Craft Holiday Gift Guide - Gifts You Can Make

Holidaygiftguide2007
When I am looking for cool projects to post on Craft, I am always happy to find so many people sharing patterns and instruction sets freely on the web. This year, I am going to try to make as many gifts as I can and I am going to use all these sites as references. Luckily, I don't have too many people to make gifts for. Here are some of my favorite gift ideas with available instruction sets on the web.

Twisted Drop Stitch Scarf
Materials: around 300 yds of bulky weight yarn
Make it: Kis Knit blog Link

Scarves are easy knitting projects that everyone can appreciate. Sometimes it is nice to pick a pattern with a drop stitch because it helps make the scarf knit up faster. Kis Knit's pattern for a twisted drop stitch scarf is an interesting twisted take on the drop stitch scarf.

Materials: t-shirt, fabric paint, roller, double-sided tape

Craft Learn to Screen-Print Your Own T-Shirts - Link

I made this t-shirt from a photo of my friend Sameer following different instruction sets that I found on the web. A t-shirt with a personalized stencil is one of the most fun gifts that you can make for a friend. Check out the links for lots of instructions about screen printing and making stencils. I made this t-shirt by following these basic steps:
Step 1: Create the stencil. I created this stencil by vectorizing an image and printing it out on a laser cutter. You can create your stencil the old fashioned way; by cutting out an image from a manila folder. Add double sided tape before cutting it out.
Step 2: Put some cardboard inside your t-shirt so that the paint does not bleed through. Affix the stencil to the shirt with the double sided tape.
Step 3: Add fabric paint to the shirt with a roller. Remove the stencil before the paint dries.
Step 4: After the fabric paint has dried, iron the image to set the paint.

Materials: around 600 yds of worsted weight yarn
Make it: Kate pattern on Knitty Link

Jess Hutchison designs some really cute knitted toys including the robots that were featured on the cover of Craft Volume 1. Jess writes that Kate knits up fast and is a perfect last minute holiday gift. I have wanted someone to make me Kate since I first saw her so I think she is worth a little quick knitting.

Merino Striped Cabled Gauntlets
Materials: around 230 yds of bulky weight yarn
Make it: Gauntlet pattern on Crystal Palace Link
Cathy Campbell's gauntlet pattern look great with a cable. Gauntlets are the perfect gift for the working girl with the cold hands in your life.

Bitty Booties
Materials: 6"h x 15"w thick pliable material, two small scraps of leather or ultrasuede, decorative thread and scraps for embellishment, thread
Make it: CRAFT Pattern Podcast - Bitty Booties by Heather Bailey - Link

These booties, designed by Heather Bailey, are just the thing for the very small person in your life. They might not appreciate the booties just yet, but that doesn't mean they don't deserve a little special bootie action.
