Craft Spaces: Andrea DeHart

CRAFT: Make Space for Crafting

Andrea DeHart is a busy craft mom of two. When she's not contributing projects to CRAFT such as today's custom silloutte card project, she's busy working away on projects for her own site, Crafty Bitch. Most of you have mentioned the need for creative storage solutions so Andrea was nice enough to snap some pics and tell us about how she keeps all of her craft goods together.

CRAFT: With all the sewing and various craft projects you have going on, how do you keep it all organized?

Andrea: As a child, the top shelf of my closet was always designated to my mother's fabric stash. In fact, most of the closets in our house had a shelf designated for her sewing supplies. Now that I'm a mother of two, I can completely relate. My once "sewing studio" became the kid's room and I was forced to find empty shelves around our house for my supplies. Here are a few of those storage solutions.

Andrea: Three things I love about this multi-drawer unit from Ikea: it's small enough to fit behind a door, it's clean and modern, and it's very affordable. The drawers store all of my threads, pins, scissors, trim, and any other tools that I need on hand when I'm sewing.

Craft Closet
Most San Francisco dwellings have ridiculously small closet spaces in which you cannot store much in the way of clothing. My husband installed shelves in this space in our laundry room. The clear tubs and drawers stack neatly and I labeled each for easy identification. There's even room for my craft books, magazines and supplies, all discretely tucked behind a striped curtain.

On the Go
While attending fashion design school, I wanted an alternative to the plastic multi-compartment toolbox. I came across this vintage vanity case which perfectly stores all of my tools and basic sewing supplies on the go. Not only is it incredibly durable, but the top tray removes providing ample storage for larger items underneath.

I took a quick peek at Ikea's website and didn't see it there. I'll have to check to see if I still have the product brochure to find out it's name if you want to try to find one used. They're really great!

Do you remember the name of the multi-drawer unit from Ikea. I looked on there site an couldn't find it. May be they no longer have them.
