Fussy-Cutting for Quilting
Fussy-Cutting, and yes I believe it is a technical term, is the technique where you center your fabric's motif in a block so that all the patterns can be cut to have the same motif (such as the flowers above). Janet at Primrose Design has a tutorial on how to make your own viewfinder to get the same results instead of having to buy the clear plastic fussy-cut rulers. Link.

Fashion-Incubator Contest: Redesign the Reusable Shopping Bag
For your eco-minded artists and crafters, Kathleen at Fashion-Incubator has "another dopey contest", but this one is an important one. (Pictured above is a nylon shopping bag from reusablebags.com.)
Kathleen writes:
An article from this morning's New York Times gives me the inspiration for a new design contest, that of recreating the humble reusable grocery bag. I know my contests are dopey and tend toward the functional, perhaps it's in protest to the public's over fascination with all things fashion. Despite the name of this blog, our focus is sewn products since those producers are holding up more than half our sky...These are some great questions and I'm looking forward to checking out the innovative designs in this exploration. Find out more info on how to enter the redesign contest here. Link.Durability concerns aside, how important is styling and color? How important is price? How many bags does the average consumer use on their heaviest shopping day? I've been counting our usage over the past couple of weeks since I'm wondering how many we'd need to buy. How important are additional features such as inside pockets? How about inside labels where consumers could note their contact information in the event the bags are lost?

Knitting: Long Tail Cast On (video)
Knit like a Man's David Demchuk has a great video on how to do the long tail cast on for knitting. I cast on using this method but I always find it hard to explain to people who are starting to knit. This video is great and you can pause it when you need to practice along. David is also a columnist on Knitty and you can read here his current article for Spring. Link.
