Checkin' In: Weaver Extraordinaire Travis Meinolf

CRAFT_Travis_Portrait2.jpg

The cover star of CRAFT Volume 08, the Weaving issue, Travis Meinolf continues to be up to great things. He regularly updates his Action Weaver blog with his newest happenings, workshops, and weaves. One of the coolest projects he worked on as of late is a collaboration with tailor Roy Slaper. Back in 2007, Travis hand-wove his own denim (apparently to to impress Sensei Nakajima on his visit to CCA), and Roy recently helped him to fashion the denim into proper jeans.

Here are the jeans in progress:

And the finished jeans soaking:

Great job, gentlemen! These are straight professional-looking!

If you haven't already gotten your hands on CRAFT Volume 08, you can still pick one up in the Maker Shed. It comes with a cardboard loom designed by Travis. You just cut it out, follow his instructions, and weave away.

Really?

Sorry to disappoint, Kathy, I hate to admit it but I guess it's hard to be a "public figure" and represent your craft and your ideas to everybody on the bus all the time. Wish you had expressed your displeasure in person, it would have been good feedback! Nobody who knows me would ever accuse me of being an entrepreneur, that's for sure.

Hmmph

I met Travis on the MUNI here in San Francisco, but I didn't have a positive impression of him as an artist/weaver, only as an entrepreneur. :(

That's so awesome and inspirational, Jenny! Thanks for sharing!

I <3 Travis!

I first saw Travis in your video, and checked out his blog, and because of this I decided to check out weaving. Now I'm hooked on weaving. Thank you Travis! (and Craft!)
