Velvet Bristlebot Racing Snail

Lenore at Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories writes:
A few weeks ago we showed you how to build a BristleBot, a tiny vibrating robot (vibrobot) that is formed from the unlikely union of a toothbrush (with directional bristles) and a vibrating pager motor. Despite its simplicity, it drives like a drunken bat out of hell-- propelled by the ratcheting action of the vibrated bristles. Of course, toothbrushes aren't the only system where you can find find oriented bristles. Approaching this process from an entirely different perspective, it turns out that certain types of velvet can also form a directional bristle system that can be driven with vibrations. Here we build a plush racing snail-- a velvet vibrobot that crawls forward... at a snails pace.
Wow, I had no idea some velvet had this property! Lenore, you've got yourself a race. - Link.

From the CRAFT Flickr pool comes Cafe Fernando's beaded robot plush. I love the mix of rough-looking wool fabric (which came from IKEA pillows) and shiny semi-precious beads from Grand Bazaar Istanbul). Such great detail work! More pix at the source. Link.

Mr. Funky Bear Class

Mr. Funky creator Narumi Ogawa will be teaching a crochet class at The Little Knittery in Atwater Village on Sunday, February 3, from 3-6pm. Students will learn to make their own super cute bear like this one--Narumi is even providing the plastic eyes and nose. Narumi has given me crochet lessons before (here's a link to my very first-ever amigurumi project, made with her help) so I can personally guarantee she's a great teacher. Don't miss it! Link.
