UpCrafted Plastic Bag Rain Boots

The only thing that Betz White's Toadstool Rain Bucket Hat are missing is a pair of these clever recycled plastic bag rain boots. Louie Rigano of the RISD Waste for Life studio designed these as a sustainable product that could be made by cartoneros, impoverished folks living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, who make a living collecting plastic bags. Rigano has instructions and a template posted on his site. The trick in the boots is to fuse an additional fibrous material in between the plastic layers. Refer to the Betz White tutorial for detailed instructions on fusing plastic bags. (via ecouterre)

This Week In Craft Fairs
Hppy St Ptrck's Dy! I hope you're wearing green! I actually made it out to my car this morning in an outfit devoid of any green, and then the little girl down the street ran up to talk to me, and I realized what day it was. She was all decked out in various shades of green from head to toe, topped off with a cute little green crocheted poncho. D'oh! I'm using a green pen today.

How-To: Plying Yarn

By Jamie Marie Chan
After I watched Becky Stern's Ask Craft video about plying yarns, I was inspired to try plying some of my scrap commercial yarns together. Plying is simply twisting two or more single threads together, traditionally in the opposite direction from which they were spun. Plying puts more strength into a yarn, balances irregular singles, and in this case makes an interesting novelty yarn. I'll show you how you can use up the yarn you have in your stash, to create your own plied yarn.

Recycled Phone Book Pen Organizer

I never pick up the phone books when they are distributed around my building anymore but if I had one, I would love to make this recycled phone book pen organizer by Chica and Jo. Wouldn't it be fun to just cut apart a big o' phone book? [via Twitter SisterDiane]

Carmel Cupcakes

Today I'm heading out for an early afternoon crafty session with some friends, and I'm bringing cupcakes! I made cupcakes using Martha Stewart's Perfect White Cake recipe, which is my favorite of all time. But I have to say, I took the plain cake to the next level with the best frosting ever- caramelized condensed milk. It's the most simple process ever. Make it by setting one can of sweetened condensed milk in a soup pot, cover it with water, and then boil it whole for at 2 to 3 hours. The boiling process literally cooks that sugary milk into a dark brown and amazingly complex gooey caramel. The longer you cook the can, the darker and thicker the milk will become. Let the can thoroughly cool, and then open it carefully and spread the deliciousness onto your cakes. I topped mine with a raw pecan. ZOMG.

How-To: Vintage Embroidery Applique Tank Top

I've seen several projects that use applique of vintage embroidered linens, and I never tire of them. Vintage embroidered linens are beautiful and charming, but let's face it: we don't need dozens and dozens of towels or tablecloths. Repurposing these vintage embroidered linens as updates to your wardrobe is a great way to preserve their beauty and boost their practical application. This project from Kristen Sutcliffe of New House Project for Book Hour Crafts shows how you can turn a vintage embroidered linen into an easy-to-applique adornment for a sweet toddler tank top.

Molecules on Canvas

Alexander Kobulnicky paints molecules. His large portfolio of acrylic paintings focuses mainly on substances that interact with the human body: caffeine, dopamine, psilocybin, even ritalin, but so far I think my favorite is chlorophyll (pictured above).
