Call For Knitted Sweaters For Penguins Affected by Oil Spill

penguin_sweaters.jpeg

**UPDATE**
Good news! The penguins are all set, and no more knit jumpers are needed at this time. @AmykNitZ on Twitter shared this link and let us know that the penguins have more than enough sweaters. Instead, check out some of the other many knitting, crochet and sewing charities that are going on this winter, like the Mitten Commitment (via @SisterDiane)

If you thought the hens in jumpers were adorable, prepare to pass out from cuteness with these penguins in sweaters. A New Zealand yarn store is calling for knitters to whip out their needles in an effort to provide sweater vests to penguins affected by an oil spill.

As you may be aware the oil spill & potential disastrous effects to wildlife & environment off the coast of Tauranga is frightening. A small number of little blue penguins have already been caught in the oil spilled to date with growing fears that more will be effected. Skeinz has been asked to help with the penguin relief by knitting small Penguin PJ's to help protect the birds & prevent them from preening their feather & ingesting the toxic oil.

You can find the pattern for the sweaters and shipping information on the Skeinz web site.

It *is* true, but they are no longer in need of sweaters! Instead, turn that generous heart to some other deserving charities. We'll have a roundup of some shortly, but I've added one in the update to this post above. Thanks! :)

I went onto the Skeinz website ... the pattern indeed is there and seems fairly quick and easy to do (a little figuring out since things are in metric though); however the address to ship the finished product to is vague. I sent a request to the Skeinz website for the address and if I hear back from them, I'll post it here. Good luck, all you knitters! Cute cause!

Ok, I admit it: I clicked the link just to see why a penguin would need a woolen sweater. But wouldn't wearing a sweater make it hard for him to swim?

Count me in :) Just need the pattern. Probably, like all handcrafters, I have 1/2 garage full of yard that I'm going to knit up one of these days.
