An Afternoon of Crafts and 'Staches in Petaluma

Jackpassionbeardwinner.jpg

Today I've been at the Petaluma Whiskerino, an extraordinary contest of beards and mustaches. I made a few felt mustaches, and had to get my photo taken with the winner in the Full Beard category, Jack Passion. Jack is the author of the Facial Hair Handbook, and as his bear clearly shows, a true expert in the field. He is the first place national champion too! Besides growing beards and writing books, Jack has a website with everything facial hair, and some great silkscreened beard t-shirts.

The Petaluma Whiskerino

Flyer_500.jpg

I think it's fairly clear that the craft world is in the midst of a trend. A trend almost as big as bird silhouettes, almost as big as the skull and crossbones, almost as big as the octopus. It's the mustache, and it seems to be, ahem, growing on everyone. From 'Nifer's amazing pieces of nose decor, to the laser cut 'stache necklaces on etsy, nose neighbors and soup strainers are here to stay. And the Petaluma Whiskerino is celebrating with an old school exhibition. I will be at the event on Saturday, starting at 3pm at the Petaluma Farmers Market. I plan to be sporting my own colorful facial hair, and will have my felting supplies so that anyone who likes can join in the fun.

The Annual Bill Soberanes Memorial Whiskerino Contest has been around for longer than anyone I talked to could reckon. I got the details from Fred Abercrombie, who has been competing for the last 5 years. Last year Fred, his wife Melissa, and some of their neighbors created a campaign and took up the task of promotions. Their efforts included some clever material, including handlebar mustache stickers for the mirror, and a postcard that can transform anyone from clean shaven to hirsute in an instant. They've even made chocolate mustache lollipops! As a bonus, this year Fred created a time traveling video, of his face sprouting what I consider to be true art.

First Ever New York City Yarn Crawl Starts Tomorrow

NYC_Yarn_crawl.jpg

More than a dozen New York yarn stores are participating in the first ever NYC Yarn Crawl this weekend in an effort to "encourage exploration of the city's yarn shops and promote the needle arts."

The NYC Yarn Crawl is a free, self-guided tour for knitters, crocheters and other fiber artists to the city's premier yarn shops. Featuring special demonstrations, exhibits, sales and promotions, the crawl promises to be 4 days of shopping, discovery and urban exploration for both local and out-of-town knitters.

You can read more about the participating retailers, scavenger hunt and big basket raffle prizes on the NYC Yarn Crawl Web site. Our Cozy Up To Yarn month sponsors, Lion Brand Yarn, will be participating. You can get a sneak peek at the cozy, yarn-filled Lion Brand Yarn Studio in Nat and Becky's video tour from last month! Live at the Handcar Regatta

handcarregatta_image3.jpg

Today the Craft and Make teams held it down at the Great Santa Rosa Hand Car Regatta. The scene along the tracks was controlled chaos, with equal parts corsets and mustaches. Hand built mechanical wonders flew down the tracks, drag race style, and my team and car, the Bumpin' Contraption finished 4th!

handcarregatta_image4.jpg handcarregatta_imge2.jpg

Les Claypool announced the races. Children ran rampant on the rail road tracks. Costumes were SO inspiring. Musicians and magicians roamed around. It was like traveling through time to the past and the future simultaneously.

handcarregatta_image5.jpg

I'm off to pack up the Make Firetruck. Phew! If you were there, share your images in the Craft Flickr pool!

Open Source Embroidery in San Francisco

osesf.jpg

I'm proud to announce the opening of Open Source Embroidery, an exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Craft and Folk Art on October 2. It's a great show with lots of crafts intersecting technology, including my LilyPad Embroidery piece. The show has traveled all the way from Sweden and looks truly fabulous. You can check out pictures of what the exhibition looked like at the Bildmuseet in Umeå, or stop by in person when the show opens in SF; I highly recommend it!

Instructables Build Night Tonight in San Francisco

instructablesbuildnight.jpg

Randy at Instructables writes:

I am thrilled to announce that Instructables Build Nights have returned with a vengeance. And our amazing new friends at The reMake Lounge are going to help host them and a host of upcoming Instructables workshops.

We invite one and all to come and bring whatever it is you are working on or would like to swap. If you're not working on anything there will be a YUDU (silkscreen machine) there for people to experiment with and a host of materials and tools like soldering irons and craft supplies. I will also be bringing an Arduino to play around with and would happily give anyone a crash course on how to use one for the upcoming Arduino Contest.

Meet and mingle with local makers. Learn, share, explore and have fun! It will be just like the internet, but in real life!

Greenwich House Pottery Celebration Tonight in NYC

GHP-tile-map-detail-1.jpg

dutchceramicsevent.png

If you're in NYC tonight, here's a ceramics event that might interest you:

100 Years of Clay Centennial reception, showcasing some of the world’s most noted ceramic artists, in a celebration of the art, artists, New York City and Greenwich House Pottery as a NYC cultural institution. Plus, the installation of two new exhibits:

Who Lives in Greenwich Village, drawing inspiration from the Mannahatta Project, the installation depicts New York as it was ecologically in 1609, imposed on a block-by-block street grid of Greenwich Village today. The result is a temporal clash (or perhaps synthesis) that educates on ecosystems that still exist, and shows us what has been lost.

New Amsterdam at 400: A Celebration of Dutch Ceramics , celebrating the fourth century mark of Dutch ceramic influence on New York City. As the Dutch Colony of New Amsterdam was established in September 1609, this exhibition uniquely connects Greenwich House Pottery's own anniversary with the cultural heritage of Dutch settlement in New York City.

The event will feature food, drinks, and jazz, and proceeds from the $25 admission go to Greenwich House Pottery.
