Book Review, Giveaway + Project: The Sewing Bible By Ruth Singer

Header Book Sewingbible

The Sewing Bible By Ruth Singer

If you are a crafter who loves to sew or are just starting out this book, The Sewing Bible: A Modern Manual of Practical and Decorative Sewing Techniques by Ruth Singer must be in your crafting library! This hard cover book is like a modern sewing encyclopedia with detailed step-by-step instructions and accompanying photos on techniques for hand and machine sewing. The techniques covered in the book are really extensive such as pin tucks, smocking, hems, adding snaps, princess seams, frills and ruffles, quilting, and embroidery. The close-up photos are great and guide you even better on all the steps. Masterclass techniques, such as mitered corners, help refine your sewing skills. The machine-sewing ones are particularly helpful for me personally as I always need to know if I'm using the right presser foot or not. This book is a sewing companion at it's finest!

Sewingbible Projects1
The Sewing Bible also comes with 20 beautiful sewing projects. I love the Circular Skirt (p.270), Book Bag (p. 111), and Gathered Scarf (p.220) that can be worn in a variety of ways.

Book Giveaway Time!
Three lucky CRAFT readers will each receive a copy of The Sewing Bible. Please make sure you include your email address in the comment form field (won't be published). All comments will be closed by Noon PST on Monday, November 23rd. The lucky winners will be announced later on the site. Good luck!

This book could save Christmas!

I've decided it would be great to make matching nightgowns for my daughter and her doll for Christmas, but I'm not quite sure how to go about it. This book sure would come in handy! Who knows what other holiday projects I could tackle, time permitting. Thanks for considering me as your winner.

Is the gingham shirt in the book too? I'm guessing not, but it's PERFECT! Well, the book looks pretty good, I've been thinking I need something like this to help me improve my skills to where I'm happy about the things I make as garments, not just fun crafts.

What a gorgeous looking book! I love sewing and I've been looking for a proper sewing reference/bible book for an eternity. It's hard to find something that's not too old fashioned and frippy. This looks like the right book AND it has got 20 projects...perfect!!! Currently lying on the sofa at home with the swine flu - bored out of my sense, not allowed to touch anything (except my trusty little computer) and a mask covering half my face...I could sure use a little "pick me up" ;)

The Sewing Bible

This book would be so helpful! My main sewing guru (my Mom) is many timezones away and usually it's to late to call when I need sewing advice.

The apron will be an neat (hopefully quick?) project for this weekend.

Sewing Bible

This book would be wonderful.

It would be nice to have a reference near by to help me understand what the words in pattern instructions mean. My usual source of guidance, my Mom, is many timezones away and not that savvy with e-mail.

The apron pattern is timely. It think I will be trying to make it this weekend so I can wear it on Thanksgiving.

THE Book!!!

OMG, this is the book I've been looking for since I started sewing! I am not that well off financially, yet, and there aren't many people around me who sew, and those that do aren't as willing to take the time to teach me technique, so everything I've acquired skill-wise is all self taught, so this book would work WONDERS in boosting my Seamstress's homeschooling education!!!

Hope I get it, if not, I'll find a way to buy it!

Z

Luck and love to everyone !

Singer!

It's pretty awesome the author's last name is Singer for a book about sewing. I've been using my mother's Singer sewing machine that she's had since I was a baby (around 1987). I'm super interested in the little sewing tricks of the trade because I'm trying to acquire skills. So far I've made two dresses and some curtains. The bracelet on the cover looks amazing!

Posted by: Emily Dawn on November 19, 2009 at 10:08 PM

Man, this book would be great. I'm pretty new at this and usually just make it up as I go along. I'm also really intimidated by patterns, so I bet this book would help that a lot too!

sewing on an old machine

I have been looking for a book to show me techniques and patterns for sewing. My step-mother gave me her old machine, from the 1960s, and I really want to get started.

Posted by: Stacy on November 19, 2009 at 9:12 PM

Love it! I mostly learned to sew from my mom, so a go-to manual would be fabulous.

Posted by: Judith on November 19, 2009 at 9:09 PM

That would make a perfect "Happy Christmas to me"! I'm forever inventing projects only to find halfway through that I have to learn a whole new skill to finish them . . . and of course I have to look five different places to get a decent tutorial every time! (Not to mention it'd make my husband ecstatic if I could use up my trunk of material!) Pick me! :)

It now lives in poly zip-bag... and loses a little more cohesion every time I use it. I could really use a book from this century... Thanks!

Please please pick me! In the last year, I've inherited a machine from my mother, who died after a long-term illness, only to find out that after it had been in storage while she was sick, it had rusted & dusted beyond practicable repair. I traded it in on a nice machine - that was stolen a handful of months later. I finally have another new machine. Now I just need to make some time to learn how to use the danged thing! This book sounds like it would be an enormously helpful resource.

That book is what I need.
although if I had it, I wouldn't be calling my mom in the middle of a project at 10pm with silly questions like "what a selvege?" and that might be sad.

that apron is sooo cute.

I want to learn to sew!

I just got a sewing machine! Which is a little bit dangerous, as I don't know what I'm doing, but I'm so excited about what I'm making that I decide, "Hey, this looks pretty good, maybe I'll wear it out tonight". And then, two hours later, my fabulous new skirt is unraveling all over the party, and I end the evening in a bath towel sarong.

So yes, I'd love to have this book.

I love to sew!

I've been trying to teach myself how to sew, after attempting to take a class at my college and dropping it because the teacher was terrible. I'd love a book that could give me clear and concise directions on how to sew apparel and other things. This book looks like an excellent resource and I would love to have it in my arsenal.

Oh, I could use that sort of books! Sounds like a perfect book to have on hand as my daughter and I teach each other/ourselves more than just sewing rectangles.

Thank you so much for doing these book highlights - without a local bookstore, I really have no chance to browse new books.
