"Gingerboard" House

My friends Billie and Tootie (who own the green-themed art and design store Reform School here in L.A.) blew my mind today when they gave me a Christmas present wrapped up in the most amazing way--in a handmade house they created from recycled cardboard! I love all the little details, such as the scalloped kraft paper shingles and the sheet music peeking through the doorway and windows. This is such an inspiring project and I definitely plan on keeping this box on display in my studio year-round! More pix in the CRAFT Flickr pool. Link.

(Manly) Cable Scarf

If you are looking for a really last minute gift idea, check out the Manly Cable Scarf posted by Sarah Morgan. The knitting pictured is the scarf I started knitting last night. I really like the simplicity of the pattern and that cool edge stitch. My only complaint is that I think this scarf pattern is great for both men and women. Link.

aFaust points us to Michelle Kaufmann's project to make your own gingerLotus on Instructables.
Michelle writes:
Aside from being a fun and delicious holiday activity, we think this project is an excellent way to start acquainting children with the ideas of sustainability and green living. It's never too early to begin teaching your kids to be concerned for our environment and training them how to respect and protect it through everyday actions.See the project how-to here on Instructables. - Link.

Custom Teeshirt
From the MAKE Weekend Project archives comes a D.I.Y. Teeshirt Design tutorial. Here's Bre's awesome Bunny Vader shirt--you too can create a one-of-a-kind design by using simple household items like masking tape and bleach. Get more info and an instructional PDF file here: Link.
Candy Tree
If the guy in your life has a sweet tooth, why not whip up one of these festive and easy trees made from mini-candy bars? The Crafty Chica shows you how with her Snickers Tree tutorial. Link.
Bespoke Necktie
Last but not least--SamHober.com explains in step-by-step detail how to sew your very own custom bespoke necktie. You could easily dissect an old thrift store tie to use as a pattern template and make a few in varying fabrics. Embellishing them would be fun too, and adds a great personal touch. Link.

Make DIY Ornaments - Weekend Projects Podcast
Make these two DIY ornaments to make your tree the envy of all! The first project is a simple tensegrity project. My dad taught me about this as a kid and I was reminded and inspired by Michael at Maker Faire Austin. The second project is a small icosohedron which is a 20 sided geometric shape. I've made these before out of paper plates for picnic geometry, but this is a really great way of recycling magazines into ornaments! Also, if you are younger and have adults wandering around your house with nothing to do, get them making ornaments and feeling productive!
