be a YUDU (silkscreen machine) there for people to experiment with and a host of materials and tools like soldering irons and craft supplies. I will also be bringing an Arduino to play around with and would happily give anyone a crash course on how to use one for the upcoming Arduino Contest.

Meet and mingle with local makers. Learn, share, explore and have fun! It will be just like the internet, but in real life!

Bike Rides: The Exhibition is a show celebrating art and bicycles at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, but it's also going to be an all-day event in Ridgefield, Connecticut on October 4th.

The Aldrich will mark the opening of Bike Rides: The Exhibition by hosting Bike Fest—a celebration of all things bicycle from 1 to 5 pm. The festival will feature live bike performances; free Cannondale demos; tune-ups by the Bike Doctor; primp-my-bike contests; prizes; rides; helmet fittings; family activities; an appearance by Yahoo’s Purple Pedals Bike; a Ginger Man cook-out; healthy-snack tents; and MORE throughout the day.

Cyclists are encouraged to join us from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm for Le Tour d'Aldrich—organized bicycle rides for all abilities, which will culminate at the festival.
