Knitting Machines

Knittingmachines
I loved reading the post by Liz Lopez at Whip Up about her mom's knitting machine (pictured left). I got a chance to see them in action (pictured right) last December while touring RISD with Diana Eng and my colleagues from Hackszine, Brian Sawyer and Brian Jepson. The ones we saw at RISD were the brother models with the punchcut cards. Hopefully we may see a resurgence soon. Read the rest of Liz's post to get some good tips on how to find and take care of your knitting machine, if you are one of those lucky ones who has one! Link.

This is from Cathy Kasdan, I'm helping her post her comment on here.

Hi, I wanted you to know that they actually teach courses using knitting machines at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio (in their fashion school) and that they use Silver Reed knitting machines that are computer aided. Also, Brother stopped making all their machines so if you buy one for yourself start loading up on needles, spongebars, and other spare parts you might require. I bought mine from a woman in England on eBay.

Did you know the knitting machine was invented back in the 1570's and basically still is the same set up?

I'm one of the lucky ones who has 7!
:)
I've got standard punch-cards (like you saw), a manual "bulky" (that you can buy at any Michael's store), and a couple of spiffy ones that can take downloads from my computer (one of them is a Brother, the other a Passap - check those out if you get a chance!)...
Oh, yes. Knitting machines need to make a resurgance - they got as far as they could with 80's technology. Imagine what our technology could to with them today!
Hooray for the knitting machine!
:)
