Fun animal crochet hats by Nazli
Nazli makes the cutest crochet hats to the likes of owls and frogs. The owl hat, as worn by her brother, even looks like a pilot's hat when it's on. You can visit Nazli every weekend from 1-6pm on Prince and Wooster St. in NY where she sells her hats.
Nazli says, "Having learned knitting and crocheting from my grandma, I've been doing it for a long time now. I never follow a pattern and just go with the flow. What made me inspired making these hats was the fun of childhood and creating a hat which can also be a toy when it's not worn. Putting eyes and a mouth on them gives them a character and eventually the hat becomes more than a hat: a friend. The way to make these hat is just you start a circle and double crochet around it increasing, and then when you have the exact circumference of your head, just decrease a little bit and that's it!" A Closer Look: Thanksgiving Etsy - Autumn Crochet Pattern Set
Autumn Crochet Pattern Set by Purl (Amy Gaines)
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=5015712
By Arwen O'Reilly
Purl's fabulous autumn crochet patterns put a smile right on my face (I love the turkey, and I really love the pumpkin pie with whipped cream on top!) and get my fingers twitching to make. The pattern works in a simple spiral, so you don't even have to be expert to bring the best offering at the Thanksgiving table. Purl has a whole host of other great patterns (seasonal and otherwise), so be sure to check out her Etsy shop.
Arwen: How did you get involved with crafting?
Amy: I have been crafting all of my life. As a child, I loved cutting paper. To the torment of my mother, I collected papers, cut them into all sorts of tiny shapes and filled many shoeboxes with my confetti. As I got older, I was more interested in drawing and sewing. But a couple of years ago, my sister-in-law taught me to knit, and I was hooked. I enjoy knitting and crocheting because I understand it. I was never very good at sewing; I relied on patterns, and never felt inspired to create my own designs. However with knitting and crochet, I hardly ever sit down to make something with someone else's patterns; to me it's just easier to make it up as I go.
Arwen: How do you feel about Thanksgiving?
Amy: My father is Cherokee and Comanche Indian, so in our house we celebrate Thanksgiving in our own way. Thanksgiving to me is the time to gather with those that you love, and celebrate our love for one another. I have such a diverse family, and this is the time to appreciate our differences and be thankful and celebrate those differences.
Arwen: What inspires you?
Amy: I am inspired by my daughter. She is five and has such a vast imagination and confidence. She draws the most amazing characters that I only wish I could create.
Arwen: Do you have a tip for other crafters?
Amy: One tip I would give to other crafters is do what makes you happy and gives you joy, even if you are the only person in your life that can appreciate it. There is nothing more rewarding then to turn nothing into something and enjoy every step of the way.

Crochet Art - Friends for Life
Steven Leyden Cochrane shares with us some of the cool crochet sculptures he's been working on. Steven says, "These are some sculptures that I've been making, recently (part of a series called "Friends for Life"). I started by crocheting stuffed birds with cotton yarn, to which I applied a couple dozen layers of chalk ground (powdered marble mixed with hide glue) and then sanded. When that was done, I used egg tempera (raw pigment mixed with egg yolk) to repaint the birds' faces onto the now-white forms. Anyway, if that didn't make much sense, there's also a flickr set detailing the process . Some of the other work on my site might be of interest, also, as I use craft media pretty often." Link.
