A couple of days ago, I posted a flashback to Dev Khan's wire-wrap jewelry DIY from CRAFT Volume 03. Pictured above is a collaborative piece by Dev and Sara K. Woll; Dev wraps the rocks and Sara crafts the necklaces. I just found out that Dev and Sara will be showing their work at the San Francisco Bead and Design Show, which is going on this weekend, November 20th through the 22nd. The show will feature 150 artists, artisans, and suppliers. Their mission is "to reflect the artistic imagination that is intrinsic to traditions of pattern and design in handmade arts such as art couture, bead making, antiquities, fiber art, lapidary, metalwork, ceramics, glass art, handwoven fabrics, art jewelry, fashion design, enameling, fused glass, clay art, designer components, wearable art, textile art, collectibles, and decorative arts." Sounds ornate!

This year's Luv-able and Hug-able show at gallery hanahou in New York City is bound to be a hit! And if you just can't get enough plush, join artist Jenny Harada for a Wee Peppermint Beast plush ornament workshop!

This video of Dia de los Muertos happening in the streets of San Francisco's Mission district, posted by YouTube user documentdocument, is an otherworldly creation. To me, it embodies so many wonderful things about the art and craft of life and death. The participants of the event are an almost overwhelming subject. The face paint transforms the living into the dead, masks identity, and unifies the crowd. The costumes range from quite simple to overly elaborate, and the candles, props, and dance all complete the atmosphere.

The film itself is a spectacular piece of storytelling. Splicing in bridges and tunnels seems like the perfect metaphor for crossing over after death. The impact of this piece is made even more poignant by the way that the musicians and dancers in the parade are visually rendered silent with the musical overlay. We can see the drummer playing, see the horns pass through, watch the accordian bellows open and close, but we can't ever hear a single one of their notes. This helps the film replicate how the memories of the dead can flash in our minds, but never really be heard again.

Here in Austin, we're lucky enough to be able to take classes in person from the uber savvy, Jennifer Perkins. If you aren't lucky enough to make it to Austin, you have a chance to hear her discuss her crafty business advice this Sunday at 6pm CST on Inspired at Home on Blog Talk Radio.

I can't wait for the opening of Over and Under, an embroidered art show curated by Jenny Hart, this weekend here in Austin at Yard Dog Art Gallery. Jenny has been featuring some of the artists' work on her blog, and I'm really looking forward to be able to see it in person. Featured artists include Annie Aube, Deborah Baker, Kate Bingaman Burt, Dana Carlson, Diem Chau, Orly Cogan, Emily Eibel, Veronica Fuentes, Takashi Iwasaki, Joetta Maue, Michael Aaron McAllister, Johnny Murder, Christopher Niver, Jennifer Porter, Shannon Rankin, Richard Saja, Kate Westerholt and Kathie Sever. Slash: Paper Under the Knife (warning: autoplay video) is the NYC Museum of Arts and Design's third major exhibition, and if it's anywhere near the quality of Radical Lace and Subversive Knitting or Pricked: Extreme Embroidery, it should be fantastic. One of my favorite book artists, Brian Dettmer, is involved, as well as many many other incredible paper artists.

Slash: Paper Under the Knife takes the pulse of the international art world's renewed interest in paper as a creative medium and source of artistic inspiration, examining the remarkably diverse use of paper in a range of art forms. Slash is the third exhibition in MAD's Materials and Process series, which examines the renaissance of traditional handcraft materials and techniques in contemporary art and design. The exhibition surveys unusual paper treatments, including works that are burned, torn, cut by lasers, and shredded. A section of the exhibition will focus on artists who modify books to transform them into sculpture, while another will highlight the use of cut paper for film and video animations.

Selected artists will be commissioned to create site-specific or site-referential works, and others will be invited to create work onsite in MAD's three artist studios that will subsequently be installed in the exhibition.

Yesterday I visited Spacecraft, a craft studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. They opened just about a year ago and are host to a long list of fun crafty events and activities in the neighborhood. Their menu of walk-in crafts has something for every age and skill level, and they host classes and workshops. They also carry a very wide range of tools and supplies for things like batik, puppetry, felting, embroidery, stamp carving, tie dye, leather working, and I even spotted a few Crafty Chica products on the shelves. They host monthly Church of Craft meetings, make Bags for the People, and even have "Craft on Draft," an adults-only homebrewed beer and crafting session. If you live in Brooklyn, stop on by to check out what's going on, or check out their online events calendar. This Saturday there will be soap making, followed by felting over soap (how convenient)! Today I've been at the Petaluma Whiskerino, an extraordinary contest of beards and mustaches. I made a few felt mustaches, and had to get my photo taken with the winner in the Full Beard category, Jack Passion. Jack is the author of the Facial Hair Handbook, and as his bear clearly shows, a true expert in the field. He is the first place national champion too! Besides growing beards and writing books, Jack has a website with everything facial hair, and some great silkscreened beard t-shirts.

If you're in the Phoenix area and looking for a place to share your crafts with the holiday market, you're in luck. Indie Chic @ 10th Street on December 5 is gonna be the game in town this year. Application deadline is November 5.

I think it's fairly clear that the craft world is in the midst of a trend. A trend almost as big as bird silhouettes, almost as big as the skull and crossbones, almost as big as the octopus. It's the mustache, and it seems to be, ahem, growing on everyone. From 'Nifer's amazing pieces of nose decor, to the laser cut 'stache necklaces on etsy, nose neighbors and soup strainers are here to stay. And the Petaluma Whiskerino is celebrating with an old school exhibition. I will be at the event on Saturday, starting at 3pm at the Petaluma Farmers Market. I plan to be sporting my own colorful facial hair, and will have my felting supplies so that anyone who likes can join in the fun.

The Annual Bill Soberanes Memorial Whiskerino Contest has been around for longer than anyone I talked to could reckon. I got the details from Fred Abercrombie, who has been competing for the last 5 years. Last year Fred, his wife Melissa, and some of their neighbors created a campaign and took up the task of promotions. Their efforts included some clever material, including handlebar mustache stickers for the mirror, and a postcard that can transform anyone from clean shaven to hirsute in an instant. They've even made chocolate mustache lollipops! As a bonus, this year Fred created a time traveling video, of his face sprouting what I consider to be true art.

More than a dozen New York yarn stores are participating in the first ever NYC Yarn Crawl this weekend in an effort to "encourage exploration of the city's yarn shops and promote the needle arts."

The NYC Yarn Crawl is a free, self-guided tour for knitters, crocheters and other fiber artists to the city's premier yarn shops. Featuring special demonstrations, exhibits, sales and promotions, the crawl promises to be 4 days of shopping, discovery and urban exploration for both local and out-of-town knitters.

Today the Craft and Make teams held it down at the Great Santa Rosa Hand Car Regatta. The scene along the tracks was controlled chaos, with equal parts corsets and mustaches. Hand built mechanical wonders flew down the tracks, drag race style, and my team and car, the Bumpin' Contraption finished 4th!

Les Claypool announced the races. Children ran rampant on the rail road tracks. Costumes were SO inspiring. Musicians and magicians roamed around. It was like traveling through time to the past and the future simultaneously.

Ossu! Shugeibu is a guerilla crafting club from Japan, and they're being hosted by Gallery Hanahou in NYC to hold a show with interactive crafting events.
