Creative Uses for Wrapping Paper Scraps
Now that the holidays are drawing to a close, you're likely surrounded by piles of ripped-up wrapping paper. What to do with the scraps? The Natural Beauty Workshop has some great creative reuse ideas, such as: making paper beads, covering school books, creating origami, and more.

Bloody Plush Toys

I love the detail work on the drippy blood on these sinister plush toys. They look to be mostly crocheted. I can't find out who made them, does anybody know? Via Geekologie.
UPDATE: the artist is Patricia Waller, and she has plenty of other lovely work, too.

Italy Quilt For Lovers ... From a Family
I love this Italy quilt that was created - literally - by a family for one of the family member's significant other who has been in Italy for a semester. The story behind the project is fun, and I love the idea of families being crafty together. Not to mention, the end result is fantastic!

RRRIPP!! Paper Fashion

Regine @ WMMNA writes about an interesting exhibition in Greece:
RRRIPP!! Paper Fashion, an exhibition conceived by ATOPOS in Athens, is the outcome of an investigation on paper clothing, a long-forgotten but very popular phenomenon in the United States at the end of the '60s. The fad can be traced back to 1966 when manufacturing company Scott Paper Company used the paper dress to promote their toilet paper and paper tissues. In exchange of $1.25, happy housewives would be mailed a paisley or op-art 'Paper Caper' dress and some coupons to buy napkins and toilet rolls. Demand exceeded the 500,000 garments produced and other manufacturers soon followed with designs to promote their own goods.
There are lots of pictures with illuminating descriptions of the interesting projects on We Make Money Not Art.

HOW TO - Rub-On Transfers

I've been seeing more rub-on transfers around the Internet and wondered if you could make your own - sure enough, I found instructions on the Rubber Stamping Fun site; their process uses hair products. You can also find rub-on transfer decal paper on eBay.

Top Secret Husband Embroidery
Here's a pic from the CRAFT Flickr pool, uploaded by _whitty_. Better file this one under "awwww!":
He learned to embroider for me. He tucked himself in the basement and learned off the internet in secret. They are a glass of milk and a bowl of chocolate ice cream, things he has given me a thousand time before but he made some for me to hang on the wall. I knew he was working on something down there, but he wouldn't reveal what and I can really tell he put alot of love into this.
How sweet is that?!

HOW TO - To-Go Cup Tissue Dispenser

On Curbly:
There's a company out there called WeGo, that sells facial tissues in a take-away coffee cup. In the interest of DIY-ism, I bought one of these cups of 50 sand-paper-rough tissues for 3 bucks so I could pop off the top, rip the guts out and figure out how to make them. Here's my easy, no-cost version.
Thanks, Moxie!

Motorized Yarn Winder

Craft reader Adrienne tipped us off to this cool motorized yarn winder on Robot Party - if you don't have a small child around to turn the crank on the ball winder, you might want to automate it.

HOW TO - Custom-Mixed Glitter Spices
The Crafty Chica shares how to put together these glitter "spice jars" by custom mixing various colors of glitter. She mentions that you can remove the labels on the spice jars and make your own, but I love how she's incorporated them into her project and matched the glitter mix to the name of the spice.

KCRW on The Handmade Movement
Just thought I would let you guys know I was recently interviewed by Frances Anderton, host of KCRW's DnA (Design and Architecture) show. We talked about the resurgence of handmade in today's economic and technological climate and more.
We've seen the growth in modern handicraft, evidenced by the thousands attending craft fairs like LA's Felt Club. And we are seeing the desire for hand-hewn raw materials, like clay and wood. There's a palpable desire for the authentic, the natural, even as the handmade industry is being enabled by the internet. We'll talk about all this on today's DnA, with Jenny Ryan, founder of Felt Club; Catherine Bailey, creative director of Heath Ceramics, now opened in LA; William Stranger, furniture-maker whose wood work is currently on show at the Pasadena Museum of Contemporary Art; and Brooke Hodge, Curator of Architecture and Design at MOCA.
The show aired yesterday, but you can still listen to it in the archives here.
