CRAFT Magazine's Carla Sinclair and Goli Mohammadi were in LA for two big crafting events: Tinlark Gallery's Modern Fables and Felt Club XL Summer. Throughout the weekend, Carla and Goli were busy meeting crafters, doing workshops (paper beads at Tinlark and Gocco demos at Felt Club), and braving the scorching heat. Carla gives us a great wrap-up of last weekend's activities. She writes:
What a fabulous craft-crazed weekend we had. On Saturday we went to the Tinlark Gallery, at the Crossroads of the World landmark in Hollywood, where we were surrounded by crafty girls and boys who made paper beads with us. Most of the kids hung out at our craft tables for what seemed like hours, and parents were just as involved with the projects as their kids were.
Here's an example of a paper bead bracelet (one that I made). Some of the kids crafted beyond the beaded boundaries, making art and even toys with the jewelry string, paper cups, and even rocks found under nearby trees.
Then on Sunday we went to the Felt Club, LA's hippest (bi-annual) craft fair, and an hour before it started there was already a block-long line forming (which tripled within the hour). With over 3,000 people in not too big of a space, it was jam-packed. The energy was high, the way it feels right before a great concert is about to begin. As soon as the doors opened our CRAFT table was flooded.
Goli gave a fun Gocco printing demo, and we met lots of interesting crafters from all over (including a crafter who works at the Peet's near me). Goli and I gave each other 10 minutes each to power-shop, and in that amount of time I bought a cute black-and-white wrap-around skirt from TwoSpace, a sundress made of vintage fabrics for my daughter from Blue Corduroy, a buck-tooth stuffed creature for my other daughter at Planet Tokki, and a colorful resin necklace from Charcoal Designs. With so much going on, I was LOL when I saw Jenny Ryan, Felt Club's producer, who had a million things to do, and a million people to deal with, walking around with a tray of muffins, offering them to the vendors, like a perfect hostess. Felt Club is one of my favorite events of the year. It was great to see so many indie-minded folks in Los Angeles.
