Quick and easy baby projects have been on my mind lately and Lotta Jansdotter's new book, Simple Sewing for Baby: 24 Easy Projects for Newborns to Toddlers (published by Chronicle Books) is the perfect craft book for today's stylish babies and kids. In true Lotta "Simple Sewing" fashion, you'll be able to whip up some cute baby or toddler goods in no time. I see this fast becoming my "go-to" baby crafts book for inspiration, baby gifts, as well as things to make for my own daughter, Chloe. One project I know I'll make a lot of is the Simple Pants pattern. Chloe is tall for her age and she can grow out of pants so quickly! It's nice to know I can use up my fabric stash to make her some perfect fitting pants.

This spiral bound book also contains a pocket of patterns making it handy to keep everything organized. In addition to the fantastic photography by Meiko Takechi Arquillos, the book is also filled with Lotta's cute illustrations and fabric prints. I also love the personal touch Lotta brings to the book as a mom herself. It's wonderful to flip through the pages and see the beautiful photos of her son August throughout the book.

Pictured above are the Soft Letters which I want to make for Chloe's room and the cute Soft Rattle shaped like a giraffe.

Everytime time someone has a baby around here, I find out someone else is pregnant! I could use some ideas for baby gifts... I'm running dry!

My two autistic children (high functioning, but still..) have finally found their places in the world, one away the other still in high school, and are at least momentarily fine. Their brother, who has struggled mightily with ADHD and depression, is the nicest and most responsible teenager anybody could want. He's also just a really great kid, and everybody else thinks so, too!

But I've diverged -- after 22 years of being lost in these children I am able to proceed with my dream of being a designer. At 47 years old, with 2 teens and 2 dogs at home and no money in the bank, my chances for design school are just about squandered, but I learn so much from these books. They are inspiring to me during a time in my life where it's hard to find inspiration -- teens being such conformists and all.

And if that doesn't get you violins going, I have Multiple Sclerosis which costs me time. The fatigue is brutal and I am often confused, but blessed to still have four functional limbs, decent eyesight, and speech. (Some people would argue about the speech being a blessing because, as you've probably already discerned, I love to hear the sound of my own voice! ;-)

This looks like an awesome book! My kiddo really needs new clothes and I really need to same money. Plus, I love handmade tings- they're so mu ch more unique and have way more personality than store-bought things.

After just having my third baby, I would love to be able to make those letters!

Posted by: vidamarie on May 14, 2009 at 8:19 AM

There's nothing I love more than when my son sits on my lap as I sew at the machine and I can smell his funny little boy head of hair. He loves getting to be part of the sewing action too... and we're ready to start some new projects for the baby that's on it's way. Hooray!

Posted by: erica H on May 14, 2009 at 7:55 AM

I so need this book - I'm fresh out of baby gift ideas and this would be a perfect library of ideas.

My cousin has recently had a baby that was born 3 months early. Faithlen weighed only 3 pounds! She had to have surgery to remove a baseball sized tumor from her kidney. Since she is so tiny, finding non-expensive clothes that actually FIT her is almost impossible! If I could sew some (Cute) clothes her mother would be eternally grateful.

Because I'm 5 weeks pregnant, a new sewer, and have a two-year-old!

Posted by: Ammie on May 14, 2009 at 6:57 AM

What gorgeous ideas! I often feel like a sewing novice, and I'm certain this gorgeous book would plant courage and inspiration throughout our home. My husband also loves sewing for our 4 month old son, and perhaps we can instill in him a more discriminating taste! Any of your lovely projects should do the trick.

This book would sure come in handy. I am at that stage in my life where everyone is having babies. My best friend, my cousin, and my cousin-in-law, who is having triplets, have due dates all within two months of each other. Help! Sooooo many babies!
Thanks,

There are many reason I need this fantastic book. First, I just got a hand-me-down sewing machine and I'm a little scared to use it right now. Second, I have an adorable 1 year old daughter who happens to have a slender waist and long legs. Third, all of my friends have newborns or are sporting cute preggo bellies.

I have an 11.5 month old. I'm part of a Mommy Group of like minded crafters that gather twice a month to let the kiddies play and give us Mom's some time to gain our sanity back. I think this book would give us a lot of creative projects to work on while we're together. Fingers crossed!!!

Posted by: Twitchy Fingers on May 13, 2009 at 8:22 PM

I dream of this book and the projects within,
Of all of the things that I'd do if I win.
A bib for the boy-child who can be so grotty,
And a frock for my daughter in fabric all spotty.
I must make a swaddle - bubs in those make me laugh!
And what kid wouldn't love their own rattle giraffe?
I promise I'd make things for all my relations
and create at least five things to give as donations.
For days at a time in my craft room I'd potter,
If you'd pick me to receive this great book by Jansdotter.

Posted by: Ashley D. on May 13, 2009 at 8:16 PM

Lotta Jansdotter has created some of my favorite books...I would love to have this one! I am halfway through my first pregnancy, and have been wondering where to start in making him or her some clothes. I feel that lots of patterns and books are too complicated for clothes that the baby will grow out of so quickly.I know that Ms. Jansdotter's projects will be fun, creative, and time-conscious too!

Posted by: Natalie T. on May 13, 2009 at 8:05 PM

All of a sudden all of my friends and family are having babies. I need to enlarge my baby-gift-idea circle.

Posted by: Thien-Kim on May 13, 2009 at 8:04 PM

I'm about to start my 2nd trimester for baby #2. This would be perfect. I can sew for the next few months while I have some energy. Those letters are super cute!

Posted by: schnetzy on May 13, 2009 at 7:23 PM

This book looks fabulous! I would love this book for a couple reasons. I love to craft and currently my husband and I are trying to get pregnant with our first child (we'll see next week) and I would love to create things for our little one when the day comes. Also, my sister-in-law and my best friend are both expecting babies in the next few months and I would love to make them and their babies some special items to cherish for years to come. Homemade gifts beat store bought one always!

Posted by: KatieD on May 13, 2009 at 7:08 PM

I would love to win this book. There is so much goodness in this book that I would love to create for my son. I'm especially interested in the soft letters and all of the clothes patterns. Thanks for this giveaway!

I would love to get this book. I'm a new sewer. I also work in Early Childhood Special Education, so I'm surrounded not only by small children, but pregnant families and teachers, many of whom don't have a lot of money. It would be nice to be able to make some things for my classroom, to give to my families, and to share with my co-workers.

Posted by: Jessie on May 13, 2009 at 5:17 PM

My first child is a mere 2 1/2 weeks old. I'm sure she'd love it if mommy had a book full of adorable things to make for her. :-)

Posted by: Jennifer W. on May 13, 2009 at 4:56 PM

I am aunt to 5-wk old and 4-yr old nieces and I love making gifts for them, such as quilts for both of them and quilts for their dolls. This book would definitely help give me more ideas for them. I still have a fabric book my mom made me when I was a kid and I would love my nieces to have keepsakes like that. Plus all my friends seem to be pregnant or just had kids so it would be great to have new gift ideas for them. And for my own kids, some day.
Please help me be the "cool aunt"

Posted by: Angela Kuhns on May 13, 2009 at 4:31 PM

What a neat book--from the looks of it, it must be full of wonderful ideas. My sister is expecting this fall (my first niece/nephew!!); I'm on the prowl for great, useful gifts to shower her with.

Posted by: Judith on May 13, 2009 at 3:40 PM

This book would be wonderful to own as I have many pregnant friends, or friends who have just had babies. Also I think the soft letters would make learning the alphabet fun for my daughter, something more exciting then working in a book.

Posted by: Teresa p on May 13, 2009 at 3:13 PM

I need this book because I have a bunch of friends having babies right now and definitely need to make them some cute stuff. Also, I won't be able to make it up to San Francisco to meet Lotta in person (sad face) and this would be a great consolation prize.

Posted by: Jessica Edwards on May 13, 2009 at 3:03 PM

I'm expecting my first child in October and these ideas look awesome for handmade stuff! I have many friends with babies too, and I did an entirely handmade Christmas last year, so I'm always on the lookout for cute baby ideas. :)

I am an accounting student, and being a student I perpetually have NO MONEY and her being a teacher she HAS NO MONEY. To top it off they purchased a new home to house the twinkers and haven't been able to sell their other home. They are really struggling. I want to do all I can to give her thoughtful gifts and shower her with some homemade happiness. This book would help me be able to do that. heathermrich@hotmail.com

Posted by: Carrie on May 13, 2009 at 1:40 PM

This book sounds perfect for me!

My only sibling is having TWIN BOYS this August, and they will be the first babies in our clan. The crazy part is my brother & his wife didn't find out until half way through her pregnancy!?!

Since I am currently unemployed and just starting to learn how to sew, winning a book like this this sounds like a great way to make LOTS of affordable gifts to spoil the little ones.

Hmmm... is this way too much information?!? Either way, good luck with the book. : )

Posted by: Lari on May 13, 2009 at 1:39 PM

I need the book because I all my friends are having babies this year and it would be the perfect thing to improve my sewing and to prepare presents.
I would definetely be a good training!

This would be perfect for me - seems like my friends are popping out babies on a daily basis, and I am without a job and therefore low on money and long on time! Handmade gifts would be a great way for me to go.

Posted by: Laurel on May 13, 2009 at 12:48 PM

My best friend is going to have twins. I am terribly excited for her and her husband and I can't wait to meet the little cuties. But she is moving away to the extremely expensive Bay Area and her husband doesn't have a job. They are worried about everything from diapers to rent.

I was all prepared to help with babysitting and cooking and anything else they needed, but I am going to have to settle for awesome bady/toddler/kiddie presents. But, being a non-mother myself I have no idea what they might want or need. And that is why I would love to have this book.

Posted by: Lyndsay on May 13, 2009 at 12:47 PM

Two different co-workers just had babies and I want to make them something special. This book looks like it could help me!

Posted by: Palila B on May 13, 2009 at 12:06 PM

I need this book not for me, but for my friends. Quite literally, nearly all of my good friends are having or have had babies this year, and I need project ideas for my extra fabrics for birthdays, holidays and showers. (After 6 showers in 6 months with heavily-overlapping groups of people, I have simply run out of unique shower gift ideas, and there are more on the way!)

Posted by: greetingarts on May 13, 2009 at 12:05 PM

I love crafting for babies, it's almost an instant gratification project! I already knit and sew for them, it's high time I add sewing to the list. That Snuggler is too cute and a must have for every new parent!

Posted by: Prairiedaun on May 13, 2009 at 12:03 PM

I'd like to get this book because I'm just starting to sew again, and I'm in a baby boom among friends and family right now. I'd like to be able to do more than just knit gifts for the wee ones.

Posted by: notablogger on May 13, 2009 at 11:55 AM

my stash, seven-month-old son, and creative urges got together and let me know that without this book, they'll be quite unhappy. the poor boy is frequently squeezed into mama creations that are just a wee bit too small. help us!

Posted by: Genia on May 13, 2009 at 11:53 AM

I love to sew and I'm expecting a baby boy in August! This one sounds like a perfect book :)

Posted by: TiffanyL on May 13, 2009 at 11:50 AM

I would like to learn more about sewing. With this book I could work on my skills and make beautiful gifts for my 3 friends who just had babies.

Posted by: Kerstin on May 13, 2009 at 11:47 AM

I love sewing for babies and we have a baby boom in my town here - so I would like to get new ideas.

I'm teaching myself to sew and have a baby niece to sew for as well as lots of friends having babies (my babies are big kids now.) I would love this book!

Posted by: Kadence on May 13, 2009 at 11:36 AM

My best friend and I each had our first baby 21 days apart back in February. She and her husband have had a blast making things for our boys. I would love to have some great patterns to join in the fun and repay the favor with some great items for her son!

Posted by: Sarah on May 13, 2009 at 11:36 AM

I would like to win this to gift to my friend who is expecting her first baby in November. She is going to be a crafty mama that spoils her child with homemade gifts, and I want to give her a gift that helps give her some great ideas.

It's awesome to see how many like-minded crafters are around! As evidenced by these comments, there are going to be a lot of spoiled and stylish babies out there!

Posted by: Kate Summers on May 13, 2009 at 11:34 AM

I need this book because I already borrowed my Mom's sewing machine, and want to make her a first Grand-baby!

Thanks! and super cute stuff.

i have a new nephew. so while my sister is busy busy doing the dirty work, I would love to make for him some fun fun things from this book! thanks!

Posted by: GrowingLikeTrees on May 13, 2009 at 11:25 AM

Several of my friends and I are all expecting babies this summer. I'll be making lots of new baby gifts, and the quick and easy ones are definitely what I want, since I'm due in the middle of them all (with #5). Thanks for the opportunity to win this terrific book!

Posted by: uyek on May 13, 2009 at 11:24 AM

Baby's scheduled to come in three weeks to the day and I'm on leave in week. That's enough time to sort through the stash and fire up the Singer, right?

And not to be selfish ... I have at least three other people I know with new Babies either in hand or on their way, all ripe for the handsewn goodies.

It would be nice to make and share some of the Lotta Jansdotter aesthetic among the Baby set. So much of the stuff available off the shelf is too fussy.

I'd love this book! Not only would I use it to create and sew for my first (now 7 months) but all of my friends are expecting within the next year - I have lots of baby sewing to do!

Posted by: Maria on May 13, 2009 at 11:20 AM

My 17 month old's energy has eclipsed mine, and this looks like the perfect way to reclaim some productivity on the go while making stellar treats for him and all of his new tiny friends!

Posted by: LO on May 13, 2009 at 11:19 AM

You had me at simple! I would love to win this book because I'm expecting my first baby in September and I'm only a beginner at sewing, so I need all the help I can get! :)

Posted by: cygnetsmall.wordpress.com on May 13, 2009 at 11:18 AM

I have her printing book and it is really nice. I don't know that I really NEED this book but I would sure love to have it since almost everyone I know has either just had a baby or is pregnant.

Posted by: Holly on May 13, 2009 at 11:17 AM

I would love to have this book. I'm due with my first in October!

Posted by: Janelle on May 13, 2009 at 11:16 AM

Looks like a fabulous book. I would get a lot of use out of it making things for my nephew, goddaughter, son and foster kids!

Posted by: Beth on May 13, 2009 at 11:15 AM

oooooh I need this book. I've been sewing for a little over a year now and simple is a necessity to keep me going as I teach myself - mostly because of time constraints with the toddler I'm with all the time, partly because of Mommy brain I experience from being pregnant with our second.

These projects look like exactly the kind of tasks I can handle tackling - and exactly the kind of projects my kids want to have! (my daughter loves the "fabwic store!" and always asks if I can make her something).

Posted by: Valalala on May 13, 2009 at 11:09 AM

This book looks amazing! I would love to win it, I'm a "work while babies sleep" mom with 3 kids under 4 yrs old and a sewing machine screaming out for attention --- those soft letters look amazing!!

Posted by: Holly on May 13, 2009 at 11:06 AM

I'm having my first baby in September, and I'd love this book so I can make lots of cute things for him!

Posted by: rwood on May 13, 2009 at 11:05 AM

I would love to win this book. I have 13 month old and will probably have more children in the future. I love making things for my daughter and sometimes I'm at a loss for patterns that are functional yet stylish!

Posted by: Meghan Caterino on May 13, 2009 at 11:05 AM

I am in desperate need of some inspiration for my growing pile of thirfted fabric. I have a 1 year old and can't wait to try some of the projects in the book - for both my little one and friends.

Posted by: julie329.vox.com on May 13, 2009 at 11:00 AM

I'm still hopeful I can have a second and would love to make things for future baby. I also know a million people with kids and having kids and would like to offer a few more handmade items as gifts.
thanks

Posted by: Meghan on May 13, 2009 at 10:59 AM

What fantastic looking projects! I didn't even realize this book had been published - thanks for sharing!

I am not having a baby of my own but am surrounded by friends who are having (or have recently had) babies. I love sewing presents to celebrate the baby showers and births, but the usual bibs and quilts are getting a little tired. These look like such creative and lovely presents for the new babies and toddlers!

Posted by: luna de chrysalis on May 13, 2009 at 10:58 AM

I'd love this book. I have a new niece #6 coming soon, and i'd love to make something out of my sister's old baby blanket.

Posted by: karen f. on May 13, 2009 at 10:58 AM

Yay, giveaway!

My reasons: I'm having a bebe in about four months, I NEED motivation to start making stuff instead of just gathering pattern ideas, and I LOVE Lotta's designs.

Posted by: tmogs on May 13, 2009 at 10:58 AM

As a totally hands-on auntie, I love to help out by crafting things for my nieces & nephew that my sisters don't have time to do! With this book I can branch out into sewing clothes for them!

Posted by: Julie on May 13, 2009 at 10:55 AM

It seems like everyone I know is knocked up! Plus, I'll be a stay-at-home-mom in September (while hopefully gestating my own fetus), so I'm looking forward to lots and lots of crafting time!

Posted by: Kelsey on May 13, 2009 at 10:55 AM

I have a new half brother, and would love to make some of these projects for him!

Posted by: Jenna Lou D on May 13, 2009 at 10:50 AM

I'd love to win so I can sew things for my lovely new god child. He's 5 months old!

Posted by: Amanda G. on May 13, 2009 at 10:48 AM

Over the last couple of years, I have become THAT lady who makes all the new babies something handmade and special. I love Lotta Jansdotter designs, and this would expand my repetoire for baby gifts!

Posted by: Bran on May 13, 2009 at 10:48 AM

This book release couldn't have happened at a better time. I'm about to become an Auntie! Also, one cousin and two best friends have first babies due this summer.

I spent an hour or so online this morning sorting through four different baby registries, and I'm a little bummed by the sameness (not to mention frequent plasticness) of all the mass-market goods for babies.

Clearly, it's time to oil up the gears in the old sewing machine. I'd really rather give something useful and heartfelt and unique, and I know Lotta's book can help me out.

Posted by: Tiffany on May 13, 2009 at 10:47 AM

I am not expecting or planning to be expecting anytime soon but I absolutely adore Lotta Jansdotter/her work and would definetely make things from this book as gifts ..and for general art/craft/sewing inspiration.

I'd LOVE to win this! Thanks for the chance!

I would love to win this book. Not only do I like to make things for my 2 girls, but like to make for our many toddler friends.

Posted by: pearvana on May 13, 2009 at 10:43 AM

All my friends are having babies! And they all need cute, fun, homemade gifts! This book would be the perfect source of gift ideas and patterns.

Posted by: angelune.wordpress.com on May 13, 2009 at 10:43 AM

My best friend is pregnant and my other best friend is my sewing buddy and we really really want to hand make everything for this new baby. This is the first baby in our group of friends so we've never sewn anything related to tiny people, that is why we need this book!

Posted by: efroehlich on May 13, 2009 at 10:38 AM

This book looks wonderful! I'd love to win it and include it in a gift basket for some crafting friends who are low on funds but high in creativity!

Posted by: Vone on May 13, 2009 at 10:36 AM

I have 2 beautiful girls and would love to sew for them more.

Posted by: Erin Compton on May 13, 2009 at 10:35 AM

I love that book.

I need that book because I have a 1 year old in need of crafty things, as well as many many many babies about to be born in my family this year, no less than 4! AND there are 2 babies about to be born in my church that I need to make gifts for.

Posted by: captain tightpants on May 13, 2009 at 10:35 AM

i love lotta jansdotter's patterns...

i'd like to enter the drawing because everyone around me is pregnant, and if someone doesn't enlighten me regarding what baby items a new mom would really appreciate, all of my friends are going to be stuck with knitted pants. knitted pants with a devil tail attached to them.

AND THEN HOW WILL WE TELL THE CHILDREN APART??? :P

Posted by: redzipstar on May 13, 2009 at 10:34 AM

I am a fairly intimidated sewer and have been gaining confidence making projects from Lotta's Simple Sewing book. I really enjoy her clear and helpful writing style.

I would love to move forward in my abilities and be able to give some of these projects as gifts! I am the mother of a 9-month old, and have three close friends who have had babies in the last month (whoah!), as well as three friends due by the end of the year. My attempt to crochet complicated baby gifts while working full time, taking care of my little guy (and husband!) and working a second part-time job is not going so well. The embroidered t-shirts are coming along a little better...but I think cute sewing projects would work much better for me and all the little bundles of joy that have arrived/are arriving this year!

Posted by: Andrea on May 13, 2009 at 10:33 AM

My sister-in-law two toddlers about a month ago. This week she found out she was pregnant! So, I now have three little ones I need to make gifts for... :)

Posted by: Eva on May 13, 2009 at 10:33 AM

a lot of my friends are having babies, so i need projects to sew up for them! i feel that a handmade project is the way to go for that 1st present :)

My son just turned 1 and I would love to make more things for him. The book looks great!

Posted by: DebbieKL on May 13, 2009 at 10:27 AM

This book looks really nice. I haven't been able to find a good book for baby and toddler gifts. I love to make things for my son, friends and family, and of course my Etsy shop!

Posted by: AbbyT on May 13, 2009 at 10:26 AM

I'm a sewing newbie armed with a 1963 Singer and a whole lot of babies/toddlers around her. Lotta Jansdotter's books have been a huge inspiration and I would love to work with this one too. Also, I'll be an Auntie for the first time in July and would love to welcome Baby with some handmade love.

Posted by: Emily on May 13, 2009 at 10:23 AM

I NEED to get this book!! please oh please let me be the winener! :) I have a 2 year old and a 7 week old who I am excited to start making things for!!

i need this book because i have an adorable godson that is in need of awesome gifts. &&& i am planning for my first kiddo fairly soon.

Posted by: pghrugbyangel on May 13, 2009 at 10:21 AM

I would love this book! My very first niece was born on Monday night and I'm so excited to make things for her! My family lives pretty far away - I only see them usually 3 times/year - so for me to be able to send things to my niece as she grows up so that she'll get to know me a bit would be amazing!!

Posted by: Mama K on May 13, 2009 at 10:15 AM

I need this book because everyone is having babies! I have so many gifts to make. Not to mention I'm expecting baby #2 myself in Sept.

Posted by: JJ on May 13, 2009 at 10:15 AM

I would LOVE this book! We are two teachers now living on one salary so that I can stay home with my little guy. It is so hard to find cute, inexpensive boy clothes and toys. This book would let me make them myself! Choose me, choose me!!!

Posted by: Shannon on May 13, 2009 at 10:14 AM

First off, I love Lotta's stuff - she's my crafty inspiration!

Secondly, I have about a bajillion pregnant friends, and I need some ideas to make different baby items (than the boring things I've been making lately).

Thirdly, of course, when I have a little one, it'll come in handy as well!

Posted by: River on May 13, 2009 at 10:12 AM

My sister is en route to the delivery room right now! I would love to be able to shower my new niece with presents, as I am bound and determined to be "the cool aunt," even if I live 500 miles away. :)

What a neat book!

Posted by: Lisa W on May 13, 2009 at 10:12 AM

I'm 4.5 months pregnant with my first, and am trying to mostly buy/ask for stuff that is either used or handmade. I've got a ton of fabric though, and the projects in this book look great!

Posted by: thefeltmouse on May 13, 2009 at 10:09 AM

I am in a bit of a creative slump after the birth of my son and feeling like I can't complete anything. I would love a little creative jumpstart!

Posted by: fremontmama on May 13, 2009 at 10:08 AM

How fun! Thanks for the giveaway. I would love to win this book! I could put it to good use. I'm a newbie sewer, and am enthusiastically embracing new projects, and I LOVE Lotta Jansdotter's style. I have a couple of kiddos myself, plus everyone around me seems to be breeding like rabbits, I could wear this book out making gifts for people. Pick me! :)

Posted by: Kara on May 13, 2009 at 10:06 AM

I will keep my fingers and toes crossed for this one!

Posted by: Kara on May 13, 2009 at 10:13 AM

Oops, I forgot to say why I need it! My own boys are too big for this book now but I am now the lucky aunt of the only baby girl in the family. I am itching to start sewing more wonderful (floral and pink) gifts for my sister's sweet little daughter, Willa.

Posted by: em on May 13, 2009 at 10:06 AM

What a lovely book! I'd like to enter the drawing.

I'm 5 1/2 months pregnant with my first child. I've been sewing and crafting for a while, but most of this baby stuff is new to me. None of my relatives know anything about sewing or crafting, and none of my crafty friends have kids. I really want to be able to make some nice, simple, useful things for my little one.

Posted by: Johanna I. on May 13, 2009 at 12:20 PM

I have a 10-month-old niece, 4-month-old nephew, and two more on the way. Plus, it's Lotta Jansdotter. Enough said.
