Thomas Doyle's Miniatures
Gareth @ MAKE writes:
Artist Thomas Doyle makes fascinating art, tells compelling stories, with model train miniatures and scenery. I've always been strangely attracted to these miniature components and wondered why more people don't make art, jewelry, dioramas, etc. with them.

I make all my own jewelry, particularly earrings. When I worked at a Children's Hospital, I always tried to have a little whimsey on me, and found that a wonderful source of items for unusual earrings was doll house supplies. I have used things like their hanging or landscaping plants and vases of flowers and such even before I created my own. They have sets of, for instance, magazines, books, and other media and even modern technology, as well as labeled cans and boxes and food containers to stock the pantry, copper saucepans, kitchen scales and small appliances, and silver cutlery, etc. - just pick a room, and it will be full of inspiration (a bathroom scale?). I had a pair of toy trains (that's toy scale for a doll house, about 3/4" long per car) that went up to one ear and down from the other (seeming to go through), and even a set of picture frames that had interchangeable paintings cut from Art Museum postcards, so they were always different and could match my mood and each other, or tell a story, or . . . Well, you get it - just use your imagination and have fun!

people don't make as much art with them because they're expensive!
