Fashion Inside Out by Daniel Vosovic - Ask Daniel Your Fashion Questions on CRAFT!

danielvbook_coverphoto.jpg
Former Project Runway contestant and fashion designer Daniel Vosovic has a new book due out later this month called Fashion Inside Out: Daniel V's Guide to How Style Happens from Inspiration to Runway and Beyond. The book is a comprehensive guide on how to create fashion -- from inspiration and design, to the technical process of pattern-making and sewing, and finally selling your work to a client and taking it down the runway. Interspersed in the book are Q&A's from industry professionals too! There's never been such a book like this before so I'm really excited that it will be out soon.

But wait, there's more great news here! I've got an interview coming up later this month with Daniel V on the CRAFT blog. We'll be talking more about this new fashion book and find out what he's been up to lately. He's also agreed to take questions from you our readers!

So, if you have a question on how to sew that perfect dress or what's the latest fashion silhouette, please add your question as a comment to this post by Monday, October 6th, Noon PST and we'll collect and consolidate the best ones for him.

Designing for the Return of Disliked Trends

Are there any past trends making a comeback now that you hate (or don't particularly love?) When that happens, how do you bring yourself to incorporate that trend into your designs if the trend itself does not really inspire you?

creative vs. curatorial

These are two lines of inquiry that I'm interested in — if just a part of any of them will fit in the interview that's lovely. I'd like to learn Daniel's thoughts on any of these ideas. I find fashion as a form of communication fascinating. But I'm a fine arts major, so I geek out in that general direction.

What are your thoughts on balancing the creative [DIY] with the curatorial [choosing pieces made/designed by others] aspects of fashion? How do you think they mesh for a person interested in creating their own style and fashion in their personal wardrobe?

High fashion frequently seems either unattainable or impractical for much of the population. How do you, as a fashion designer, balance the fantastical fashion that inspires and the practical fashion that a person can wear in their daily life? How do you see others in your industry dealing with that balance?

questions for Daniel V.

What did you find was the most difficult part of marketing yourself and your work?
