Valero Doval's Aerofauna
Put a bird on it? Or ... Make it a bird! I've been having a lot of fun today looking through the portfolio of Spanish artist Valero Doval, whose Aerofauna make my imagination take flight. [via Grain Edit]
Geometric Color Inspiration from Andy Gilmore
In high school I used to steal large sheets of grid paper from the drafting room flat files and spend hours, if not weeks, meticulously coloring in each square with a seemingly random selection of colors. It was like therapy. So you can imagine my delight when this turned up in my inbox. Geometric color grid explosion!
Andy Gilmore is a New York illustrator and designer whose impressive client list includes Wired, Fast Company, and the New York Times. More images after the jump ...
Read full story »Shane Waltener: Lace Webs
Many moons ago I found the above image in a Tumblr feed without any luck of locating the artist. Finally, Lovely Textiles has the answer: London artist Shane Waltener! This piece, Auntie Peggy Has Departed, is a great example of his body of work, utilizing lace doilies and audio as part of an installation focused on memory, place, and craft. Apart from these crocheted web installations, Waltener also takes photographs and makes sculpture.
Doilies are like dreamcatchers, each knot holding a thought, a memory. The sum of these make up the history of a place ... The piece was dedicated to Peggy, and her lifelong enthusiasm for the crochet work and needlecraft.
Duchamp Urinal Dress
For a mere $2,607 you too could be a walking work of couture art with ... yes, this happened ... The Urinal Dress, inspired by Duchamp's famous 1917 readymade, Fountain. London designer Philip Colbert created the dress as part of his Venus in Sequins collection, which also includes inspiration from Pop notables such as Warhol and Lichtenstein. And before you go eye-rolling over such outré fashion, consider that each dress is hand crafted with over 3 weeks of sequin and embroidery work. Whoa. Craft on, brother. And be sure to give Leslie Hall a shout next time you're stateside. [via Laughing Squid]
Zoe Keating, Avant Cellist
Here's a beautiful look into the artistic life and creative process of so-called avant cellist, Zoë Keating. This is my favorite interview of Intel's Visual Life series, a surprisingly wonderful campaign for a corporate entity. I encourage you to check out the other videos.
When people say, "What do you do?" I find it a really difficult question. Because, well yeah I play the cello, and I use technology, but that's just sort of this thing that happens on the surface. Really I'm creating a world. And it's really hard to say what it is. But it is a world of feeling, and motion, and color and light. And I think you can't actually describe it with words. That's why it's music.
Christian Schallert's LEGO-Style Home
I've been into tiny houses for years now (after all, I live in a bus). But when I saw Christian Schallert's remodeled Barcelona pigeon loft, my mouth hit the floor. Driven by practicality, but without compromising on aesthetics, these 258 square feet have all the creature comforts of a larger home ... folded neatly away in the walls.
To use a piece of furniture, Schallert must first click on one of his many spring-loaded panels and -- voilà! -- the kitchen, table, or wardrobe is revealed. His bed rolls out from under the balcony stairs, and the shower is a glass box tucked neatly in the corner. In a small space, everything is within reach. And best of all, cleanliness is only a closed door away.
"At the end of the day, what do you need for living? You need a nice comfortable mattress, nice clean sheets, running water, a shower, and a stove to cook something ... You don't much more stuff."

Neon Boneyard
Gone are the glory days of elaborate, angled neon blazing in the desert. But thanks to The Neon Museum in downtown Las Vegas, visitors can experience some of Sin City's retired retro glitz, up close and personal. The 2 acre Boneyard boasts over 150 donated and rescued signs, ranging in period from the late 1930s to the early 1990s. Typophiles and neon junkies rejoice!
These amazing photos come from idsgn, and were taken on September 25 using a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi. You can see the full set here. More photos after the jump ...

In honor of Design & Photography month, I thought I'd share a wonderful user-contributed photoblog, Dear Photograph. The idea is simple -- "take a picture of a picture from the past in the present". Ha! OK, that may sound complicated, but it's easy to see what 22-year-old DP creator, Taylor Jones, is talking about. [See also the work of Ken Josephson for what could be considered a seed to this concept.]
In the Make, with Alison Kendall
Get a behind-the-scenes peek into the studio lives of Bay Area artists and designers! In the Make is a collaboration between photographer Klea McKenna and writer Nikki Grattan who -- you guessed it! -- pair photo essays with interviews to bring you a down-to-earth look at some serious talent.
I'm especially excited to share their visit with MAKE and CRAFT's very own Alison Kendall who, when not freelancing as an illustrator and designer, spends most of the week in her gorgeously curated studio. I love how Ali's marine ecology roots are evidenced in everything from her library to collage work. More studio photos after the jump!
