I met Judy Coates Perez, an amazing quilt artist at BlogHer in Chicago. While at lunch at the Arts & Crafts table, she told me about this paper exhibit called "It's All In the Fold: More Than Just Origami" that was opening that night at Columbia College Chicago, Center for Book and Paper Arts. Her 13 year old son, Ty created his own insect origami for the exhibit. Not only was Ty recently interviewed by NPR, I got a chance to talk to this creative teen to find out more about his process.

Ty writes:

When choosing an origami model to fold, I first think about how nice the design looks, then how challenging it is. I personally like more complex models of mythical creatures or insects. Next, I think about paper. What kind of paper has the structural integrity to hold up to the particular crease pattern of the model and will it look good? Then I look in my supply to see what colors I have that will work.

The last thing is the size of paper I need to cut. That can be anywhere from three to twenty inches depending on the papers weight and the complexity of the design.

"It's All In the Fold: More Than Just Origami" exhibit runs through August 25th at the Columbia College Gallery (1104 S. Wabash Ave, 2nd floor, Chicago. 312-344-6630). Website - Link.
