San Francisco Zine Fest: August 22 + 23

sfzfposterweb.jpg

If you're in the Bay Area in August and are interested in homemade zines, be sure to put this event on your radar. The annual SF Zine Fest is a "free two-day conference for independent and underground publishing. Exhibitors come from all over the West Coast, and while the focus is on zines, all walks of DIY life are represented — comics, arts and crafts, literary presses, and more." Their special guest this year is Xeric Award-winning cartoonist Andy Hartzell. If you've got something you want to share as an exhibitor, now's the time to get your application in. Everything you need to know is on their site.

Communicrafting Event in Austin

communicrafting_with_jenny_hart.jpg

The Sublime Stitching gang is celebrating the release of Jenny Hart's two most recent titles from Chronicle Books (the Sublime Stitching Bib Kit and the Sublime Stitching Stitchable Stationery Kit) with a special Communicrafting event this Thursday at the Austin Museum of Arts. Jenny Hart will be on hand to sign books and mingle, and a group of local crafters will be on hand sharing quick demos of a variety of crafts. Guests include Kathie Sever of Future Craft Collective, Leslie Bonnell of Stitch Lab and Glitzkrieg, Diane Barney and Mary Macaulay from Austin Fiber Artists and, yours truly, Rachel Hobson from Craftzine.com and Average Jane Crafter. I love that Jenny and the Sublime Stitching gang have turned the release celebration into a full-on community crafting event with fun and learning. It doesn't get much better than that. The event is free, and there will be snacks and drinks provided. Be sure to pop by the Facebook event page to RSVP and get more information. If you are going to be there, leave a comment and let me know so we can meet up!

Common Sense Knitting and Crochet Exhibit in Austin

testsite_exhibit.jpg

Austin artspace, testsite, has recently opened up an interactive exhibit with Brooklyn-based artist, Sheila Pepe. Pepe is known for her intense crochet-based installations, and Common Sense follows suit.

In the rooms of testsite, Pepe will install massive networks of crocheted yarn- skeins of yarn available for constructive re-use by testsite's visitors. Throughout the exhibition's duration, visitors are "encouraged to become interpreters, collaborators, to sit down and literally unravel Pepe's crochet stitches, and then use the same yarn to knit items for personal or domestic use, i.e. scarves, hats, socks, mittens, slippers, purses, cosies, potholders, etc. This collaborative effort removes art from a solitary, hermetic experience to one that is social, communal, and interactive--a renewal of old-fashioned notions of togetherness that are being embraced by current generations." Over time, during open hours as well as a variety of workshops, participants will dismantle Pepe's installation and creatively repurpose its materials towards practical ends.

As the installation physically deteriorates over the course of time, traces of its presence will remain: wall drawings from Pepe's ongoing Doppleganger series, created by the artist in collaboration with Dunbar. These sketches, "made according to a sequential method of intuitive object making, shadow casting, and interpretive drawing," create a playful, impractical counterpoint to the more utilitarian function of the dismantled and repurposed yarn.

There are several workshops going on throughout the month-long exhibit, including weekly open knitting instruction. Jenny Hart, artist and founder of Sublime Stitching, will be speaking at the exhibit this weekend on the subject of the role of functional media as art. For more information and a complete schedule of related events, see the testsite website.

Thermochromatic Embroidery Workshop This Weekend

thermochromaticworkshop.jpg

If you're in Brooklyn this weekend, you may be able to attend this Thermochromatic Embroidery Workshop being offered at 3rd Ward tomorrow.

Take embroidery to the next level! In this class we will make a simple hat and embroider a design on it that is interactive. I’ll teach you how to use thermochromic ink that, when wired up correctly, changes color with the flick of a switch on your hat. You must have basic hand sewing skills or at least some manual dexterity. A basic concept of electronics is helpful, but a willingness to follow directions would suffice.

Open Source Embroidery Exhibition in Sweden

SANY0027.JPG

I'm proud to announce an upcoming exhibition, Open Source Embroidery:

Open Source Embroidery is a major exhibition of new work and commissions at BildMuseet in Sweden and Museum of Craft and Folk Art in San Francisco, USA.

The Open Source Embroidery exhibition presents contemporary artwork which uses embroidery and code as a tool to investigate participatory production and distribution methods. The project explores how the open source software development model has been incorporated into the language of cultural participation, involving interdisciplinary approaches to skill-share and collaboration. The exhibition includes material and digital works that make visible the physical characteristics of technology and social communications networks.

The Open Source Embroidery exhibition brings together individual and collectively made artworks by artists, crafts people, makers, computer programmers and html users which explore the relationship between craft and code, physical and digital space. The artworks experiment with interdisciplinary approaches to modifying patterns, the DIY culture of hacking and sampling in sound, GPS and mobile technologies.

The exhibition brings together several international artists, and I'm excited to be one of them!

Kinetic Grand Championship

extremecrafthippocart.jpg

Garth Johnson recently got to attend the Kinetic Grand Championship, a human-powered art vehicle race across road, land, and water between Arcata and Ferndale, California. He took a lot of nice video and included some anecdotes of the more eccentric aspects of the competition over at Extreme Craft.

Jell-O mold competition

Jello-omoldcompetition.jpg

The Gowanus Studio Space is holding a contest for the best Jell-O Mold:

Jell-O is the perfect medium for design in these times of restraint given its versatility, economy, and availability. This is why it’s time for a comeback of the Jell-O proportions of old: soaring heights, strange colors, object suspension!

The Gowanus Studio Space’s Jell-O Mold Competition will pit designers against each other in an effort to make the Jell-O mold cool again. Competitors will battle it out for mold supremacy in the following categories:

  • Creativity
  • Aesthetics
  • Structural/sculptural ingenuity
  • Edibility/culinary appeal
  • Best use and showcase of Jell-O

A crack panel of respected judges will announce the winners at 8pm on the day of the event. The judging and awards ceremony will be held at the Gowanus Studio Space in Brooklyn.

The deadline for entries is June 12, with a registration fee of $15/$10 for students.

Stitch N' Pitch at the Baseball Hall of Fame Museum

3478966128 5Efe511425
As a part of Youth Baseball Week, The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum hosted a Stitch N' Pitch event a few weeks ago on April 19th. About 150-170 people stop by for lessons on either needlepoint or crochet. Libby Butler-Gluck of TNNA and Stitch N' Pitch remarked that interestingly enough, most wanted a needlepoint lesson. Kids and parents needlepoint a baseball bookmark and if they choose crochet they got to make wrist warmers. Check out more photos in the flickr set. Pictured above is my friend, knitting hero, and SF Giants Stitch N' Pitch coordinator, Barbara Paley teaching a young girl how to crochet.
