Book Review & Giveaway: Bend the Rules with Fabric

Header Bendtherules Fabric
Book Bendtherulesfabric

Believe me, you have no idea how excited I was to receive Amy Karol's second book, Bend the Rules with Fabric. Amy shows you how to personalize your fabric with stencils, stamps, dye, photo transfers, silk screening, and more. There are a great variety of projects for all different levels, including 9 no-sew projects for those that have yet to take the leap. A few of my favorites (pictured below) are the Painted Toile, the Lunch Bag where you print your own fabric, and the Aunt Sarah and Uncle Pete Dolls (how hilarious and fun!). Templates and patterns for the project are in the back of the book. In addition to projects, Amy also goes in depth on techniques. I love these as they are peppered in between projects. They are things that I've always wanted to try out such as printing images on fabric sheets, using Bubble Jet Set to make your own, or screen printing with Photoez, just to name a few. Amy includes a short bullet-list of benefits as well as drawbacks to each technique, so you can keep them in mind as you test them out. I could honestly stare at the pretty project photos all day. This is definitely a book for your craft collection!

I love finding great new things to make with the often large scraps of fabric I accumulate at work where I make draperies professionally. This book looks perfect for that!

Amy is amazing!

I loved her first book and am looking forward to adding this one to my craft bookcase as well...

Pick Me!

The reason I want the labels is that I can't get them at my local bookstore.:-( I called them this afternoon and asked them to special order, but they say that it's showing "out of stock." So sad! So please, please, please pick me!

Please!

I would LOVE to have this book and wonderous set! I've many times wandered into a book shop and gazed at it and wished!
However, I am a rediculously poor textile crafts student and all my money goes on food/accomodation/of course art and craft materials! So it's a distant dream to own this gorgeous book!
I'm also starting a stitch and bitch society for my uni, and so if I was given this fabulous set of things I could share them with my fellow poor crafty students!

Poor girl seeks printing love

Golly! There are so many reasons why this book would be a perfect fit with me....

- I am poor. Yes, folks, I fall under that $16,000 a year bracket EASY!
- I follow Amy quite closely and love so much of what she does: her blog, her sweet photos and patterns and I managed to get her first book which I have used many, many times. I tried to get this book in a contest she had on her blog, but... so close, yet so far.
- I am a bit of a hoarder. My father came out of the depression and taught me all he knows. But this can be good because I know how to stretch a dollar and how to make my own gifts.
- The holidays and birthdays fill the next four months for me. I am really hoping to do almost all homemade gifts with little or no supply shopping. This book would help me to use the supplies I already have to make my friends and family happy.

You gotta love being happy!
Thanks!

Craftster Overseas

I've recently moved to Munich with my hubby and while it's super fun to wait for job interview requests or rejections, and talk to my cat all day, I NEED some creative, fabric diversions. Maybe you will take pity on me? :-) Looks like a fantastic book in any case!

I will go mad!!!

I cant afford to buy this book right now and I will go mad if I don't have it, the projects seem amazing, I cant keep my hands still, I'm always ready to learn new techniques and make new things, plus the gift labels will come in handy seeing how I'm always making gifts for friends and family just because I don't have room to keep all the things I make. Please help me keep my sanity!! I need this book!!!

inspiration

I taught myself how to sew when I was a little kid, with starter help from my mom. That moment when you figure out a technique on your own is such an amazing feeling! I love to see how other people work, and this book looks like a very interesting one :)

I could use the help...

I tried to make a doll for my daughter with her face on it, and it was... well ... lets just say it.. pathetic, but my sewing skills are increasing and I'm less sleep deprived now, I'd love another try at it... please bless me with this book. With sugar on top.

My friend and I just saw this book on display at a local bookstore. We spent most of our time there looking through the pages. My friend was especially enamored with the cute card holder/wallet and I liked the iron-on face dolls. I would love to be able to give this book to my friend to help her through her lately stressful work situation.

Golly!

I've been reading Amy's blog for over a year now. She is such an inspiration, and she has such a way with words that makes me want to try so many new things (like making my own yogurt or butter or mayonnaise!). The way she explains how to do her projects just clicks with me, where other books, how-to's or tutorials have failed. I've always wanted to silk screen or use stencils, but I've never had the guts to try. I'd love to have Amy's book to help me take that first step. Amy helped me take my first step with sewing, so it'd be great to have her there for embarking on any new crafting endeavors I have in the future too!

On August 20, 2009, my new YA fantasy novel, Gateway to DreamWorld was released.

Synopsis: On their way home from baseball tryouts, Brad Colby and his two sons are involved in a terrible car accident that leaves six-year-old Pete in a coma. When Pete awakens, the family is crushed to learn that he is paralyzed.

Meanwhile, Pete’s eight-year-old brother, Jason, has been having powerful dreams that lead him to a mysterious realm known as DreamWorld. Jason discovers that all of his desires can come true in DreamWorld, but the time is fast approaching when he will have to choose between his two worlds.

And when more devastating news strikes at the heart of the Colby family, Jason and Pete set out on a desperate attempt to find the Gateway to DreamWorld and save their family. totally want this

I love reading Amy's blog and want to learn how to make cool fabrics, since really cool fabrics cost so much. My library doesn't carry Amy Karol's books, so I'd like to win one for myself. I'm pretty new at sewing, so any help to not look too grandma-ish would be useful.

Posted by: lee on September 3, 2009 at 11:44 AM

because there is always so much to learn and be inspired by - and from the previous comments this would be a good good book

Who wouldn't want a copy of Amy Karol's latest book? Everything she does is fabulous! Please put me in the running!

Posted by: Tricia on September 3, 2009 at 11:15 AM

Why I want this book

... because I loved her first book so much!

Posted by: qrious on September 3, 2009 at 11:10 AM

Because I'm a stickler for rules and need some serious guidance on crafting outside the box.

Posted by: Gretchen on September 3, 2009 at 11:02 AM

Wow!!!

I was recently at a book store and saw this book on the shelf, so I started to look at it. Unfortunately there was a guy next to me who I guess didn't want me in the same aisle as him. He started coughing loudly (not covering his mouth) and making all sorts of loud, gross, phlegm noises. Needless to say I put this book down and quickly left the aisle, defeated by the phlegm guy!! What I did get to see of the book I really liked though and would like the chance to read it without any more rude interruptions!!!

Posted by: ggb on September 3, 2009 at 10:52 AM

Holy Cow! Since I adore Amy Karol, I would LOVE to recieve anything from her. I discovered the Angry Chicken while searching for embroidery and sewing sites. I really like the way she presents information so informally and easiliy. It makes me want to sew more. And her video tutorials help ALOT!!!! So, yes, please, I would like a copy of her Bend the Rules with Fabric book.

My parents would definitely appreciate some cool gifts too and deserve them after such an awesome gift (and 23 years of me, haha!).

ideas. I dug out my 35 year old Elna that was state of the art many years ago and am ready to play! I have been selling my crafts so I don't have to go back to a 9-5 job.. and besides my birthday is coming up so what a great gift. Keep up the great works.

amy karol!

I read Amy's blog regularly... and I adore it. I knew I would love this book from the first time she mentioned it! I love all of her little projects. Either way, if I don't win it here I will probably go out and buy it anyway :)

I Heart Craft

I would love this book. Although an avid crafter in many ways, I kinda fumble around when it comes to making things with fabric. I'd love some direction and ideas.

This is a thoughtful giveaway!

I've just recently started trying my hand at fabric embellishment, and I'm looking for technique tips and inspiration. Sure looks like this book would fill the bill. Keeping my fingers crossed, and thanks! Nancy

Wow!

I have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of Amy's new book! I would love to have it! She is so full of great ideas and inspiration. I am especially interested in printing images on fabric sheets as I have been wanting to make something for my grandmother using a photo of her and my grandfather when they were first married. I can't wait to see and try some of her projects!

Posted by: ~Heather on September 3, 2009 at 7:28 AM

I would love to take on some of these really cool and do-able projects.

Of course, this is going on the assumption that the Time Gods will suddenly open up their Magical Pocket Watch and give me an extra 3-5 hours a week when all I have to do is amuse myself with fabric, rather than be at my job, do laundry or catch up on sleep. (Otherwise, this book might only be removed from my shelf when my kids pull it down to tell me everything in it that they want me to make for them. Sorry, I had to be honest there.) ~H

I <3 angry chicken

And I hear she's not angry at all. ;) I love gleaning ideas from Amy's fabulous blog, but nothing compares to the convenience, inspiration, and beauty of a lovely, papery, printed book. Thanks so much for another delightful giveaway.

EEEP!

I'm simply obsessed with screen printing and designing my own prints. Any new or easier techniques would be quite welcome! I'm also a sucker for a good layout and those tags are adorable. I'd probably jump around and look like a crazy person if I got a free book, but I'm willing to sacrifice my dignity in the name of fabric :)

Don't Like Rules!

I'd love to have this book because i've never been one who likes to follow the rules. I like to think outside the box and come up with things that are totally different. I have a Girl Scout troop and I'd love to be able to share this info with them so that sewing could be seen as "cool".

Posted by: Hilde on September 3, 2009 at 5:56 AM

The book looks absolutely wonderful! I'd love to win it, as I have just got my own place and will finally have the space to really get crafty! But I still need to do an awful lot in my home before I can move in. This book would help me stay positive (I hope) and dream about how it's going to be.

This is exciting. I love learning new crafts. I bought my first sewing machine for christmas 2 years ago and have done quite a few small gifts for people, but I'm running out of new and fun ideas. This book would be perfect.

Hi!
My father have just given me a Singer Serenade. :D Now I just need to learn how to use it.
Because I already enjoy crafting, by working with that mant techniques would be even more encouraging for a first try.
I studied how the machine works and I just need some ideas.

Thank you for this opportunity.

I'm into texturizing fabric at the moment and the printing techniques have everyting I need all in one book. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book and expect the same with the new book! And hopefully #3 will be in the works soon!

stitching as I see fit.
Needles will stick, quilts thin and thick,

With your gift, my art will lift,
closer to perfect.

Posted by: Pippa on September 3, 2009 at 12:10 AM

I love Amy Karol! I follow her blog and have wanted her books ever since I saw them. Last year I taught myself to sew enough to make sock creatures, but now I have made my first ever cushion cover, I'm ready to dive into the world of textiles! The didn't teach textiles at my school, which I was gutted about because I always think it would have been my favourite subject. This book would make my year!

Posted by: Aveen on September 3, 2009 at 12:01 AM

I'm so excited that Amy has a new book out! I loved her last one so much, I was slightly obsessed with it for a while and made almost all the projects. I've just had to give up my job as we are moving halfway across the country to start a brand new life away from the city, and until I get a new job there's no money for books or other nice things, so I'd be overjoyed to win a copy :)

Posted by: Kate on September 2, 2009 at 8:30 PM

Eeek! I definitely need that book. I'm trying to get better at sewing etc but I'm coming at it from the wrong end - my mum taught me enough that I know the basics, but I don't know enough to not be intimidated by commercial patterns.

Plus, I find the best way to learn the rules from behind them, anyway! :)

I love Amy's first book (just found it at the library a few weeks ago) and then I found out about this one! As someone who loves to collect fabric, but sometimes feel unsure of what to do with it beyond the project it was intended for, this seems like the perfect book for me! Would love to win one of Amy's books plus those gift tags ROCK!

Posted by: sarahbeth on September 2, 2009 at 8:20 PM

I would love to win this book because I absolutely adore Amy's first book and cannot wait to be inspired and get crafty again. Her Bend the Rules book helped me get over my fear of messing things up when using the sewing machine, a fear that kept me from sewing anything but straight(ish) lines....and even that rarely happened. Now I looooove to sew on the sewing machine and make clothes and presents galore!!!!

While this book might not help me pay for college, it might help me a little bit if I won it! (So I won't have to go buy it, ha ha.) It looks like a veritable fountain of ideas would really help stimulate my own creativity again.

Posted by: Amandah on September 2, 2009 at 5:56 PM

Awesome!

Hello!
I'm a textile and art & design major at nc state university.
I am also the president of a fiber's club and am always looking for new projects and techniques to share during meetings, this book will be very helpful!
My roommate (and fellow crafter) and I collect all kinds of craft books that we share with our design classmates and friends.

Posted by: Jeni on September 2, 2009 at 5:55 PM

Awesome. I'd love this book because I've wanted to get into dyeing/stenciling but have been too intimidated and I know Amy will make it approachable. Woo!

Posted by: patitapirata on September 2, 2009 at 5:53 PM

So many reasons to want this book! Her first book was excellent, and I'm at the stage with my stuff where branching out beyond simple projects is what I need. Thanks for offering these great giveaways!

Need some inspiration!

Hi there! I just moved to Savannah, GA on Thursday for my masters degree at SCAD in graphic design! I'm super excited, but also pretty nervous about the whole new city/new school thing! I'm setting up my apartment with my boyfriend and need some inspiration around this place and in my new place wardrobe! Something to keep me occupied when I'm homesick or nervous!

Posted by: Unicorn on September 2, 2009 at 5:42 PM

Why I Want to Win

I want this book because I have been in a total crafty slump lately. I am just inspired to do anything and that leaves me sad and feeling useless. This is exactly what I need to give me lots of cool inspiration and to get the crafty juices flowing again. (:

Posted by: Amy S on September 2, 2009 at 5:42 PM

I absolutely LOVE Amy! As a newbie sewer, I am totally hooked on her first book and have been waiting and waiting for this one to come out. I can't wait to get my hand on it. Thanks for giving us a chance to win one!

Posted by: Andrea on September 2, 2009 at 5:37 PM

This book sounds really cool! Would love to win it!

Posted by: Sarah on September 2, 2009 at 5:33 PM

I have been loving everything I've seen about this book. There have been so many great fabric projects that I never thought of and I'd love a little guidance. Plus the gift tags are just too cute.

Posted by: Christine S on September 2, 2009 at 5:32 PM

This book looks incredible. I love to sew and do crafts but I never think of pushing the fabric in new ways. I see pictures like the ones from the book and wish I knew how to do that. This book would make my day! It just looks so fun and exciting!

Posted by: peachicken on September 2, 2009 at 5:30 PM

Pick Me! Pick Me!

I would LOVE to win this book! I have all kinds of sewing aspirations, but I need an extra kick in the pants to get started on some projects... This would be just the right amount of inspiration!

Posted by: Rachel on September 2, 2009 at 5:20 PM

I Wish

I would love to have this book! I am in the process of attempting to make everything that I need in my life, and learning how to bend the rules with fabric would certainly help me out.

ooooohhhhh...... the inspiration!

For the posted comment below, which reads like this:
"This is a very lovely giveaway and I can only hope to win this!

I would love to have this book because it would be a great addition to my craft books, especially since I don't have many dealing with fabric. I bought my first sewing machine back in May..."

I forgot to put my e-mail! I apologize, I clicked the button too quickly.

This looks like a fantastic book -- we've had so much fun with freezer paper stencils already that we would LOVE to have some new inspiration!

Posted by: Anonymous on September 2, 2009 at 5:11 PM

This is a very lovely giveaway and I can only hope to win this!

I would love to have this book because it would be a great addition to my craft books, especially since I don't have many dealing with fabric. I bought my first sewing machine back in May and I still haven't used it because I'm new to it, but mostly because I have no idea what to create. This book seems like it would be a great start to start experimenting with fabrics I've been buying over the last few months :) I also started classes today, so I can't wait for the weekends to craft and take a break from all my schoolwork.

Good luck to everyone else! Autumn means good weather for crafting!

Fabric!!!

Of late I have been on a fabric binge, and now have oodles of lovely fabrics that I'm unsure what to do with. This book seems an interesting compendium of ideas!

I am really excited about this book. I am feeling so stagnant with my crafts and knitting and I think this book is going to jump start things for me. I'm anxious to get things going for Christmas. This might be just the ticket!

Because my mother's sewing machine hates me, this book would make it relent a little and be mediator between us. It would the start of a beautiful new relationship

This would be awesome!

I am a newly wed and love to sew! This book would be so helpful. Thanks for the giveaway.

Posted by: ZenAndCoffee on September 2, 2009 at 4:37 PM

It'd make my year!

I just started sewing back in April and have fallen . in . love. Ive started making Fleece Genki Hats, and really would love to learn to sew more challenging things.

I also love cosplay, and love the challenge of sewing and creating my own costumes. The screen printing and dying in this book would help me out wonders with those few tasks that just keep eluding me.

In this economy, this book would also help me expand the items I can make and sell to people who might not otherwise have access to things like I make, helping both them and me out. As well as the fabric printing it offers! Perfect for figuring out how to make those DIY fabric tags for my items that I just cant seem to get down.

My sister is also a teacher of young children, and this book would offer tons of ideas for her classes, not to mention giving me the ability to come up with more clothing ideas for both her toddler, and my older sisters toddler.

This book just seems like exactly what I have been waiting for! With it, I think my sewing machine and I could conquer the world :P

Posted by: simply_hibiscus on September 2, 2009 at 4:26 PM

GAH me want hehe

I've been drooling over this book since I first read about it and this is my second attempt to try and win it.

one main reason i want this book is cause i love the projects in it and also it would give me so much inspiration and help on making my plushies even better with embellishing them.

I love your blog I follow it constantly to see if theres any new and wonderful posts and right now i'm unemployed and can't even think of affording a 5 dollar purchase so a book is way out of reach but if I won this I would be more than thrilled.

I love the ideas in this book. I like to do projects that are just a little left of center, and the things I could learn with this book are just perfect!!

I'm crazy about the gift labels too! I send lots of little gifty things to my BookCrossing friends as RABCK (Random Acts of BookCrossing Kindness), and these labels are perfect!!

I need this book for inspiration. I have been in a major creative rut lately and I could really use the pick me up!!!

Posted by: SReed151 on September 2, 2009 at 4:02 PM

'Cause School is Starting.

Why do I need this book? Because I teach high school English in the inner city of Brooklyn, NY, and, after a long day of trying to help my kids read and write better, I love to come home and lose myself in the world of crafts for a few minutes. This book looks like the perfect way to do so. Plus, when I make something from it, I can take it to school, and the kids are always really intrigued by the concept of making something. Maybe they'll start to make stuff too!

Posted by: elisa on September 2, 2009 at 3:59 PM

Posted by: Aprilly on September 2, 2009 at 3:58 PM

Just looking at these projects is making me drool!

I've just bought a sewing machine a few months ago and I'm on a roll. I can't wait to break the rules before I've learned them.

Thanks for sharing with us!
