SEW U Home Stretch by Wendy Mullin and Eviana Hartman
Web Site: Built by Wendy

I love the ease of knit wear but it's hard to find simple patterns for what I want. Now, Wendy Mullin of Built by Wendy fame has a new book out called SEW U Home Stretch that is filled with fashionable knit sewing projects from simple t-shirts, dresses, to hoodies. The spiral-bound book is filled with clear instructions and illustrations, along with all the patterns in a special pocket in the back of the book. I'm looking forward to making some of the babydoll dresses and t-shirts using some of the jersey knits I bought over at Crybaby's Boutique.

But wait, there's more! Two lucky random readers are going to win this fantastic book! Just leave a comment in this post and tell us why you need this book. Please make sure you include your email address in the comment form field not the text area (it won't be published on the site). All comments will be closed by Noon (PST) on Tuesday, June 10th. The lucky winners will be announced tomorrow evening on the CRAFT blog. Good luck!

Let's hear it for Wendy!

I love that Wendy has revitalized the how-to market with her sew U book line. I am a fan of her goods, I have her guitar straps, a fantastic Mount Rushmore silk dress with rhinestones in the sky line, and gift fab great lakes t shirts from her LA store on third street. Her style takes the best of 70's silhouettes and updates them with great new prints and graphics. I was recently gifted a Juki serger, perfect for knits, and with the help of this book I can take the interlock yardage I've been saving from the thrift store and turn it into some wonderful Wendy-esque new garments!

would love to finally get a handle on sewing jersey!

after my first failed attempt at the tshirt quilt from a craft book nearly 10 years ago, I have ever since been terrified of jersey. would love a book like this to help get over my fears as I think it would be really neat to be able to sew stuff with jersey for myself, for my boyfriend, etc.

I would love to win Wendy's new book, "Sew U, Home Stretch." I have her first book, and she taught me how to make homemade clothes look cool and all my own style. Her patterns are awesome and easy to follow instructions on how to sew. She taught me through her first book how to sew clothes pretty much.. I would love to win her new book, it would make my day. I have two small daughters and would love to incorporate Wendy's styles into their wardrobe some day, and mine. I hope to win. Thanks

Sewing knit fabric?I have to learn that!!

Wow! I am very much looking forward to looking at this book! I recently tried sewing using knit fabric for the first time and did realize that it is a different skill. It was fun but a little difficult so I would love to learn the special skills that none of my sewing books have explained!!

Wow! I didn't realize so many crafty divas would be eager to get their hands on this book, although I can't blame them! Wendy's first SEW U is an inspiration to the sewing world- what a great tool for all sewers, young and old, who need a nice nudge into the great expanse known as the sewing world. I, like all the other crafty people here, would love this book to add to my stash. I don't know what would make me convince you that this book would really benefit me because I'm sure it would invaluable. I treasure all the sewing books I have- I started with "The Bishops Guide to Clothing Construction" just a few years ago when I got it at a yard sale for under a dollar. That book is what started my interest in sewing, but now as I have progressed some I realize that it's hard to use a book published in the 70s for things you want to wear today. Polyester only gets you so far.
This book would be a great aid for me, and I couldn't express my gratitude is I received it. Thank you all so much for the site!

I need this book because I need help sewing knits!

Posted by: Megan on June 10, 2008 at 8:44 AM

I used to sew from store bought patterns, but found the whole process an ordeal, although I love the idea of making my own clothes. I'm hoping to get back into sewing this summer, and think the solution is to use minimal patterns, so I can be more creative. That would make sewing so much more interesting. I think this book would be a great way to start with that!

my wardrobe is seriously lacking in style

I need this book because my wardrobe is seriously lacking in style and I a determined to turn that around by sewing my own clothes. Knit fabric is my favorite kind of fabric to wear, so this book is perfect for me.

I need this book because I am desperately broke, and I am DYING to start making my own wardrobe! I don't even have a serger - I need some guidance on how to use the settings on my sewing machine to sew knits without leaving the seams all wonky. Plus, I have all these knit skirts and cardigans which are destined for the junk heap unless they get refashioned into cute t-shirts, dresses and hoodies!! Help a girl out with a freebie!!!

I am a new sewer. I am also a slob and love to wear strechy fabrics, but I have no idea how to sew them!

Posted by: Izzy M on June 10, 2008 at 7:00 AM

I've been sewing for years, but I've always had a fear of knits. Now I'm really starting to adore them, and so many fab new knit prints are coming out, that I need to sew knit dresses and shirts! I can't afford a serger and the little bit of this book I've read seems to have good instruction for sewing strechy fabrics with a regular machine.

I just got my serger fixed after it was in storage for 3 years. I have forgotten how to use it. This would be perfect to get back into the swing of sewing!

cuz I love built by wendy

I love Built by Wendy and all her designs, but most of her creations I can't afford. With this book I can make clothes that match her spirit and cultivate my own. In my line of work, I need clothes that are comfortable and allow me to move freely. That's why I love wearing knits. But knits are pretty hard to sew, and I'm still figuring the methods out. I think this book could really help me in creating some wearable things. thanks!!!

I really need this book because I've just uncovered my sewing machine for the first time in years (not that I used it much years ago either) and I want to sew my own clothes very much, but I have no idea what to sew. I need some guidance in the form of this book because if I don't start making *something* I am going to go mad.

Changing body shape

Just a month ago I gave birth to a baby son. Now my body is changing, from being a woman with a huge bump I am, right now, larger than I was before the bump, but cannot wear pregnant clothes, cause they are too big. And I am getting smaller all the time. That is why I would need the book; to sew clothes in stretch to follow my body's changes.

Posted by: Amy on June 9, 2008 at 10:31 PM

No Money, Need Awesome Clothes!

I'm a medical student who has already put myself over $40,000 in debt this year alone, and will continue to do so for the next 3 years. I'm very tightly budgeted, but that includes making lots of my own clothes, since I need it to fit well, look professional, and be able to move while I do exams on people. Knits are great for this! If everything I wore could be a knit, I would probably be at least 11.87% happier. Please, let my arms be free and unconstricted to perform the peripheral vision exam!

So many old T-shirts, so little knowledge!

I never let my mom throw away my old camp shirts, soccer club T's, class shirts...anything. I have so very many t-shirts at home, and now nearly twice as many since I got to college and have been recieving T-shirts everywhere (class of 2011; football supporters shirt; ultimate frisbee club shirt; vote for this kid for class president shirt; etc).
Not only has my T-shirt collection doubled this year, but also I have learned to sew. Since my grandma passed away I have been using her machine to teach myself, from the ground up. I've made some pretty neat things too -- you can see most of them on my website, http://kaytdek.trevorshp.com, but I really don't quite know what I am doing. I have learned much from myself -- like that jeresy is an amazing fabric because it doesn't fray and it sits still nicely, but I think I need some direction at this point to help me get to the next level.
I would love to have a copy of this book so that I could learn how to sew for real, so that my seams are pretty and I know what all the other stitches are for. And so that I can put to good use all these lovely cotton jersey t-shirts with lovely silk-screened prints, which I have been saving for so long!

I NEED EDUCATION!

I am absolutley in love with sewing. Doing it for about 15 years. Started when I was about 12. I for THE LIFE of me, can not sew knits. I see so many clothes out there that would be soooo easy to make if I only knew how. Also, I love to buy the patterns by Wendy at the store, but alas, I am pretty much poor. PLEEEEEAAAAASSSEE!!! May I have that book? **Big grin and pleading eyes**

Posted by: Angie on June 9, 2008 at 9:03 PM

Why I deserve this book!

I consider myself a DIY activist- I'm really passionate about making and sewing things; I think there's something really magical and organic about bringing something to life with your own hands. I eat, breathe and sleep DIY- I blog about it, read other blogs, and have even been reading Craft since it was just tiny crafty posts on the Make blog! I need this book because I took a year off from school to bring my goal of opening my own online shop of handmade clothes to life- when you're self-taught, you tend to doubt yourself, and I think this book would give me the guidance I confidence I need to make my goal a reality. There's something raw and passionate about sewing to me, like you're really tapping into your inner self and understanding and testing your capabilities. Thanks! And I'll definitely send pictures of the stuff I make if you pick me!

Kirstyn needs this book.

My best friend Kirstyn needs this book. She is a crafter of all sorts, but mainly sews. She is great at turning old clothes into great new things but knits have always been her demise. She has tried time and time again with knits but never succeeds. Her recreations stem from her thriftyness, which is also a hinderance in her sewing. She won't buy herself books, just check them out from the library. She always gets them back on time, so she never has time to really use them. I know this book would be an amazing thing for her to have and something she would use all the time!
Please help Kirstyn become the amazing seamstress I know she is!

What, there's a way to sew knits without my machine eating them? Tell me more....

Posted by: dorothy on June 9, 2008 at 8:24 PM

just this afternoon, I returned the first SEW U book back to the library with a heavy, heavy heart. I renewed it twice, and painstakingly traced the patterns out on my own paper with a tracing wheel, so as not to ruin the pattern for future borrowers.

I am such a fan of built by wendy, I've bought several of her simplicity patterns on 1.99 pattern days at fabricland. I've been making a lot of my own clothes lately in an effort to save money and curb my consumption, but my technical skills fall short when it comes to knits.
I'd love to start sewing knits, but I have no idea where to start. I need wendy to hold my hand!

Posted by: Tia on June 9, 2008 at 8:13 PM

Why I need this book.

I need this book because I am a stay at home mom that enjoys sewing but doesn't have all the means I would like to learn about working with all types of fabrics. So trial and error really isn't in my budget. Sewing is my relief from the hectic world of motherhood. I've never learned how to make patterns myself and have no idea where to begin. Getting this book sure could get me on my way!

Posted by: Georgia on June 9, 2008 at 8:01 PM

I love BBW!

I would love to add this book to my library. I learned how to sew from Wendy's first book. She's inspired me to create things I have never thought I'd be capable of doing. I always refer to it when I'm stuck on a project and Wendy's book has never failed me. Instructions are very clear and I recommend it to everyone. I would like to fight my fear of sewing knits, especially without having a serger. I'm very excited about this new book and I think it will teach me even more than her first. If I don't win, I'm definitely spending the money to buy it.

Posted by: A on June 9, 2008 at 7:08 PM

oh! i want this book!

I would really like to receive this book for a couple reasons. First, it's really cool to make your own clothes and wear them! Second, clothes these days are getting skankier and more revealing, why should I pay companies to keep making that stuff? And third, who doesn't love free stuff? No, but I really want to sew some of my own stuff, and this could really kick me off to a good start!

Love to work with KNITS

I just bought several yards of various knits. The colors are amazing and so feminine. Unfortunately, I no longer fit the pattern I have and it is in horrible condition. Then to look for knit patterns is a hassle. It is like looking for a needle in a hay stack. So please consider me for this wonder pattern book. I get thrills just thinking that there are several patterns I could work off of.

I'd love to win this book! As a junior in high school (now senior!), I don't have much money or time to get books on sewing. I'd love to learn, though, and make my own stuff! :)

Posted by: Catcara on June 9, 2008 at 5:55 PM

I require this book because I squirm a lot. I require more clothes that wiggle with me, otherwise I'll have to sit up straight like a normal person. I can't get with that.

Posted by: Robyn Coburn on June 9, 2008 at 5:53 PM

I'd love to win this..

because, like others I have huge stash of knits and a serger that I'm sure I don't use to its full potential.

I would love to get this book, I have tons of knit fabrics in my stash, and never use them, because- quite frankly- I dont know how to properly sew them. (And the whole knit sewing thing freaks me out a little...)

Posted by: Kelly on June 9, 2008 at 5:37 PM

I would love to have this book because the only things I am used to sewing are quilting cottons...so maybe this would cure me of my fear of sewing knits!

Posted by: Guin on June 9, 2008 at 5:34 PM

too hot for anything else

This is my first summer as a northern gal transplanted in the heart of the south. It's June and already 95 degrees. I need a wardrobe full of thin cottony comfort to wear in this ridiculous heat 'cause this flower is a-wiltin.

Sew Me!!

I'm sew into this stuff! I was an avid seamstress in high school & college and I need this book to help me craft my own clothing. There aren't ANY options for big girls with fashion sense where I live here in Mexico. So I have to sit down at the sewing machine and make my way. I want to make t-shirts and fun knit dresses! :o) Thanks for the op.

I'd like to have this book because I'm broke from having to move and will be for a while. Also, cute fat girl clothes are super expensive and never fit right anyway.

Posted by: Ailie on June 9, 2008 at 4:36 PM

I would love this book! I love Built by Wendy but I can't afford it at all. I saved a lot of money to buy one of her dresses and I'm wearing it right now, haha. It's the only dress I've ever felt comfortable in. I learned how to sew in an apparel class at my school but I have a little trouble sewing on my own. I think this book would be super super helpful and also super awesome.

Posted by: Christine Vo on June 9, 2008 at 4:34 PM

Oh pretty please? :>

I need this book to sew and alter clothing I actually want to wear for a lot less cheap and much more satifaction. I'm starting college this fall so poor college student I shall be! (Gross, I just imagined myself eating ramen every day.)

That and I want to actually finish a beginners sewing project other than a totebag for once.

I need this book because I bought some gorgeous knit fabric a while ago, and have been too scared to cut into it and sew it up! I need books on things to make me feel confident enough to start things.

Posted by: Teresa Hardy on June 9, 2008 at 3:31 PM

Want it! Because I got SOOOOO much use and knowledge out of her the other Sew U book that I rave about it to anyone who will listen. I've been buying a lot of knit fabric lately but I'm a little intimidated by it. Tried a few things and nothing has turned out good so I think I need some Wendy love.

Posted by: Antoinette on June 9, 2008 at 3:23 PM

I love the first book and have sewn several of the BBW/ BBY Simplicity patterns. Maybe Wendy can get me past my general irritation/ fear of knits? I hope???

Posted by: victoria c on June 9, 2008 at 3:17 PM

I would definitely use this book. I am 7 weeks postpartum and stretchy fabrics are my friend right now, no reason I can't have cute clothes even if they are comfortable, right? I would be able to sew things during my baby's naptime because he still sleeps alot at this point!

Posted by: mj on June 9, 2008 at 3:17 PM

I was taught to sew thinking that knits required a serger, so it's hard for me to imagine that it's actually legal for me to sew them on my regular machine. I'd love to try, though!

Posted by: Kelly on June 9, 2008 at 3:15 PM

It would be great to win this book. I'm a fashion design student and there's not a lot of knowledge on sewing knits at my college, so the added information would help my designs stand out from the rest.

Posted by: Sewer-Sewist on June 9, 2008 at 2:57 PM

I could really use this book! Even though I consider myself an "Advanced" sewer, I am a knits moron. For whatever reason, I never really learned to work with knits, and always end up with the dreaded stretch-out neckband. Ugggh. Hopefully, Wendy could hook me up with the skills to prevent this oh-so-unflattering look.

~Sarah

Posted by: stef on June 9, 2008 at 2:09 PM

Please please

Most of the patterns I sew at home are the Built By You patterns. I loved the first book but was particularly drawn to the second; I have long put off sewing knits because I was afraid of them: sliding around, bunching up, getting caught in the machine. I would love this book so i can be confident enough to tackle my first knit project.

Help me get over the intimidation!

I need this book because I am intimidated by patterns that assume a lot of knowledge that a self-taught gal like me doesn't have. I've used the other SEW U book and found it very useful.

Posted by: Aimee on June 9, 2008 at 2:05 PM

Perfect timing!

I just made a goal to make this the summer of sewing, and had actually added this very book to my Amazon wishlist! I would love to win it so I can learn to make my own clothes. :) I haven't sewn in over 15 years, this would give me that kick in the bum that I need.

Please!!

I would love to have a copy of this book. I am a novice sewer, but I'm working on my skillz (yes, I know, a Z) so that I can sew more clothes for myself. I'm a high school chemistry teacher with a very strange body shape, so finding clothes that fit me and look good for work is difficult. I'm a little afraid of knit fabrics, but they'd be great for work and this book would hopefully help me out! Thanks, Craftzine and Built by Wendy for doing this give-away!

Posted by: Casey on June 9, 2008 at 1:56 PM

I need this book because I am doing a year-long experiment of not buying retail garments. I'm either buying vintage/thrifted, or making my own. I DESPERATELY need a few tshirts for this summer, and maybe a knit dress or two, and I know that having Wendy's book would give me the confidence I need to sit down and make these garments (and keep from breaking down and buying them instead)! And that would be fantastic to be able to actually make my own knit garments rather than just going without (which is what it's down to now!). ;)

Plus, I'm going on my honeymoon to the Caribbean later this year, so I could use some easy-to-pack outfits that are chic and DIY (of course!). lol.

Posted by: michelle on June 9, 2008 at 1:55 PM

big girls need knits too

i'm just starting to (trying to) sew my own clothing. as a big girl, knits are forgiving, but i need some more instruction on how to do it properly. i really liked the first sew u book (despite the fact that the patterns included do not come in big sizes) and would like to add this one to my collection

Posted by: Marcia on June 9, 2008 at 1:53 PM

I need this book because...

Even though I've sewn myself some clothing, I still don't know what the heck I'm doing half the time. Plus, there are piles of old clothes and some other knit fabrics in my closet that need some serious attention! I just need to know what to do with them.

Also, as I'm just starting college this fall, all of the fees and payments have left me with barely nothing to spend. I would love to have SEW U Home Stretch, a book I've wanted terribly since I heard of it, let alone new store-bought clothes!

Posted by: Mary Beth Klatt on June 9, 2008 at 1:51 PM

Sew U Home Stretch

Hello! I love this site. I check it constantly for new craft ideas. Well... I just rececntly finished an activewear class at a local city trade school. The instructor was/is passionate about her craft as a patternmaker. Her teaching was geared towards industry hopefuls and/or students with some industry experience. Long story short, a lot of her instruction was way too advanced. I thouroughly enjoyed the class and am proud of the three knit garments I made for myself from drafting patterns. And let me tell you it wasn't a walk in the park. I am a very curvy gal: 46 bust, 40 waist and drum roll, 50 at the hip. I love making clothes for myself. And I enjoy working with knits becasue you don't have to be a great seamstress to get good results. This book would be helpful in that the key word in describing the patterns is: SIMPLE! I had to have a lot of corrections made to my drafts in class to accommodate my ass-ets :) At my skill level, there is no way I could make those adjustments on my own. I need something to keep me motivated, encouraged and most importantly...sewing. Thank you.

Posted by: rebecca on June 9, 2008 at 1:29 PM

i am pregnant. my clothes are quickly not fitting, and patterns for pregnant women are ugly or non-existent. so hopefully Wendy's patterns/instructions will take my "condition" into account and i can whip up fabulous new clothes to fit my ever-expanding body.

I'm a tall chick who has trouble finding knit tops or pants that fit - sleeves/pants are too short! I look like I'm waiting for a flood, or maybe like Alice in Wonderland if her clothes didn't grow with her. As a grad student, I can't afford the tall girl shops, so a book that helps me make my own clothes would rock!!

I've always loved the simplicity of Built By Wendy, and for a beginner like me, it's just what I need in my sewing life! As someone who always alters her clothes to get the right fit, I've wanted to start making my own. The variety of this book looks to be perfect for just that!

poor n00b!

i'm just starting to sew and i'd love to have this book to help me out!

I need this book!

I've been sewing garments for years, but have never successfully made a garment out of jersey fabric (despite many tries). I could definitely use this book!

Posted by: Clare on June 9, 2008 at 12:44 PM

I need this book because I've been looking everywhere for the perfect little summer dress and I can't find it! I need to be able to make it myself!

Please help me overcome my addiction....

Hi....my name is CW and I'm a crochet-a-holic. This book would help me to overcome my addiction to crochet by diverting my attention to something I've wanted to do for so long...SEW! One addiction for another? Perhaps....I would appreciate the opportunity to find out!! :)

I'd love to have this book

It's my birthday on Friday *wink, wink*

Feeling Lucky!

I could sew use this book (pun intended) to use up the mounds and mounds of knits that I have in my stash but am afraid to cut into! Please pick me!

Wow!

I am a total sewing n00b and need all the help I can get! :)

Great book!

I love her previous book. I refer to it all the time. It's probably my best sewing book. So I'm pretty sure this one is just as good as the first one. Also, I always thought sewing knits was a pain, I'm sure Wendy can make me change my mind!

Posted by: Ashley on June 9, 2008 at 12:29 PM

the perfect book for me

I like to experiment with sewing my own clothes, but my experiments with knitwear have all failed horribly. I bought a dress form at an antique store recently and now I just need the guidance of this book to get me started.

I NEED This Book!

I am so glad for this contest. I carried this book around for about an hour @ Barnes and Noble last week, but in the end - it wasn't in the budget. If I WON a copy though... I'd be thrilled and I might even learn to use my coverstitch machine!

I neeeeed it :)

I have the biggest fear of knits right now, but I really really really want to get over it and make something fabulous! I have the first book and adore it! Her instructions make sewing so approachable.

I'm returning to sewing and trying to relearn everything I knew in sewing classes... yay for new books to try out!

Home Stretch

I would love to own this book because I've been wanting to venture into more clothing sewing and from reviews I've read that this is a good place to start.

Plus I think it would be so much fun to experiment with recycling thrift knit finds into t shirt, skits and other nifty tops. There are LOTs of cool fabrics out there that I'd just love to use if I only knew how.

I Need a New Hoodie!

Oooooh--pick me, pick me! I need this book because I've been searching for an easy, cute hoodie so I can use the super cute Japanese-inspired knits I bought from my favorite local craft store. Also, my clothing sewing skills could really use some improvement.

Want!

So far I've only tried my luck with bags. Now I'm thinking of venturing into clothes for myself and my sister. This book would help immensely.

I need this book! My mom taught me to sew when I was young, but I gave up on it. In the past year or so, I've caught the sewing bug again and LOVE the idea of books that teach you how to create various items instead of buying a single pattern and struggling with it.

Posted by: Linshuang on June 9, 2008 at 12:22 PM

I own Wendy's other book and it has been helpful for me as I am just learning to sew. I really want to learn how to sew with knits, because I love wearing knits. They are so easy to take care of. I hate ironing....

Posted by: Meghan on June 9, 2008 at 12:22 PM

I need this book because I'm new to sewing and want to try sewing with knits, and I've heard this book is just the best for that, with all sorts of helpful tips and lovely patterns!

I sure could use this fantastic book

I am mainly a crocheter. But I have been dying to sew for a long time now. So as a wedding gift to me, my amazing friends all came together and pitched in to buy me a sewing machine!!! That was in October 2007. And I have hardly touched the machine mostly because I am so afraid of it. I have hemmed a few things here and there, but I really want to try out a pattern, to see what I am capable of, and what this machine can do. But the truth is I feel completely lost when I go to fabric stores to look for patterns. I really don't like what I see. And let's face it, if I don't love what I am working on, it probably won't look good no matter what. But I love the patterns here! So great and so me! I would totally have a blast. So you see, if I get this wonderful gift, then you will be helping me overcome my fears, making a dream come true, and putting the biggest smile on a struggling students face!

Thanks for this amazing opportunity!

Need the Book

I'd love to have this book. I haven't sewn in a while, but I've dusted off my machine and could use the inspiration.

Posted by: Camille Turcotte on June 9, 2008 at 12:19 PM

Need it!

I would loved to get this book cause I'm a beginner sewer and I (almost) only wear knits!

Posted by: chrissy on June 9, 2008 at 12:18 PM

Must have!

I need this book because in order to liberate myself from a capitalist society, learning how to make my own clothing is essential.

Also, I'm getting tired of sewing tote bags.

Sew-U Giveaway

I need this book to break me out of my fear of knits! I have a beautiful bamboo cotton knit that I am scared to cut into. Please help!

I need this book

because I'm trying to pluck up courage to learn to sew so that I can help my 8 year old daughter learn too :)

Sew-U Book, More projects please

I would love to be one of the lucky winners of this book. I picked it up a few times, at Powell’s books in Portland, but haven’t bought it yet (promising myself I’ll finish a few projects I have started at home first). A friend and I have talked about the great patterns included so if I win, I promise to share!

Posted by: Lia on June 9, 2008 at 12:15 PM

I need this book because I'm learning to sew clothes...but knits are the only things I ever want to wear, and I have no idea how to sew with them! I'd love to be able to sew something I would actually want to *wear*.

Posted by: Rebecca F on June 9, 2008 at 12:14 PM

I need this book!

I'm just learning to sew, and have the first Sew-U book, and I'm a knitter!

I need to learn how to bring my game up, and this book will teach me! Pretty please? :)

sew-u book

I need this book because I LOVE her first Sew-U book and have just discovered how much I love cotton jersey!

Posted by: Shawna on June 9, 2008 at 12:11 PM

I've just started returning to sewing after being away for awhile. Me and my sewing machine would love some patterns to kick things off.
