We are so excited to be a part of Linda Perman's blog tour for her new book Crochet Adorned! I'd like to call myself a natural born knitter but in the last few years while working at CRAFT, I've been hit with the crochet bug. So when I got my copy of Crochet Adorned, let's just say I did my own happy dance in my head. As a fashion lover, I can't resist all the projects in the book because opening it is like reading the Anthropologie catalog. And here's the great part, you can use these patterns in the book to update your wardrobe at a budget! We all have old cardigans, shirts, and dresses that could use a bit more love, don't we? As a bonus, the Stitch Dictionary in the back is really like it's own little book. In there you'll find 100 stitches for trims, flowers, geometric shapes, as well as basic and popular crochet stitches. It's such a handy reference to have that I'll know I'll be able to refer to the pages in this book again and again.

My dream project from Crochet Adorned is this Breezy Tunic above. I love how the crochet trim that embellishes the sleeve is in perfect harmony with flowered print of the shirt.

Natalie: Tell me more about your new book, Crochet Adorned. What inspired you to write this book?
A few things combined to inspire me to write the book. First off, I'm not really a sweater person. There, I said it! But I love to make things to wear, and I knew there must be some way to successfully combine crochet and sewing. Also, I started seeing crochet-embellished items on runways and in stores, and I thought it would be nice to outline some ways to achieve this look for DIYers. It's fun to work with what you have, and you can also use nicer yarns than what's sold readymade in stores. The other point of inspiration: I just love to crochet. I think it's something that you can easily apply to many other crafts like knitting and sewing, and I wanted to show ways to do that.
Natalie: Which projects in the book are your favorites?
Linda: I really love the Floral Motif Yoke Top, the Pretty Petals Tank, the Butterfly Apron and the Medallion Table Mat. I can't show you all of them here, but I can tell you that it was really fun to work with specific garments and ideas and try to get the yarn, stitch, fabric and design to converge.
Natalie: You have some amazing embellishment projects like the Breezey Tunic or the Garden Party Cardigan (on the cover). What is your process for designing trim or embellishment to an existing fashion piece?
Linda: It was a lot of back and forth. First I went shopping for garments, and sometimes the garment would inspire the project. For instance, the Breezy Tunic has inset trim on the sleeves--I knew I wanted something made of a non-knit and was thrilled to find the shirt I used, since it also had a print pattern..Once I had the garments, I had to find yarns that matched the pieces well, which, with looking at a lot of color cards online, was a process of trial and error. So sometimes I'd end up with a yarn and go hunting for a new garment. I'd choose the garments based on what kind of embellishments I thought they would lend themselves to (ie: a wide necked cardigan might make a pretty canvas for flowers, a strappy tank could easily be cut and modified) and went from there.
Natalie: What kinds of tops, dresses, or cardigans are the best pieces to embellish?
Linda: I talk about this a lot in the book, but in a nutshell, there are a few things to look for:
1. Garments that don't have a lot of stretch in key areas (ie waist band, neck line, etc). For instance, if you want to embellish the waist band of a skirt, choose one with a zipper or buttons. If you try to adorn something stretchy (ie an elastic waist), then your embellishments have to stretch, and it can be difficult to attach them without having to stretch out the garment itself. In general, it's easier to appliqué on a more stable surface, so the garment needs to be somewhat stretchless, at least in the area you plan to embellish.
2. When possible, choose garments with a little more weight/heft -- those vintage feeling super thin tees aren't really going to give you enough stability for appliqués.
3) You can either find a garment that speaks to you (a skirt that says, "give me tiers!" or a cardigan with stains that want to be covered), or start with a garment that needs a little help. For instance, one of the projects came from a real life dress of mine that was too short and too low-cut in the neck. I added a wide trim to the neck and hem with really fun results. I was able to use a lot of scraps to get a colorful effect, and my $10 dress suddenly looked like a designer item.
Natalie: What is a crochet tip you can share with our readers?
Linda: Block your work! It makes such a big difference to the way the finished piece looks. All you have to do is pin the crocheted piece to desired dimensions on a blocking board (or ironing board) and spray it with water. It will open up any lacy elements and even out wonkiness (for instance, unstraight edges on a granny square). I admit that I didn't do much blocking before I started writing the book, but I am a changed crocheter now!
Natalie: What are some upcoming projects you are working on now?
Linda: I'm doing a lot of freelance work for different magazines, including Crochet Today, Interweave Crochet, Stitch, and Sew Stylish. I mainly design crocheted accessories and little things, and do a lot of writing as well. I'm also working on another big project, but I can't quite announce that yet. And, when I have time to breathe, I'd like to get some more self-published crochet patterns up in my Ravelry store.

I need this book because I am looked on as a little old lady by many of my peers. Just because I am a university student who spends most of her time knitting and crocheting, drinking tea, talking about her cats (in conversations completely unrelated to pets or even animals in general), pulling out photos of her cats to show to people (whether they have expressed a desire to see them or not), making disapproving noises at the antics of youth today (usually in conjunction with their failure to properly appreciate her cats), complaining about her eyesight (all the better to crochet a stuffed cat with, my dear)...okay, maybe I can see their point. But I maintain that, if I had this book, I would be able to add some razzmatazz to my wardrobe, and everyone would be like, "Where did you get that gorgeous shirt/dress/apron?" and I would be all like, "I crocheted it BAM OH YES THAT JUST HAPPENED" and they would realize once and for all the wonders of crocheting. I would be a campus god, a god I tells ya.

I'm new to crochet, that is. I taught myself to crochet this summer in order to make a wig for the waldorf-style doll (Lulu) I made my little girl for her first birthday. Now I am ready to move on to projects for me! :)

This book looks wonderful! I have been addicted to crochet since I learnt last year. I have often thought it would be good to embellish clothing or other items with crochet but haven't quite had a chance to figure out how. I've been a dedicated thrift store shopper/clothing upcycler for years. This book looks like it has some great new ideas that I'd like to add to my repertoire for creating something new and beautiful from something old. My fingers are itching to try them out!

I spent vacation at home. Which is great since I have all my hooks and yarn with me. And lots of time to devote to them. So I designed and made some crocheted jewelry (with beads, lots of beads).. and then an idea hit me: what if I make some crocheted parts and turn this not so pretty tank into something more fashionable...
And then I stumbled upon this page just to learn there is already book on the subject! How cool is that? :-)
I have noticed this phenomenon several times: often some ideas turn in public in various places and with various people. Although some are early birds like Linda, aren't they?

I totally would love this book! My first experiences in crafting was crochet, which I've somewhat set aside for "quicker" projects, though I still love the look and feel of crocheted lace and embellishments. I am now really into sewing and altering existing clothes, so this would be perfect! :)

Wow! This book looks absolutely fabulous!!! I can't wait to get my hands on a copy, either by being lucky enough to win one here or by buying one at my local bookstore.
I'm guessing that if you were worried about matching yarns to garments, you could also pick a neutral garment and yarn and then dye the finished product to whatever shade you wanted.

Actually, I've never done crochet before. The only thing I know how to make with yarn and needles is a scarf.

I have a long sad history of sweaters 4 years in the making. (yes, that's in the plural). So being able to make a yoke only would be such an improvement. In fact, you could crochet in wool and use a t-shirt body in wool jersey and get a warm sweater.
OK, I might well do it even if I don't win the book, but it'd be so good to benefit from their experience and have some sensible instructions to start from, pretty please :-).. Thanks for telling us about the book in any case!

I'd absolutely love this book! I once did something like this with a shirt through a tutorial on threadbanger. It was so much fun and the results were very rewarding. I'd love to do more of these projects.

No big expectations of actually winning here (look at the number of comments! How cool for both the blog and the book!), but I think this book looks beautiful. I never buy these kinds of books for myself - too pretty to deserve I guess, plus, what if I didn't use it?! Then I'd feel horrible. But I think I'd actually use some of the ideas in this book - I'm relatively new to crocheting but these are exactly the scale of projects I can manage (no full-size sweaters for me!). Plus, when I saw the flowers and butterfly, I thought: aha! I can do THAT! And then I saw the shirt with the inset sleeves (is that the "breezy tunic"?) and I thought: wow. SO pretty. Imagine I could make THAT?!

The photos from this book are beautiful and I think the best use of using crochet in an updated way for current fashion that I have seen so far. I would not only wear all the articles of clothes I have seen from it, I LOVE them. I really want this book, and you should chose me because as I was recently laid off and am currently brokity broke broke it does not appear that I will be able to buy the book anytime in the near future.

...I've self-taught myself crochet but so far my projects have been mostly amigurumi and small trinket-like stuff. Never made a garment or anything related to clothes. It would be interesting to try finer, more detailed crochet pieces and the ability to wear your creations is just a cool bonus!

Ah, I too love Anthropologie, but it's just too, too expensive. My friend has a bit of problem with that store and is constantly encouraging me to buy from there, despite the fact that she's less financially able to spend that kind of money. I've been teaching her to knit and would love to get this book and show her how she (and me!) could come up with some of that kind of stuff for a whole lot less.
Otherwise, I guess I'll have to get my library to get it (you can do that! they'll listen!). Hurrah, for thrifty chic!

I love Linda's work, especially her use of color. I have been reading her blog for awhile now and am so excited about her first book! Both the patterns and techniques sections of the book are inspiring. I think this book will help me become a more creative crocheter by encouraging me to try new techniques and construct my own patterns using materials I already have on hand.

I have been waiting (fingers drumming) for this book! Everything I have read about it just makes me want it more. There are so many projects that I want to do that nothing else will ever get done (like cooking, laundry, you know, the boring stuff)! And a Stitch Dictionary too -- I'm in Heaven! I love the projects in this book! They are perfect in this tough economic times when buying large amount of yarn at once just isn't possible for me. But the smaller projects can keep my hands busy and make me very happy!

isn't it amazing how creativity just flows and flows through generations? my grandmother, "Mama El" as she insisted on being called, taught me to crochet when i was about 9 yrs old. my daughter, amanda, couldn't quite seem to "pick it up" as easily and i wasn't able to continue any lessons with her before she passed away at 16 yrs old. but my oldest son has blessed me with two wonderful granddaughters and i really hope i get the opportunity to teach them how to crochet! the projects in this book are beautiful examples of blending this oldtime art with newfound insight into re-purposing, re-using and re-creating. what a legacy to pass on! i would dearly love to have this book to learn from.

I recently took up crochet and am loving it! I am a rock climber and guide and want to start wearing thing that look a bit more feminine on the rocks (sounds silly but I love being a girl with all the frills!).Crochet is the perfect project to take with me on our longer climbing (and other) trips. I also love gifting my creations to others ( I love seeing their smiles!). Making the world a more beautiful place is so wonderful and what better way to do then through beautifully crocheted clothes!

This book would help me so much! Recently I have been diagnosed with a serious illness that limits my activities. The one thing I can still do is crochet! I have three beautiful growing grand daughters that love fashion and thankfully love crocheted items! I so enjoy crocheting for them and they really love wearing anything that "Gramma" makes. Now that they are older the hats, scarfs, and poncho's are not as "cool". This book would be so helpful in showing me ways to incorporate my crocheting into their everyday fashion that they can wear and enjoy! It would also help me to learn how to make clothing for them that will last and be able to be passed down.

I used to be exclusively a crocheter, but have branched off into many other fields, mainly because the crochet patterns that were available seemed to scream 'homemade' (as opposed to 'handmade'). My grandmother taught me to crochet and knit when I was a kid, and now I fill the house with half-finished projects. (Ok, most of them get finished in the end.)

I have been WAITING for something like this for a long time. You see crochet accents on all sorts of high end clothes, and you know it can't be that hard to do, but to have the designs already planned out. LOVE the sleeve panels! That would also be so cute on a knit sweater.

This book is right up my alley! I've been drawn to clothes in stores with great crocheted details, yet I don't buy them because I think, "Hey, I could do this myself." But I have yet to do that, and I think that this book will make me do it. I love all of the examples so far and need to see the rest of the book!

When I was a child, my mom crocheted doilies and other "useless" things I didn't have time for. It never inspired me to learn to crochet. In college, friends taught me to crocheted scarves, blankets and mittens, which at least seemed useful. I have grown to love the beautiful motifs in lace crochet and think that this book would be the perfect combination to meld my sensibilities with my mom's doily-making.

I am going to start teaching first grade this year, and I need to show less cleavage! Instead of buying a whole new wardrobe, I would like to be able to make my current shirts a little less revealing in a creative and cute way!!!

Like someone up above said, these projects have echoes of Anthropologie, and what girl wouldn't adore THAT, and still having money in their pocketbook? I'd love to have this book, to support my addictions of unique clothing, DIY, and crochet. It's like a conglomeration of all things that make my heart do its own little happy dance.

As of recently, I have become a crochet addict. Grabbing every book in sight to add to my library, while spewing all the info into my brain. But, I haven't added a book like this one yet to the collection!

What a great book! I know all about not being able to afford the real Anthropologie. I've tried to modify some items before - like replacing the sleeves on a standard button-down blouse with crocheted sleeves - but it always goes horribly wrong. I NEED HELP! :)

Since I learned to crochet a few months ago, I've been obsessed with making small things like amigurumi and baby blankets, but making clothes that actually have to fit is just too scary! The projects in this book seem to be just what is needed in order to definitely bring crochet to a fashionable modern image. I´m tired of seeing only baby clothes and see-through lacy shirts I could never pull off, this is definitely crochet anyone can wear!

Oh wow! I would adore this book and it would become the prize of my collection. My house caught fire in March and while only two rooms were totally destroyed, a combination of the heat and soot damage with the water the firemen used to put it out. Killed all of my craft books and magazines. Not to mention my collection of about 800 fiction/non fiction books.
