Collin @ MAKE points us to this clever use of a small-denomination coin as a replacement button. Just drill two holes and sew!

I was wondering the same(I´m honduran) and it actually caught me off guard to see a coin of 20 cents turned into a button! :D
I don't think it's illegal, I've seen coins on sooo many things over the years... bracelets, necklaces, wooden boxes...

As long as you're not defacing it in order to defraud the government, it's not illegal. Bre's Coin Ring video podcast talks about this:
